Finally got around to seeing Zombieland. Entertaining and one funny a** movie! I didn't think it would be my type of movie, but it was better than I had expected.

If you're even slightly into rock guitar or rock music, the documentary "It Might Get Loud" is a fascinating, compelling way to spend 97 minutes. Finally saw it this week on vacation. Phenomenal, the common threads and interplay among three very different guitar players -- Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White.

That doc ruled. Enjoyed it waaay more than I thought I would. The scene where Page puts on that Link Wray record & just sits back & "digs" it was awesome.pk500 wrote:If you're even slightly into rock guitar or rock music, the documentary "It Might Get Loud" is a fascinating, compelling way to spend 97 minutes. An older movie but a great film i think is" Layer Cake" Was checking out the sound options on my PS3 the other day with it and ended up watching the whole movie again, love it.
Its in the same vein as Lock stock, Snatch and Rocknrolla but not as gritty. Daniel Craig is good and one of the sexiest blondes youll see in a while has a few scenes.

Yep. Great scene. And as a U2 fan, it was really cool to see and hear The Edge rummage through and play his album early demo tapes.greggsand wrote:That doc ruled. But the best scene in the movie for me came when Page started playing the opening riff of "Whole Lotta Love" in the soundstage. The reverence from The Edge and Jack White was palpable. The Edge stood up to look at Page play more closely, and Jack White cracked one of his few smiles of the entire movie.
Fantastic.

While not the best film around, I watched Le Mans for the first time in awhile. Certainly not to the same level as Grand Prix (which was supposed to have McQueen in it but that fell through and James Garner got the role), but still a fantastic movie for the cars. The truly remarkable thing is that this movie would not be made today - I counted 36 minutes into the film before McQueen even spoke a word. He a real talent at acting through his emotions only.

Oh yeah, Jack had a "I can't believe I'm watching this" giddy-look. Totally genuine.pk500 wrote:Yep. Great scene. Fantastic.
I'm not sure how to word it, but they had this unaware attitude with their guitar playing. Like "I don't know, I just grabbed my guitar and played it like this [insert kick ass guitar riff here]'. Unlike someone like Pete Townshend or Roger MacGuinn, who likes touts their brilliance (granted they are, but still).

Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
Definitely caught that vibe with Page. When Guggenheim asked him about the creative process, he honestly couldn't give a blueprint. He wasn't being pretentious; it actually seemed that he just rolled with his bursts of creative genius and went from there.greggsand wrote:I'm not sure how to word it, but they had this unaware attitude with their guitar playing. On the contrary, Jack White made his genius seem like sheer sweat, but without a whiff of pretense. The way he always talked about the creative process being a battle with one's self, the shots of blood on his pick guard and pickups, the scenes of him scrawling lyrics on a legal pad and then hammering out blues chords with a reel-to-reel tape deck in the background. Really interesting.
What also was revealing to me was just how much The Edge creates with effects. I always knew he loved them right from the "Boy" album, as his guitar sound is drenched with digital delay on that record. But I don't think the guy cuts a guitar track without an effect.
Still, anyone who says The Edge's brilliance is sullied due to the reliance on effects completely misses the point. It's one thing to have effects; it's another thing to use them deftly. The Edge really bridges the gap between guitar-driven rock and electronic music production -- two of my three favorite forms of music -- with his use of effects. Like a great progressive house or house producer, he knows just what knobs to turn and pedals to press at just the right time.
Oh, there are so many layers of this great film to discuss. I could clutter this thread for another page or two!

Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
This should prob go the music thread, but yeah, the edge just works on a different level. Even he jokes about how he's "just playing one note", but there's waay more going on than that. There's a making of the joshua tree doc out there where the edge worked for weeks on the intro to 'streets have no name' & the rest of the band was 'neeto'. Bono said at the time they had no idea the amount of days/weeks that took to come u with it. Most guitarist get bogged down with delays/echo etc to the point of zero being created at the end of the day (i know first hand). They you have Jack white who has a $99 guitar & a mic and just rips it. what makes the guitar so wild.
Larry Crane (famous engineer) has a line where bands come in his studio & say "I want this guitar to sound like jack white", and crane always says 'then u better get him over here asap' cuz only jack white sounds like jack white...

Being a huge Zep fan, I have to see this. Is it in theaters or rentals?pk500 wrote:If you're even slightly into rock guitar or rock music, the documentary "It Might Get Loud" is a fascinating, compelling way to spend 97 minutes. Got to see Inception this past weekend. Liked "Shutter Island" much more. I thought Inception was pretty entertaining, but it got too crazy for me at times and this made me not care about what was happening. Lots of times, you couldn't tell who was fighting who or the onscreen action was just too overwhelming for my simple mindGTHobbes wrote:I pretty much felt the same way about Inception (and Shutter Island, for that matter, two movies I was really looking forward to seeing). My girlfriend and I got stuck in the front row in the IMax theatre we went to see it at, so that could have something to do with it, but she wanted to leave 3/4 of the way through and I didn't put up an argument. Personally, I didn't even really care to see how it ended.sportdan30 wrote:Well, count me as one who wasn't overly enchanted with "Inception". I thought the premise and the acting was well done, but the story itself seemed rather shallow. The latter part of that statement will probably raise eyebrows. The main story line lacked depth in my opinion. I would have much rather seen how these dream sequences originated. The back story involving Dicaprio's character was far more interesting than the plot. The movie left me flat.

Rentals. It's long out of theaters, where it had limited distribution.JackB1 wrote:Being a huge Zep fan, I have to see this. If your wife is into guitar-based rock music, yes. Otherwise, no.
This is a film for anyone who either plays guitar or loves guitar-based rock.

I second PK, it's a pretty guitar/rock-geek kind of movie. There's some great scenes anyone would dig, but overall, it's helps to be into the whole guitar thing.

Watched "Shutter Island" this past weekend. Another excellent performance by Leonardo Dicaprio. The movie was a little slow, but the story was pretty riveting.

Yep..he was very good. I thought the story was a little weak at that certain spot but thumbs up and I certainly cant argue with the job Leo did.
This movie and Inception have now totally washed the odor of Titanic from my memory

Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
Finally saw "Pirate Radio." Loved it! Too few movies set their sites this low anymore, and I mean that as a compliment. It's only an inch deep, but it's a big wide smile of a movie. Great over-the-top performances and the music is obviously excellent.
It reminds me of a movie from the 70's or 80's, the days before every comedy had to be a comedy-something. It's just a good 3 minute pop song of a flick.

Only tangential to the thread, but GQ has a great feature on the 20th anniversary of Goodfellas.

Finally got around to watching The Town. Very good movie, albeit it was fairly obvious where the movie was heading. Great acting all around.
Planning on watching the Social Network this evening.

Enjoyed The Town quite a bit better than Social Network. I thought Social Network was good, but not earth shattering great. I don't really understand all the acclaim it's gotten. To me, it was more of an interest movie than an entertaining one. My wife fell asleep 10 minutes in to the movie. Good cast and very good acting, but not a movie I'd be interested in seeing a second time.

Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
No disrespect to your wife falling asleep, but I thought the movie was pretty great & worth watching. I think 127 hours was film of the year, but social network is cool. It doesn't have a typical story arch, & could have been 3 hours long. The glimpse into how a billion $$ business can come from dorm rooms & dirty rental houses is the bread & butter of it. Fincher was a good director for it. Lesser directors would have turned it into a big a "rah rah" victory film. I appreciated the subtly of it.sportdan30 wrote:Enjoyed The Town quite a bit better than Social Network. I thought Social Network was good, but not earth shattering great.
