I know there are some good ol' hard rock fans around here, and I want to recommend everyone check out the new Clutch album, "From Beale Street To Oblivion". They've been steadily moving away from their metal roots over the past several albums, and this one comes across as ZZ Top on steroids. The song "Electric Worry" is boogie blues of the highest order.
Thanks for the heads up. I LOVE Clutch but did not realize they had a new one out. Thanks!EZSnappin wrote:I know there are some good ol' hard rock fans around here, and I want to recommend everyone check out the new Clutch album, "From Beale Street To Oblivion". This one might be my favorite of theirs. I think they've reached the destination mapped out on the last two albums.Spooky wrote:Thanks for the heads up. I LOVE Clutch but did not realize they had a new one out. Thanks!
I've been listening to it since it leaked in early January, but those early MP3 rips just don't match blasting this in the car yesterday. I took the long route home just to finish hearing it in one sitting.

Very cool. I liked their last effort, but am still not totally sold on the keyboards/organ.EZSnappin wrote:This one might be my favorite of theirs. After 4 or 5 listens, I feel safe saying that the KOL have another great cd on their hands. A big thanks goes out to ITunes for selling the tracks ahead of the Tuesday (4/3) street date. Certainly improved my weekend getting to listen to some of these great songs (Fans, Knocked Up, My Party, On Call) which fit right in with the rest of the getting-to-be-impressive KOL catalog. I've never seen 'em live before but am definitely looking forward to seeing them at the Tabernacle in Atlanta in June.
Edit: I guess ITunes made a mistake by making Because of the Times available to buy and d/l yesterday. I just checked ITunes again today and it says, "available 4/2". Wonder how that was allowed to happen, and how long until someone noticed.

I'm curious, a week later, hasn't anyone else given a listen and fallen in love with the new Kings of Leon album? I can't stop playing it, from top to bottom (including the extra tune available through ITunes), I think it's a masterpiece. For someone who grew up on old Kiss, Black Sabbath, the Doors, Led Zep, Creedence, Boston, AC/DC, early Aerosmith, etc., and graduated to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, RHCP, etc., I can't tell you how happy I am to see someone like KOL advancing the rock and roll cause the way they have with these 3 albums. Great job fellas...can't wait to see you mix these new songs in on tour next to songs from Aha Shake and Youth and Manhood. I've already got June 1 circled on my summer calendar.

I obtained the new KOL album when you first pimped it in here. It was my first exposure to KOL, and it left me ambivalent. Solid, but it didn't strike me as something I would play over and over.
I don't mind hard rock, as EZ's recommendation of Clutch was spot-on. That's a really cool record. But KOL just didn't do it for me.
Different strokes, as they say ...
Take care,
PK

I like the Kings of Leon's music, but the lyrics and especially the vocals leave a lot to be desired in my opinion. Every one of the those groups with the possible exception of the Smashing Pumpkins have much better vocalists (and some of them actually have 2 that are better). There are parts on the new album, like the screaming in "Charmer", that make me cringe and there are other parts where it is very hard to understand what he is saying. There's a point where you have to realize you don't have the range of David Lee Roth and deal with it. I don't want to sound too harsh because I really like the music.GTHobbes wrote:For someone who grew up on old Kiss, Black Sabbath, the Doors, Led Zep, Creedence, Boston, AC/DC, early Aerosmith, etc., and graduated to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, RHCP, etc., I can't tell you how happy I am to see someone like KOL advancing the rock and roll cause the way they have with these 3 albums.
Thanks for the comments, fellas...took me a few listens for most of these songs to sink in, but once they got their hooks into me, including the afore-mentioned Charmer, I can't stop listening to 'em. ("She stole my karma, oh no...Sold it to the farmer, oh no...Born in West Virginia, oh no...Married to the preacher, oh no"...great stuff to go with the rocking riff, IMO). I can see why people would either love or hate the singer's voice., though I just can't believe the amount of great classic rock music they've got inside their heads, especially considering how young they are.

I've been listening to the Nationals' upcoming "Boxer" album a lot lately. It's mostly slow to mid-tempo stuff but the arrangements are livened up a lot by interesting, unintrusive use of horns and strings and drumming reminiscent of Stephen Morris' work with Joy Division. The closest comparison I can make to the National are the Walkmen, but that similarity is only in spots, and more in sound than in lyrics.
If you can't find "Boxer", their 2005 release "Alligator" is also strong but not quite as cohesive. Neither album is as dull as I've made it sound here. Check 'em out.

Bought the new Ted Leo and the Pharmacists album. I love his previous three albums. This is probably his weakest effort, but still a pretty good mix of catchy old school new wave/punk. The biggest sin is that it sounds like what he's done before. I don't think artists need to reinvent themselves all the time, but it's good to change it up a bit from album to album.
I am going to see him later this month, which should be a great show.

Leo puts on a great, great live show. I haven't been able to get into his studio stuff, but ever since seeing him back in the Chisel days I've been a fan of his live act. The songs really breathe and open up on stage. I hope he's in good form when you catch him.Brando70 wrote:Bought the new Ted Leo and the Pharmacists...

I'd encourage everyone to listen to:
Feist - The Reminder
It's very good.
Also:
Lavender Diamond – Imagine Our Love
The Twilight Sad – Fourteen Autumns And Fifteen Winters
David Karsten Daniels - Sharp Teeth
Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha
Radical Face – Ghost
You should probably listen to all of these records too.

I love that Marc Broussard cd. Very good from start to finish. It's rare these days that there is a cd with no throwaway tracks on it, but this is one of them.dbdynsty25 wrote:Hey PK...a while back you recommended Robert Randolph. Good CD by the way. He is very similar to Marc Broussard. His CD, Carencro, is damn good. I suggest you obtain and check it out.
I'm loving this album right now. I don't think it's too far off Hearts of Oak or Shake the Sheets either...In my opinion a little less punk feeling to some of the songs.Brando70 wrote:Bought the new Ted Leo and the Pharmacists album. I'm not sure whether it's because his albums have helped me through some rough times or what, but I absolutely treasure everything these guys have put out. Can't wait to see them again live.
Not sure if it's been mentioned, but the new Arcade Fire album is pretty cool too.

Thanks for the tip on Feist's new album. Grabbed it yesterday, listened to it for the first time this morning. REALLY liked it, just as I really dug her last record.
Thanks again!
Take care,
PK

My 'obtaining' computer was down for the past 2 weeks while I was working on some PHP scripting for somebody but I finally shut that one down and turned on Old Bessie. I was able to get that Kings of Leon and I definitely dig it. I'll have to check out their older stuff now. Thanks for turning me on to them.
And since I'm a glutton for punishment I'm going to highly encourage everyone to listen to "Frances the Mute" by the Mars Volta yet again. I've recommended it several times in music threads here but nobody has ever commented on the recommendation. Either people gave it a listen and hated it or they just don't think my taste in music warrants checking it out. I know I like a lot of metal guys but that's not all I listen to. the Mars Volta is a progressive rock band with elements of latin music and jazz. Give this damn album a listen to already!

I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

First off...definitely get the older Kings of Leon stuff. Their 2nd album is my favorite.ScoopBrady wrote:My 'obtaining' computer was down for the past 2 weeks while I was working on some PHP scripting for somebody but I finally shut that one down and turned on Old Bessie. Second...I have trouble with Mars Volta. While I like their stuff to some extent and I appreciate their talent, their stuff becomes absolutely EXHAUSTING for me and my ears after a while. I keep trying and every once in a while, if in just the right mood, I'll really dig it. They are great for throwing on the headphones while vacuming the house!

Mars Volta is one of those bands that almost seem to hate their fans. Each record becomes more and more of a challenge/difficult. Frances the Mute is as close as u get to a decent listen from start to finish from them. The live shows are waay to much for me. 13 minute versions of 8 minutes songs, not my deal. I do have faith they'll release a true "mind blower" one day, but it might be a while...
And now for something totally different: Anyone think the new Bright Eyes record is kinda of lazy & tired?

Very. "Four Winds" is about the only song worth a crap to me.greggsand wrote:And now for something totally different: Anyone think the new Bright Eyes record is kinda of lazy & tired?
Then again, I think the whole Conor Oberst worship by the music press is sort of a joke. If he wasn't in his teens and from the Midwest when he broke through, then the "next Dylan" tag never would have been hung on him. Oberst is no Dylan, and I don't think his stuff has progressed much at all since the time he was 14.
A lot of hype, not much substance.
Take care,
PK
