It's going to be a media circus in VAN as T. Bertuzzi returns to the Garage for the first time since the big trade. So much soap opera that the Ducks organization has scheduled a press conference this morning.

Guess it's time to get the lynchmob together again now that a Flyer threw another questionable hit.

Where was the lynchmob for when Scott Parker cross-checked Phaneuf in the face this weekend? The play was a virtual carbon copy of the Boulerice hit on Kesler.

UPDATE: Hartnell gets 2 games. This is actually less than I thought we'd see (I was thinking 4-6).

Two games. What a joke! Where is the supposedly, league crackdown on heads? Hartnell may not have had a malicious intent to injure (and we don't know the status of Alberts yet) but the last time I saw the video, Alberts didn't even have the puck and was still run over.

Does Philly think that they are the only team that finishes their checks?

Sooner rather than later, another team is going to take some liberty at a player like Richards or Briere and a whole can of worms will explode in Campell and Bettman's faces.

Wow, that Parker stick to the face has to be a 10 game suspension or the whole NHL discipline system is a farce. I'm surprised this incident didn't get mentioned in this thread before the Hartnell hit considering it happened two days prior. Very selective morality.

[EDIT] LOL. I looked around and it seems Parker didn't even get a one game suspension.

Hartnell's hit made me cringe not because it was terrible, but because it was so completely unnecessary and avoidable. 4 or 5 games would have been better. I just imagine how I'd feel if someone put that kind of hit on Gagne in his first game back from concussion.

I agree with Mark Messier that the main thing players need to learn from that incident is not to suddenly stop five feet from the boards, bend over, and aim their faces at the dasher with an opposition player a split second behind them.

Key word there is ANOTHER.

If this was incident #1....it may not have even got any play, much less a suspension. But, do you really have to hit someone when they are down?

Hartnell's classic line....trying to finish my check.....nice! I don't remember my coaches telling me to finish my checks by smashing my elbow into my opponent's head.

They must work on these lines in training camp.

To the Bruins credit, they let the Bergeron thing go and went out and won a hockey game. Next time, I don't think the fans will let them "forget".

Back to back shut outs for Louie and the boys in a night full of expectations as Bertuzzi returned to VAN. No boos for big Bert, instead the crowd saved them for #25 chanting 'Pronger sucks'. The game got chirpy in the third as the Ducks paraded to the sin box.

DET-CAL, P. Datsyuk scored two beauties. What do you guys think of D. Phaneuf's hit on Hudler in mid-ice collision?

What I don't get about the Hartnell hit is Alberts appears to be on his KNEES a full second or two before Hartnell even hits him!

You'd think an NHL quality player would be able to let up, or even come to a complete stop when you see a guy on his KNEES in front of you rather then driving him into the boards.

Excactly plenty of time to adjust and just take the puck away from him without contact.

After a great start to the season Havlat returns to the Hawks lineup tonight. Hopefully he'll work his way onto a line with Lang. A line of Havlat, Lang, and Williams or Havlat, Lang, and Sharp sounds pretty good to me. Now let's see if Marty can stay healthy. With all the hitting going on that's not a given.

NHL approves new (aka old) schedule.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=223975&hubname=nhl

Number of divisional games reduced from 32 to 24. 15-inter conference games scheduled as well, guaranteeing every NHL team will play each other at least once a season.

It's a step in the right direction but ultimately, I would prefer that every team play a home-and-home against every other team and then the balance can be made up of divisional games with one or two against the remaining conference opponents, just like the good old days.

It's a progress, better than what we have now, that's for sure.

Agree. I don't just want to watch Crosby or Ovechkin play my Kings on TV, I want to see them LIVE. If all I wanted to do was see them on TV I could just watch the nationally televised games. Oh wait, that's only if my cable company even carries VS. Every team should play in ever arena at least once a year.

Kind of late, but I wanted to comment on that Parker video. Am I just naive when it comes to hockey fights, or is it kind of cheap to throw blows to the ribs like Parker was doing?

What's worse is that the guy got away with murder, no penalty from the league for that vicious crosscheck to Phaneuf.

Going back to how TV is limited in some US cities for watching the coolest game on earth, the NHL has to be the worst marketing sport in the world.
But when you failed at attracting a US audience, why not try the UK, right Bettman?

Slowly but surely this town is starting to buzz about the Hawks. They're finally starting to talk about them on the radio. A nice crowd of over 16,000 came out to see the Hawks take it to the Yotes.

Havlat's return has seen the Hawks score 11 goals in 2 games. Havlat himself scored 43 seconds after returning. Dustin Byfuglien (my daughter walks around saying his name all the time now :D ) has been making the most of his opportunity. He gets the hat trick tonight from the blue line. With the Blues, Wings, and Hawks having good seasons it feels like old times. 8)

The Honda Center in Anaheim is the WORST arena in the NHL from which to watch a game on TV, hands down. The lighting is horrible, giving the entire rink a milky glow, and the cameras are seemingly mounted in a different county.

I would consider hiri-kiri if I was a Ducks' fan and had to endure that for 41 telecasts per year. Simply BRUTAL.

But it was all worth it tonight, as the Oil put a 4-0 hurting on the F*cks. Nice sweep of the home-and-home, with a 9-1 aggregate score!

It was so uplifting to see Fernando Pisani back on the ice tonight for the Oil. Dude overcame ulcerative colitis over the summer to return to the Oil's lineup for the first time this season. He lost 30 pounds, was sh*tting blood and was within days of surgery to remove part of his colon, which probably would have required a colostomy bag and ended his career, before a last-ditch change in medication started him on the path back to the lineup.

The Oil are 7-4 in their last 11. I'm very encouraged.

Take care,
PK

Garon has been playing pretty well. Do you think KLowe deals Rollie, PK? (can i fit anymore nicknames in one phrase?)

And where has Cogliano come from? I knew of him, and that he would be a good prospect, but I never expected him to come on so soon, and be in the top 5 of team scoring!

Unlikely. Roloson has been a proven, solid goalie for the Oil for the last 1.5 seasons, and I don't think the Oil could get much for him considering his age, 38. But much depends on the Oil's position in the standings and team needs as the trading deadline approaches in February.

Still, I don't see Rolie going anywhere. He has played very well in his last two starts and seems to be exiting his funk. The Oil D men are playing better, notably Smid and Grebeshkov. Smid has become much more physical this season, and it's making him a better player.

But the unsung hero of the defense is Allan Rourke. The guy isn't flashy -- in fact, he has no sheen at all. But he has played a very simple, very stay-at-home defensive game for the Oil since he was recalled from the AHL when Souray, Pitkanen and Greene got hurt, and it really has stabilized the back end for the Oil.

Rourke has been so solid that I'm in no hurry to see Souray return, especially since the Oil's long-dormant power play is starting to click without him.

It will be very interesting to see what the Oil does next week with Rourke. If he stays in Edmonton past Dec. 8, then he must clear waivers to return to Springfield. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation for the Oil.

Souray and Tarnstrom will be healthy eventually, which could make Rourke expendable. But the guy has been such a quietly valuable asset that you'd hate to lose him on waivers in an attempted move to Springfield. I think other teams have noticed Rourke, and someone would grab him if the Oil tried to move him back to the American league.

But if the Oil keeps Rourke when Souray and Pitkanen get healthy, who goes to Springfield? Smid and Grebeshkov arguably are too talented for that league, and they've played well the last 10 days. No way does Tom Gilbert go to the AHL; he's been the Oil's best overall defenseman this season.

It's an interesting, and nice, problem to have. If anything, I think the Oil could package one of those defensemen and one of their excess forwards at the trading deadline to get picks or a nice offensive asset. Top Oil D prospect Taylor Chorney apparently is playing very well at North Dakota, which possibly makes one of the Oil's "tweener" NHL-AHL D men even more expendable.
Gangrel wrote:And where has Cogliano come from? I knew of him, and that he would be a good prospect, but I never expected him to come on so soon, and be in the top 5 of team scoring!
Cogliano was a stud at the University of Michigan and has played well for Canada in the World Juniors. Hockeysfuture.com has raved about him for the last two seasons, so he was on my radar screen.

Honestly, I think he's a better overall player now than the more heralded Gagner. Samwise has a ton of skill and hockey sense, but he's a bit weak defensively and is knocked off the puck too easily due to his small stature.

Cogliano has great speed -- only Matthew Lombardi of Calgary and Andy MacDonald of Anaheim have shown me better wheels this season -- and has become a very trusted penalty killer for MacT. Plus he is willing to "get dirty" in the corners despite his small size and never stops competing. Cogliano has a deep skill set. Does nothing great but does everything well, and there are few players in the NHL who can match his speed.

I really, really like Cogliano. He's quickly become my second-favorite player on the Oil, behind Stoll.

Take care,
PK

I haven't seen much of Rourke since he's been called up. The Oil haven't been on TSN or HNIC in a few weeks, so I've missed them.

Gagner has tailed off since the beginning of the year, but he may be worth keeping around just for his shootout skills. His last 2 or 3 goals have been beauties! And until lately, the SO is the only way the Oil were winning. ;)

Good to hear Rollie is back too. Well, I knew he beat the Ducks on Friday I beleive, but whenever I saw the Oil on TV lately it was during losses, and Rollie looked a little "off".

But, I can't complain about winning 4 of the past 5, and they are showing the Pens-OIl game on TSN on Wednesday, so I know what I'll be doing!
