Phones and tablets are far more multi-purpose devices than consoles. Phones have become essentials in most people's lives.
Console gaming is still a hobby for which the hardware price has almost doubled in the last decade and the software price has jumped at least 25 percent. Are the games that much better, more novel and deeper than those on the Dreamcast or PSX? Sure, they look better. But other than the online gaming infrastructure and basic conduits to other entertainment options, what are these current-gen and next-gen consoles really delivering?
I also don't like how MS is shoving Kinect down our throats. I have little interest in Smart Glass, either. And don't even get me started on DRM.
My gaming money nowadays goes towards my kids. My kids are perfectly fine gaming on ipad and iphone. Hell, it saves me a ton of $$ too. The only mofo out there is that Mario and his Nintendo friends which my kids can't get enough of.
For me, I don't really have the need as much to game. I am like DB, I think I spent like an hour total in the last whole month on my 360. If I miss out on these next gen consoles, i'm not really going to care. There are other things out there to fulfill my entertainment needs than a gaming console. The idea of gaming console is sort of starting to sound old fashioned too.

It's funny, this keeps coming up. The difference is that I use my phone EVERY SINGLE DAY for hours per day. It's how I do everything...stay productive, stay connected, get sh*t done. All stuff that won't happen on a console. It's way more of a disposable income purchase than a phone is. Hell, I think I've turned my Xbox/PS3 on for a total of like an hour in the past three weeks. That was to play an hour of GRID 2 and realize it was a piece of crap so I could send it back to Gamefly. I get much more done, and much more enjoyment out of my phone/iPad and my 500+ dollars.
Then maybe you're not their target audience?
Some people play their consoles everyday for hours, I'm not one of them anymore but a lot of people do. So I think it is a valid comparison, just because its not for you personally doesn't make it any less valid does it?
I tend to not speak about items that do not pertain to me (usually). So it doesn't make it valid...in this case.
Haven't been able to watch much at all today except for the Mirror's Edge trailer - I can't wait! So happy they announced this!
$500 for the XBONE sounds about what I expected. Speaking of the cell phone comparison, I am surprised that Microsoft didn't announce some kind of subsidized package for the XBONE, i.e. XBONE for $300 but you're tied into a contract for 5 years of Xbox Live or something.
I think a lot of the videos for the next-gen games aren't going to look much better than current-gen games due to limitations of web-video. It's the same when you look at videos of high end PC games - Crysis 3 in videos doesn't look that great but when you look at it in person (even at 1080p outputted to TV) it looks phenomenal.

But bottom line is that I'm gaming less and less. My kids are playing far more on their mobile devices than on a console. So it makes little sense for me to shell out $500 for a console. There are just far too many other important things to inhale my money, such as kids' soccer, lacrosse, basketball and travel hockey, kid guitar lessons, downhill skiing for family, college educations for three kids, building equity through home improvements, car and mortgage payments, portfolio investments, scotch, etc., etc.
Something has to give, and a $500 gaming console is an easy choice to skip. If this thing drops to $350-399, I'll probably get interested.
I am not disagreeing the price is high but it's not crazy considering I paid $600 for a PS3 when they came out. It's all a matter of perspective and what hobbies you enjoy more. Frankly I am going to spend that money on a new set of irons and maybe I will buy a console at launch. However it doesn't change the fact that people will buy the consoles.
MS problem is not with their price but their arrogance. They are displaying the same short shortsightedness that Sony showed with the PS3. When you launch a console if you have a high price point you n eed the hard core gamer. Well MS has alienated the majority of hardcore gamers with the policies on used games and right management. It's absurd I can't take my old games and donate them top a hospital for kids to play. In the end the price point won't Kill the XB1 it's the "our s*** don't stink" attitude the company is displaying.
In a few hours we will know Sony's deal so they are either going to capitalize from this or do the exact same thing and if that happens the next gen is off to a rocky start.

I never sell my old games. However, I do on occasion buy old games. Considering I am years behind on many games that would interest me due to the fact I try and spend a ton of time with my kids and the fact that games would inherently cost more bothers my fiscal conservative side. It is also a matter of principal. I should be able to buy and sell something I legally purchased anyways. I saw this coming many years ago though - with the online marketplace....
I did just preorder the new Xbox on Amazon.... I can't decide if I should preorder more locally and try to re-seller's market. I have done this with almost every console since the PS2 and done well each time.

Well, I think you were crazy to buy a PS3 at $600. But then again, I would think nothing about spending $120 on a pair of boxing gloves. So you're right: It's all a matter of perspective.

Yes I am.. I did sell my PS3 a few months back since it was nothing more than a blu-ray player for me.... and the only game I ever purchased for it (some version of the show).

Not like they haven't done enough already but Sony can deliver the death blow with a sub $400 price and a September Launch.
Wow MS, just wow. When the crowd starts chanting Sony, Sony you know you just lost big time.
Cool. Ps4 in my house for next gen, then. Like bd said above, I hardly ever traded games in, bought used very infrequently, and bought a s***-ton new, even at full price. I'm the guy ms wants everyone to be, yet I'm going Sony.
