I'll be preordering my 3G later on this week. I'm just waiting for my Ebay sale to go thru. I won some $$$ in an NCAA pool too. I'll basically be paying about 1/2 the retail price with all my supplemental cashLeebo33 wrote:I stopped by Best Buy to pickup some toner and and gave the iPad another test spin. Since they weren't crowded I was able to sit for 30 minutes and spend some more time with it. They had two of my favorite apps installed...MLB and LogMeIn. This gave me a much better feel for what I would actually be doing (along with surfing the Net) with an iPad. Watching a baseball game and then controlling my home desktop PC and playing OOTP from the iPad had me hooked. I then went over and tried a netbook and realized how much it sucked compared to the iPad. Best Buy didn't have any in stock but an Apple store did so I picked up the 32GB version. Obviously it is much cooler when I have *my* content loaded and I am sitting down relaxing instead of standing in an Apple store with the bright lights reflecting off the unit. I'll admit that I was dead wrong on my first impressions and after further time with it I think it is cool as sh*t.RallyMonkey wrote:Anyone that tells you it's a must have device is kidding themselves. But as a "luxury product" for those with the $$, it's fantastic.
I would definitely put it in the luxury department, but with 4 of us in the family now using Internet devices/computers it's not bad to have 3 around (barebones PC, Macbook and iPad) plus an iPhone when I'm away from home.

I'm curious D, why the 3G model? I have been trying to find reasons to justify a possible exchange for the 3G but can't seem to come up with enough to warrant the extra few hundred bucks and the $30/month.I'll be preordering my 3G later on this week. Sure i had a moment the other day when i was at my daughter's gymnastics studio and was like, "hmmm, be cool if i had 3G to surf right now" but then i popped open a book and jumped on the iPhone to check out scores and was all set.
Just wanted your reasons behind it....maybe they'll sway me.

Any suggestions on cases/screen protection?
This might be a good place to start:

One advantage would be travel. Some hotels may have Wifi, some may offer it for ridiculous prices.RallyMonkey wrote:I'm curious D, why the 3G model? Curious to see if Navigon, TomTom and others might update their GPS apps. for iPad.
I thought the same thing Rally. To be honest I have been wavering on getting the 3G and just getting the WiFi. I have my iPhone that I could jump on if I need to in a 3G area (I can't even get 3G where I live). I just thought why not get the 3G model "just in case". One reason I was leaning towards the 3G was the fact that there will, undoubtedly, be some iPad only apps coming out in the coming months that I won't have access to if I am out and about. Also, I like the fact that you are not tied into a 3G contract. It is pay as you go. If a contract was required I would already have the WiFi model. There is only a slight price difference in the 32 gb 3G model and the 64 gb WiFi model. Bottom line, I am still undecidedRallyMonkey wrote:I'm curious D, why the 3G model? Yeah, it's not really "pay as you go" but you can cancel the data account whenever you want. I would think a pay per use pricing strategy would get a lot more people on the 3G bandwagon. 30 bucks for some people who would rarely use it is a bit much...but then again, it's all about the breakage and how much people pay for how much data they use. They LOVE the guys/gals who use it once a month online.
I know sales are pretty good for this thing but you have to wonder if Apple is causing a bit of 'decision paralysis' with all the models and options. Could be impacting sales slightly.Diablo25 wrote:I thought the same thing Rally. To be honest I have been wavering on getting the 3G and just getting the WiFi. I just pulled the trigger
I went with the 64gb WiFi model. After some "deep" thinking I just couldn't justify the 3G model. Like I said before, I do not receive a 3G signal where I live. That coupled with the additional cost (more expensive model + optional data fees) pulled me towards the WiFi model. I can always go to the trusty iPhone for 3G surfing when needed...as Rally suggested above.
I sold my recently purchased Nook (which I really liked) on Ebay for a VERY nice price (almost got what I paid for it). I'll be using the iBook feature for my eReading fix. I also won a nice little chunk of cash on an NCAA pool.

Welcome aboard sir. Geez, i hope i didn't talk you out of the 3G model with my question.I just pulled the trigger I went with the 64gb WiFi model. The nook appears to be the loser for a lot of people here. Sport is selling his, you sold yours, and i'm on the verge of ebay'ing mine. I really like it a lot and there are two reasons why i MAY hang onto it. First, it's smaller and lighter than the iPad so holding it for extended periods is a little easier, and second, reading outside this summer which you simply can't do with the iPad--nor would i want to be carting it to the beach or sh*t like that.
When Barnes and Nobles finally releases their iPad app i could end up in the best of both worlds and simply grab whatever device suits the reading need at that moment...so right now i'm thinking i'll hang onto mine....but time will tell i guess.

After having over a week to use one at work I have decided not to get it. Right now it is in the cool phase and it really is cool. I tried using it as a eReader and it fails in that department for me, hurts my eyes.
I'm sure like the iPhone I'll break down and get one some day, maybe when they release the next version but right now it really doesn't do anything for me and I have finally gotten out of the stage where I need the next thing.
Plus the App prices are on the expensive side IMO

Haha...that's exactly what I did. We got one for our office because we develop new ways for hospitals to use technology and after having one in my office for a while has pretty much proven what I thought from the jump...it just doesn't fit in to my life. It is a damn fine device tho...so I can see the appeal for those who feel it actually does fit in their lives.Danimal wrote:After having over a week to use one at work I have decided not to get it. Yes it is an excellent device I am not knocking it in anyway. My only uses would of been Reading, and like I said I can't I have an eye condition and really using an eReader is easier then reading a book for me. But the iPad ugh no idea how anyone can stomach that for a few hours of reading.
Second use would of been watching videos / netflix movies. I can do the first on my iPhone and what Netflix offers for streaming is subpar IMO which is why I barely use it on my PS3 or 360.
The whole 3G thing sticks in my craw as well, I don't want to pay twice. How is it my Nook uses 3G and I don't pay anything, but for apple I need to double pay?

I work in a hospital and we got one to test drive as well. The idea is to use them for meetings and whatever else they can think of.
I got to try it out a little bit. It has peaked my interest in getting some kind of mobile device for reading. For a personal purchase though, I found too many things it didn't do that for $500 I'd demand. Little storage psace, no file system, no way to plug in an SD card or memory stick, etc... talked me out of considering one for myself pretty quick.

Because you are downloading 25K books on a Nook...not 25mb websites all day long and streaming video. It's completely different. I can definitely understand, but I still think it should be by the KB instead of a flat fee.Danimal wrote:The whole 3G thing sticks in my craw as well, I don't want to pay twice. It definitely appeals to me. I have an aging laptop that I use in my living room for basic internet and entertainment. The iPad will essentially be replacing that laptop. All of the available apps are a big attraction also.dbdynsty25 wrote:It is a damn fine device tho...so I can see the appeal for those who feel it actually does fit in their lives.Danimal wrote:After having over a week to use one at work I have decided not to get it. Anyone that's in the market for a couchside computer/laptop would be wise to look at it...no doubt about it.Diablo25 wrote:It definitely appeals to me.
