XBox One AND PS4 Discussion

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House closed out the Playstation 4 presentation with the following line:

Concepts like true consumer ownership and consumer trust are central to everything we do.

These words sum up how Sony cashed in on Microsoft’s ungainly fumbling as they tried to finesse various announcements about policies hostile to consumers. The words are a carefully crafted emollient that could only be made by listening to consumers, by being nimble enough to react, and by making specific and difficult decisions about whether Sony’s priorities are with consumers or with publishers. They chose consumers. By singling out the contributions of independent developerrs, by focusing on games over shoehorned transmedia and unnecessary proprietary interfaces, and most importantly by continuing the status quo on used games and DRM — two issues that go hand-in-hand — Sony has effectively won E3 before the doors of the show floor even opened.

The $100 cheaper price point is just gravy.

So sports gaming wise, what are developers like EA saying if anything yet? What system is the better on to develop for? Which system will the game be developed for and which system will it be ported over to? That'll be a big selling point for me. EA's history has shown the last 2 gens that the ported over system gameplay suffers.

If you notice there was no EA games at the Sony presser and a lot of exclusive announcements on the XB1 presser. EA got rid of their online pass because MS covered their ass. Who do you think they are going to side with?

Having said that I didn't see one person say they pre-ordered a XB1 and my twitter feed is blown up with I just pre-order a PS4 so EA has no choice but to go to the system that sells.

Hmmm. I've loved the hell out of the 360. The $100 price difference doesn't really matter to me considering I'll use the rig for for years (for example if the ps3 was $99 vs a $300 360, I'd argue the 360 was a better a buy over the course of 7+ years). The used game thing is concerning, but the bad PR it's generating will be interesting to watch play out. I've already pre-order the '1', but if all my xbl friends decided to jump ship, I'd prob roll with them.

I realize I'm in the minority but I pre-ordered an Xbox One and am not pre-ordering a PS4. My main reasons:

* Me and my family love our Kinect games
* The new Kinect will work even better for us with a wider camera range and better voice recognition (especially for my short, high pitch voiced 8 year old daughter)
* Forza 5
* I have a PS3 and Vita and hardly ever use them, don't know why but the games haven't appealed to me and I struggle with the controls for both
* And as far as Sony's dig at Microsoft and online activation, used games, etc - I buy a lot of games digitally (I hate swapping discs/cards) and my PS3 and Vita games won't play if I haven't connected online recently (gee Sony, hypocritical much?)
* I don't have a problem with similar restrictions with my Steam account either - it is the future of game purchasing, physical media will die at some point

I guess Microsoft's plan just doesn't bother me that much

At this point in my console gaming life it is 90+% about Xbox Live. It is what I play. I play with you guys. Best example are the EA games. They are are now pretty much worthless to me without it.

If sony has that experience then that is where I go. If not? Wtf is $100 over 7 years? NOTHING.

Though like with every generation, I will at some point have both. Its what I do.

I have to say the lower price is a huge throw down of the gauntlet. But I think it belies a lack of confidence on Sony's part. If I'm not mistaken, Sony as a corporation is in pretty big trouble, and they have to do anything they can to make the PS4 a success. So they are willing to bite the bullet. And yet, the fact that they have now gone whole hog into the online pay wall is a bit of a backslide, and even if the cost of online membership is the same, the question still remains whose online service is superior, and Xbox has a miles long head start.

The issue of exclusives is huge. Huge! Everyone knows games sell systems, and without anything like the BluRay advantage Sony had this past gen, it is evermore true this time. MS seems to have aggressively gathered up some of the franchises and developers that used to belong to Sony's world: Metal Gear, Insomniac, while continuing their strategy of buying up any and all developers they can find that EA hasn't already purchased. And as has been mentioned, MS did nothing to lose EA's hard-won loyalty, so there's little reason to believe Madden will run better on the PS4.

MS has upped the ante with their publisher-friendly, consumer-hostile DRM gestures. Developers now have more to consider than simply who will have the biggest installed base, and perhaps that's what we saw reflected in each console's presentation. I am among many here for whom there is great distaste for the direction MS are going, and yet for whom the real impact, if any, would be very small. If they can force it through, publishers would be foolish not to take advantage, and we may see all kinds of Xbox advantages cropping up in terms of early releases, exclusive DLC, and so on, for the non-exclusive games.

But hell, with a $100 difference, it sure looks like the game is on now. Let the fanboys warm up their flamethrowers. I have a sense that MS sees that Sony struggling, and they feel they can take the whole damn pie for themselves. Hubris, maybe. And for their part Sony is ready and willing to do anything to take advantage of MS's overreaching and is probably pandering more than a little bit to those who feel MS is going too far. But in the end maybe Sony will prove to be just as full of s*** as they ever were. We shall see.

No way in hell I'm pre-ordering any system. There is still a ton of time for things to change and I bet some of you cancel your orders before all is said and done.

I need to see what games are going to be exclusive to what system before I even think about next-gen.

If Sony delivers an online experience to rival XBL, I'd pay for it and switch back to Sony. But that's a see it to believe it situation for me. I'm seeing no reason to put any cash on the table at this point, and I'm more than happy to let the media and fanboys jump to conclusions today.

For the first time in years, not since the hey days of the ealy Genesis that I won't be pre-ordering anything anytime soon. I did however pre-ordered these games that I am pretty sure will keep me busy for awhile, until the battle for the next gen settles down. NHL14, FIFA 14, BF4 CoD and GTA V.

Exclusivity is somehow important but at the end of the day is what console will my friends be playing mostly. From what I saw, in terms of cosmetic looks I like the Sony but hate the controller while MS could have distantiated themselves yet have given Sony a chance to catch up with the race.

Watch Dogs is the only game I'm even remotely interested in besides the new sports titles and that's coming out current gen as well.

NHL 14 and NCAA 14 will be seeing serious time on my x360 in the near future though.

I won't be pre-ordering but one plus in doing so is you can probably resell it on ebay for 3x the cost assuming everywhere will be sold out on launch day.

Now leaning towards the PS4. I got both pre-ordered.

Looks like this time PS4 will be my primary gaming and online console. Then maybe get Xbox One after a price drop for single player exclusives. Role reversal.

Can anyone point me to actual gameplay footage from these new consoles? Or more specifically, any gameplay footage that actually looks "next-gen" or better than what I see on the lastest gen of 360 games? I am having trouble finding anything...
