Good news for the United States. We got Jose Francisco Torres, a Mexican-American who plays for Pachuca, to commit to the US Nat'l team, and is on the roster for the qualifier against Cuba. I've seen him play against DC United in the Superliga and in a few Mexican matches. He's tiny, but is a really good passer, dribbler, has good vision, and is left-footed (though he plays in the center of the pitch).
Now if we can get Subotic to commit as well...

Don't think there was any racist taunting, but Portsmouth were actually at home to Tottenham.wco81 wrote:What's the deal with Sol Campbell. He was subject to racist and homophobic taunts at some away match recently?
Campbell started his career at Tottenham, then committed the cardinal sin of playing out his contract then moving to their arch-enemies Arsenal on a free transfer, before eventually moving to Pompey.
Hence this rather unsavoury ditty
This was the chant, sang to the tune of Lord of the Dance:
“Sol, Sol, wherever you may be
You’re on the verge of lunacy
And we don’t give a f*** if you’re hanging from a tree
You Judas c*** with HIV.”
So their main taunt to him was along the lines of him being a Judas, and no tears being shed had he reached the same end. A second part of the taunt relates to his famous mental crack up during an Arsenal game vs West Ham a few years ago, when he had a shocking first half, came off at half-time and literally just went home.
It's been rumoured that he is homosexual, but given the fact that he's built like a brick shitehouse, I can't imagine anyone asking him directly. Hence the last bit.
Like I said, somewhat unpleasant, but related to one of his previous career moves.
"The players come from all over the world, the money from deep underneath the Persian Gulf, but, as another, older City poster campaign put it, this is their city. They may now exist in the global spotlight, but they intend to keep it that way."
This made my day. Primarily because I have absolutely no idea what the melody to Lord of the Dance isdavet010 wrote:

BTW - there's 5 lines in my version (which is correct) as there should be a line break after 'f*ck' in the third line.

Brilliant song....the Sol Campbell version, the original...well I had to sing it in primary school in England.

Newcastle's the only big club in the north-east, and when I say big what I really mean is "big" since only the most ardent or blinkered Magpie (usually the same person fills both of those roles) genuinely believes they're a club with any kind of international standing.pk500 wrote:Plus it's the only big club in Newcastle, so it owns that city. Different from Manchester, Liverpool or Birmingham, for example, which have/recently had two clubs in the Premiership.
As far as the whole north-east hotbed of football thing, I'm sure I've spouted off about that elsewhere on this thread or an earlier incarnation of it, but besides Newcastle, this north-east hotbed also houses Sunderland and Middlesbrough. No further commentary is required, though I should probably remind you that I live in the 'hotbed of football' and so can say from daily first-hand experience that the entire concept is a load of old horse.
Bringing two lines of conversation together, Everton vs Newcastle...that's got to be good for a laugh, hasn't it?

Even if lynching is more of an American thing, a bunch of predominantly white football fans singing to a black guy about him hanging from a tree is going too far.

Bollocks - the hanging by a tree reference is to the eventual fate of Judas, which is how Tottenham fans think of Campbell for his defection to Arsenal, particularly as he spent months denying it.Feanor wrote:"Hanging from a tree" is kind of racist.davet010 wrote:Don't think there was any racist taunting, but Portsmouth were actually at home to Tottenham.wco81 wrote:What's the deal with Sol Campbell. Oh, and given that the negro lynching 'scoreboard' for racial attacks has a verified score of US - 3,437 UK - 1, I'd say that it was almost entirely an 'American thing', thanks very much.

Interesting ManU game against rovers today. I thought Berbatov looked very very lazy out there and had a few instances of "gimme gimme" when he really shouldn't have been looking for a pass. Rooney looked spectacular, he had some amazing runs and could've easily had two goals if only the Blackburn winds hadn't carried his cheeky chip shot over the goal. Ronaldo's crosses looked pretty weak so I'm wondering if he still isn't 100% after his injury. He just couldn't manage to get his usual separation against the defenders.
Arsenal has problems. 1-1 at Sunderland. 0-1 from Hull on a wunderstrike.
Arsenal just needs to stop trying to pass the ball into the back of the net. And I think their defense isn't tough enough.
I didn't see the game so I might be off. I'd be interested in hearing what our UK friends are hearing tonight.
Oh and the following teams could leapfrog Arsenal with a win...
Man U, Hull
, West Ham. Chelski and the Scum could be 4 points up after the weekend.
And we'll it's extremely early, the promoted sides don't seem as bad as they were made out to be. Hull City will fall down to earth but Stoke and WBA haven't been that bad.

If you meant Liverpool, we prefer to be referred to as thieves and the like.

I'm having a hard time rooting for a big team in England this year.
For some reason I hope Newcastle go down. But I just can't seem to get excited about Man U or Chelsea.
I guess, I'll just read the financial times to see how Man City are doing.

Campbell knows that playing the 'it's a racial slur' card is the only way he'll get any sympathy, as the rest of it is all true.Feanor wrote:I'll take Sol & Harry's opinion over yours.davet010 wrote:Bollocks - the hanging by a tree reference is to the eventual fate of Judas, which is how Tottenham fans think of Campbell for his defection to Arsenal, particularly as he spent months denying it.

Redknapp is the most bent manager in the EPL, well known for his participation in illegal payments to both players and agents (named in both of the recent reports into such dealings, and arrested last year for it). I wouldn't take his word over that of George Bush personally, but what you do is up to you.

What a game! I thought the Zabaleta sending off was harsh until I saw the replay....then I was glad Alonso could still walk! And Robinho....well apart from the bunch of handballs - how dangerous is this guy? I was shitting my pants every time he had the ball.
Bad injury to Skrtel but at least we have Agger in reserve and what a great comeback - oh Dirk you ugly bastard!
Only one thing can make this day get any better....c'mon Newcastle!!

EDIT:
Rob, I went to a wedding last night and drank way too much - I still must be feeling the effects because, for a second, I thought I saw us score from a corner! It's pink Elephants next...

Just emphasizes the need for a world class CB, as Dunne looks out of his depth now. Just wish Joe Hart hadn't been channelling the spirit of David James with his flapping at crosses as well.
Oh well, there's always Europe...til the draw comes out.

The sending off was unfortunate, but warranted I think. And it was nice of the Ref to even things up at 10 on 10, seeing as how we had Kuyt out there for the full 90'.

Incidentally, Robinho got his hands on more passes today than half of my fantasy football WR's. LOL
It was a hell of a match, and I'm hard-pressed to say anything bad about City. They got money. The bought exciting players and they attack and play the game right.
