PS3 Impressions Yes Another One....

This update kicks ass. It recognized my PC and WMP right away and I can stream all my MP3's/WMA's, videos and pics from my PC to my PS3 via a wireless internet connection. Evidently you can now access anything on your PS3 from your PSP ANYWHERE there is an internet connection. So if I am at an airport with my PSP I can access my MP3's, videos, etc. on my PS3 thru the airport's internet connection.10spro wrote:I am downloading the update, and I look forward to the upscaling of DVD's. This new update allows DLNA3 enabled device to stream media content to the PS3. My question is, what is a DLNA3 enabled device? Wonder if the PS2 games will look that much better...

By coincidence, I picked up a LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini (NAS)for around $200. It has 500 GB capacity.
It also has DLNA but I'm not sure about DLNA3.
Supposedly if I turned it on, with iTunes copied onto it, that will appear as a shared library on other iTunes clients. I haven't done that yet but am trying to host my media on the NAS because I'm running out of room on old laptops.
Now, if it can read AAC format as well as MP3...

With the latest firmware update, I was trying to stream some music and photos into the PS3. The PS3 would only read my computers' folders but the actual pictures never showed. Any ideas?
Also tried Pro Evolution 07 with the latest upscale feature and with the exceptions of the game replays, the graphics are much sharper IMO. The gameplay of course is intact which makes it sports game of the year for me, but for some reason networking keeps getting an error. When you play an online game with a PS2 game, you will have to reconfigure your network configurations as it wasn't automatic as with the PS3 games. The network test was succesful, yet I keep getting an error with WE.

10spro, I've been playing with the 1.8 firmware.
I have an NAS which has DLNA capability. That is what the PS3 looks for.
Well my NAS doesn't really support my iTunes and iPhoto libraries that well. It works but I have to navigate to specific folders. For instance, iPhoto stores low-res thumbnails of all the pics so when I went there by mistake, the pics were blurry and only 360x202. Then finding the directory with the full rez pics (they are 8 MP), they showed up nice on my HDTV, which of course only does 1080i (1080p would only be about 2 MP).
Even downscaled, they look pretty good. Beats looking at them on a smaller screen of my PowerBook.
But my NAS will only serve up iTunes or iPhoto libraries but not both at the same time. I think it's a limited DLNA implementation which can't recurse all the directories of media at once.
So I searched around and found a trial software called EyeConnect for the Mac and that will do the job much better, such as grouping your pics by the albums (actually smart albums) I've set up in iPhoto. But I haven't seen it do any iTunes playlists, unless I missed it.
One other main difference, the LaCie NAS shows up with a lot of "unsupported data" for the AAC format files (from CD rips, I have very little purchased iTunes tracks). But these same files, through EyeConnect, shows up as .m4a files but are apparently converted to PCM by the EyeConnect software on the fly.
Maybe now that the PS3 has all this media streaming capabilities, there will be more software which is able to let the PS3 read AAC and H.264 formats, which it's suppose to already support.
On the Windows side, I've heard people discussing using Nero and something called TVersity to stream media to the PS3.
Never had a big interest in AppleTV but it probably works a lot better with the ability to access iTunes playlists directly. Maybe when they come out with the 1080p version.

Are you using Windows Media Connect on your PC? This is a PC right? Anyway I was having the same issue, Media Connect allowed access for my PS3, but it didn't give it access to any folders. I had to go in an select each folder in media connect and then allow access for the PS3.10spro wrote:WCO thanks for your response. I have no clue what DLNA is and are you saying that I would need an additional software in order to see my photos and music coordinate to my PS3. As I was saying, it reads the computers' folders but once I get there, the pictures don't show.
For whatever reason playing video is choppy as hell, could be my wireless connection.

Same for me. The PS3 sees my folders, sees the artists, but when I click on the artist folder, it says no files found. Most of my music is in mp3 format and obviously my pictures are in .jpg format.10spro wrote:With the latest firmware update, I was trying to stream some music and photos into the PS3. If anyone hears of a solution for this, please post it here.
Yes, it is a very nice piece of electronics. I've had mine since November and haven't had it freeze up or do anything other than what it was intended to do. The guys over at the AVS forums are now proclaiming the PS3 to be THE BEST blu ray and all around dvd player on the market. The latest firmware update hit the sweet spot in terms of flexibility and playback. A lot of these guys are buying a PS3 and have no interest in playing games on it whatsoever.Leebo33 wrote:I pickup up a PS3 today with The Show and F1 (love them both). The first two Pirates of the Caribbean movies came out last week on blu ray and they look and sound phenomenal. Also, if you have kids, be sure and pick up Ice Age 2...it is my personal favorite to show off how good a dvd can look.
Windows media it is. I can get access only to the folders, I see them on the screen of my PS3 but that's about it. No pics or music showing under those folders.Danimal wrote:Are you using Windows Media Connect on your PC? This is a PC right? Very cool Leebo, I'm glad you are having fun with it. I can't stop playing The Show but how is the F1 game? I've heard alot of negative things about it so I've never bothered to try it out.Leebo33 wrote:I pickup up a PS3 today with The Show and F1 (love them both). What an awesome piece of electronics. btm, I *really* like the F1 game. Where did you hear bad things? I did read the career mode can be too hard, but I've been having a lot of fun just going through a season so far. I would read the user comments at amazon (4 1/2 stars) and gamestop. They will give you a real good feel for the pros/cons. I really love the sense of speed and also the fact that I can tweak it to my liking (I generally like sim racers but suck at them so having some of the aids on but damage is great for me). BTW, I picked it up at Gamestop used for $49.99 in pristine condition (I usually don't buy games there but they gave me an extra $20 towards the trade in of an SP that I had sitting around).
The Show is absolutely in a class by itself.

When the game was first released I remember hearing how the driving model was tight and that the controls were bad. Its one of those games that I've always meant to try but always seem to forget about. I'm dumping my Motorstorm so I'll probably pick up F1 to replace it.Leebo33 wrote:btm, I *really* like the F1 game. Where did you hear bad things? Thats funny about Gamestop as I just swore off buying used games there (I do my very best to stay out of EB/Gamestop when at all possible). I picked up one of the older Ratchet and Clank games on Friday and when I opened it at home it looked like it was used as a knife sharpener. Maybe I'll take a look there and make them show me the game first as I also get the 10% off used games with their dopey card.
And yes, The Show is just awesome. I hate to say that looking forward to playing one game influenced my purchase of a PS3 a few months back, but.....................

I'm getting the same thing using Windows Media Player 11. I'd like a solution too.10spro wrote:Windows media it is. I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.
