Are the Phillies the NL version of the Yankees?

Why? Martin sucks...Montero will beat him out if he's ready for the big leagues.

not if they trade him first. Cashman needs to be careful, at this time. And not give into NY media and legions of spoiled Yankee fans who will be demanding immediate action.

It'll be interesting to see how he performs after his hip surgery in August. Risky business if you asked me. Bosox looks like the team to beat in the AL.

1 year low-risk signing. And Yankees maintain his arbitration rights for 2012.

The only problem is that he's been terrible for the past three years. Russell Martin is garbage now. He peaked and cratered already.

George Sherrill is garbage too. But both players have a chance to revert back to form. At 1 year, who cares?

And I have never praised the Braves for bringing that guy in. Sherrill at least was serviceable the last few years (minus last years horrible lefty/righty splits). Martin fell off the map completely. Biiiiig difference. Catchers don't just "get it" again...when they lose it they lose it. Pitchers seem to have a better chance of coming back strong with new mechanics or new philosophies. Last I checked, the Braves have a pretty good track record with reclamation projects from a pitching point of view. So yeah, I'll take Sherrill over Martin any day of the week...and I hate him!

Dayton Moore, the most inept GM in baseball, strikes.

Brewers get a hellla pitcher. Good luck to Zach Greinke. Hope you finally receive a form of run support

Greinke is overrated in my opinion. Dayton Moore got a ton for him. He had to go and he got a significant haul for him. You'll see. Zack wins 14 games tops next year. Just average for what the brewers gave up.

I don't know about that. Just the "AL pitchers 1st year in the NL" factor, adds at least 5 wins to his total (plus numerous chances against Pittsburg). Regardless, he could win 14 games & still win the cy young. I wouldn't pencil them in for the world series, but Grienke should really thrive there.

If I were a Royal fan, I'd take fewer guys back if at least one of them had star potential. This trade doesn't really have a huge upside guy going their way.

The Royals are getting 4 of the top 10 guys in the Brewers system. Can't do much better than that.

I didn't realize they could only trade with the Brewers :)

I have no idea what other teams were offering, but I would have thought that once Brett Lawrie got traded to Toronto they would have looked elsewhere.

4 of the top 10 in their system? If you mean minors, Escobar and Cain don't count, as they were part of the ML roster last year and would have been going into 2011.

I hate that they got rid of Cain, and I really liked what he showed at the end of last season. The idea of being limited to Gomez in CF depresses me. Escobar looked lost at the plate and in the field way too much last year. He may turn out to be great, but I didn't see it last year. I'm not real familiar with the pitchers thet gave up, but Jeffers has 2 strikes against him for drug violations, so no big loss there.

I'm glad they are finally addressing the pitching. With Greinke and Marcum in the rotation, they finally have a decent set of arms. Hopefully that will take some of the pressure off the hitters to try and hit bombs every time at bat.

What worries me most about this and the Mrcum deals is what it will do to the team 2 years from now. Fielder will be gone, and I'm sure we'll lose at least one of either Greinke or Marcum. With so many prospects being traded away, I don't what we'll have for a team in 2013. Could be one of those binge/purge examples like the Marlins did a couple of times in the past.

System means entire organization as defined by Keith Law of ESPN. Not sure why you are making a stink about my statement.

Would you feel better if I said 4 out of the top 10 young players or would you argue about the word "young" also?

I asked because 4 of the top 10 doesn't make sense. You've got Fielder, Braun, Hart, Weeks, Axford, Gallardo, McGahee all ahead of the 4 they traded away. That's 7 right there, so there's no way all of the guys they trade away would qualify as top 10 in the organization. Don't get all pissy just because I don't agree with you.

Are Cain and Escobar still considered rookies based on PA? If the answer is no, then Law's assessment is correct. That's my point. You can still be considered a prospect and have servered time in the majors.

There's not much of a downside for the Brewers. The Royals will develop the talent, the good ones float to the top, Royals will be unable to resign any of the good ones, the Brewers sign them back (if they don't go to NY or Bos first). Piece of cake!

I agree. He's the only major leaguer among the 8 players rumored to be in the trade pending physicals. TPA will still be a force with all the draft picks they have.

Jays resign Y. Escobar whom I was pleasantly surprised with for a year avoiding arbitration and add some needed depth in the bullpen adding tall J. Rauch.

Can't argue with what AA has done with the bullpen this off-season.

Downs and Gregg signed with other teams for $25M (about $5M per season each) as AA brought in Dotel and Rauch for approximately $3M each for a year. Great way to come out on top in terms of free agent compensation picks and not having to throw long term money at middle-relievers and mediocre closers.

Escobar has potential to bounce back nicely and become one of the AL's finer shortstops.
