Wow. Best game of the playoffs thus far.
Funny thing is that Pisani was a marginal College hockey player at Providence College and now he is like a god on the ice.

Oh, F*CK YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
What balls. What grit. What a f*cking team, baby! Pardon my hyperbole, but I'm jacked beyond belief. My heart rate must be about 120 beats per minute.
Unbelievable. Hemsky was absolutely HORRIBLE in the first two periods, just as he has been all series. MacT even buried him on the bench for the first 10 minutes of the third, as I think Hemmer had one shift.
Then the mofo goes out and deposits two to win the game and series. And what a pass by Samsonov -- another underachiever for the Oil this series -- to set up the game-winner.
And Pisani? Amazing. He has been the Oilers' best forward this series and was again tonight.
Man, this is f*cking karma, man. Spacek has his worst game as an Oiler. Pronger looked mortal. Peca and Torres didn't show up until the third period. Yet the Oil scores four in the third -- after barely scoring at all in the third during this series -- to win it.
And Sully is right: Chopper's (Moreau) late block with no stick symbolized the heart, grit, desire and hustle of the Oil in this series.
OH, YEAH! Bring on the f*cking Flames!
But I must give MEGA props to Yzerman. It took incredible courage for him to play tonight, and he probably was Detroit's second-best forward tonight behind Zetterberg. If he retires, he can say that he went out giving his all. Pure class. Pure grit.
Still, I stand by my belief that playing in the Central did the Red Wings and the Predators no good. Having a big portion of your schedule comprised of relatively easy games against Columbus, St. Louis and Chicago simply doesn't steel a team like playing against Calgary, Vancouver, Colorado and Minnesota night after night. The Oil's massive struggle just to get into the playoffs prepared it well for this series.
GO OIL! And pardon me now as I get a bit f*cked up to celebrate!
Take care,
PK

What an awesome game! I could never tire of watching the Redwings lose early in the playoffs. A Devils sweep of the Rangers and a early exit for the Redwings is all I could hope for in the first round of the playoffs. It sucks we had to miss this last year but it sure is great to have playoff hockey back.

XXXIV - Sorry if I overreacted to your post.
PK and Oil fans at large - congrats on an unbelievable win. Predictably, I avoided most of the game in favor of 24 and then caved and tuned-in for the third period. Four third period goals from Edmonton. Makes me want to vomit, but hats off to 'em, they earned that one and they earned the series.
Surprisingly, the loss left me mutting four-letter words under my breath but little else. Guess I'm more scared of my better half coming out from the bedroom to kick my ass for waking her up. Well, that and I was hardly surprised. It's par for the course the past three seasons with this team. I'm really not sure what they should do with it. I believe in all those players, and Zetterberg played his ass off. But Manny has waited his whole career for this chance and he came up lacking. He's a great guy, but the Wings need to go goalie shopping in the off-season or get their rookie Jimmy Howard ready for real action. It would be a mistake to blow this team up as some Detroit columnists have suggested.
I was glad to see Yzerman on the ice tonight. That, if nothing else, made watching the last period of this game (and some of the first) worth it. He, too, played very well when he played and I hope he doesn't make a snap decision about retirement. The guy is one of the true greats in the game and it's impossible for me to imagine Red Wing hockey without him.
Ah well, for me it'll be another year of re-watching the three Cup championship DVDs of 97, 98 and 2002. Well, that and the Pistons (thank goodness they pulled their game out tonight).

Ah, but here's a key stat you won't see in the AP box score in the morning: Edmonton won 65 percent of the faceoffs, with a 41-25 edge. That's how you neuter a puck-possession team like Detroit.ddtrane wrote:The Wings had a 17-2 shot advantage until the Jason Williams penalty. If I was a Wings fan, I'd be suicide watch right now.
Now, where's my bottle of Captain Morgan or Johnnie Walker Red?

Sorry about your Wings. I'm a Bills' fan, so I know the pain of defeat in the postseason.
But I will PAY YOU if you watch only the third period of every remaining Oilers' playoff game this season. You're my newest good-luck charm.
Take care,

Marginal? Fernie averaged more than a point per game for his entire four-year career at PC -- 153 points in 147 games. OK, he wasn't the Hobey Baker winner, but those aren't marginal numbers.Zlax45 wrote:Sully wrote:Legace and the Wings fell apart in the third. Unbelievable effort by the Oil. Don't go blaming Legace just yet. He didn't push the puck in on the 3rd goal, and Hemsky went 1 on 4 on the final goal before he loses possession and receives the pass from Samsonov.ubrakto wrote:XXXIV - Sorry if I overreacted to your post.

Honestly, PK, I may end up rooting for the Oil at this point. (At least I can now safely watch the rest of the playoffs without a straight jacket.) I hate to sound like I'm channeling Larry Brown, but the Oilers won the right way and there's no hate from me just because they ousted my guys. Besides, if the Wings can't be crowned, I'd just as soon see a Canadian team win.pk500 wrote:Todd:

Fate was on the Oilers side for their last two goals. However, give credit where it's due. 3 of their 4 goals came from attacking the net. Pisani's first, he wins a battle along the boards, then circles to the slot to put home the rebound. Hemsky's first came from his refusal to stop fighting for the puck until he heard a whistle. Lucky bounce? Sure, but it counts. Hemsky's second was probably the most impressive. The guy tried to maneuver through three defenders, lost the puck, but still put himself in position for an incredible pass by Samsonov.
They played a great third period, and the crowd at Rexall was insane.

Legace wasn't great, no question. But he wasn't awful, either, as Greg Millen pointed out during the CBC broadcast tonight.
If Wings' fans are looking for scapegoats, try these guys on for size in addition to Legace:
Shanahan: 1 goal, 1 assist, even
Lidstrom: 1 goal, 1 assist, -4
Datsyuk: 3 assists, even
Datsyuk was hurt, so I'll give him a bit of a pass. But Shanny and Nick didn't show up in this series at all. Legace shouldn't shoulder all of the blame.
Take care,
PK

Hey, you're not channeling Larry Brown. Instead, you're showing class, and I appreciate it. ddtrane - Don't get me wrong, I'm not pinning this whole thing on Manny. The series was a team loss, no doubt. The defense in general just collapsed in the third period tonight. But I think two of those goals Manny should've been able to handle. The team needed him to make big stops and he came up well short by giving up four in a single period.
I really don't know. To me, he wasn't awful. He had a lot of good moments (hell two double-OT games), but he just didn't seem to have
"it" and some of his post-game quotes -in terms of how he reacted to losses- made me wince a bit. I mean it's the playoffs and goalies have to rise to the occasion. Rolosson did and Legace seemed to shrink. I never faulted Ozzie or Cujo for Wings playoff exits, but I think Manny failed his first real post-season test. He's not exactly a young guy and in Detroit that'll cost you a job before you can blink. It may not be fair, but it's reality.

Must be me...But Paul Pooley was the head coach and his dump and chase made me fall asleep way too much. When Pisani was in college the only player on PC worth watching was some guy named Nolan Schaffer (yes the forward from the Sens bro) who was an oustanding goalie at PC and stood on his head every night.pk500 wrote:Marginal? I hope Fernando well...

Here's something for Wings fans to think about. And I am surprised none of you saw it or said anything yet. In the tying goal during the Oils PP, Samsonov just throws the puck into the net and CLEARLY Pisani or Smith (I can't remember) knocks the puck down (High stick) where it starts to roll and consequently it leads to that rugby scramble resulting in the Helmsky goal. If they call it a high stick right away, the faceoff is in the neutral zone and back to square one. Maybe the outcome would have been another one.
Todd, I understand what its like when your team loses. But at least the Wings played with heart, desire, and urgency. When down a goal or given a powerplay, they capitalized.
The Stars on the other hand was just totally lifeless and empty, and were making their offseason plans once the playoffs started.
Now I will be hoping for Ottawa and Edmonton in the final round.

It was Horcoff. And as only Greg Millen of CBC pointed out, it wasn't a high stick. Horcoff's stick was lower than the crossbar when his stick made contact with the puck. His swing started above his shoulder, but contact was made with the puck below bar level.10spro wrote:Here's something for Wings fans to think about. And even if it was above crossbar level, McGeough didn't call it right away and stop play, so it couldn't be reviewed.

You're right pk, he didn't call it at all actually (that was his mistake), so the play went on resulting in the tying goal, but I thought the stick was above the crosslevel.

Bringing up bullshit about the division they play in is something Detroit cannot control. Plus they had a winning record against your teams of "Steel" 28-10-3 .
It had nothing to do with why the Wings have lost to your Oil. They were outchoached and outplayed period. Thanks for pissing on Detroit's great season.
This doesn't matter now but look at the records before you diss Detroit's regular season.
