Re: Kicking The Tires On A New TV...Advice Needed
Divot, thanks for the reply.
I toyed around with the settings some more last night and I found a very nice happy medium. I'm much more reassured with my purchase now. I was switching back and forth between the Blues game and Monday Night Raw (a show my son watches). Both looked great, especially Monday Night Raw.
As I stated in my impressions of The Show, this tv set has this game looking stunning.
I'm really looking forward to the baseball season on this 65".
My only issue now (and perhaps it's not really an issue, but more so something that bothers me just a bit) is with programming like NBC Nightly News and The Big Band Theory. I watched both last night and what I notice often times is a softness to the host and actors faces. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be, but it just doesn't seem as clear as it should be.

No problem. This is the best gaming tv I've owned, and it's not even close.TCrouch wrote:I don't use mine for anything other than gaming, so I've got nothin'....sorry

Yeah, I've had a ton of TVs that I use for gaming, and I concur. I went from older LED Toshibas to a Samsung 3D (that was a thing for about 3 months!), then a curved 4K, and then this HDR set. I still use the curved 4K for my TV watching as it's much better for a room full of people to watch at the same time from weird angles, but for gaming...my KS800D just kills everything.

Have not seen the issues with the faces, but I'll keep an eye out for it. Might be just a function of getting it broken in and past those 200 hours of use....
Re: Kicking The Tires On A New TV...Advice Needed
Probably a very simplistic question but one that interests me at the moment as I have the original Xbox one (not the "s") and I'm thinking of buying a new TV (on a very limited budget
).
So my question is whether the games will look better, worse or the same on a 4k UHD TV as opposed to a 1080p HD TV? I suppose my thinking goes back to the days of the PS2, which seemed to look a whole lot worse on a HD TV than a CRT set.

It depends. Most of the good TVs have great upscalers, and your content will look perfect. But budget TVs do skimp on the upscaler, and it could be bad.
I would suggest looking at rtings.com. They do a nice job of reviewing TVs and sorting them by price. You will have a better idea of where the TV you are looking at stands.

Anyone pick up the new LG OLED yet? I might pull the trigger on it sooner than later.

Last year, the OLED dropped to around $2000 for the 65-inch towards the end of the year.
People still have doubts about the motion processing for sports and input lag.
Also OLED doesn't have as bright an output as LED yet.
But there are rumors that next year's models will address a lot of these issues.
Sony is buying OLED panels from LG and doing their own sets, with their own processing. But stupidly expensive right now.

Was JUST reading some comparisons of the new Sony to the new Samsung last night. Seems like the 900E is a winner for it's price point.Pete1210 wrote:What is the new Samsung model# that you got?Diablo25 wrote:Sold my 60" Vizio HDTV to a friend of mine today. Personally i switched from Sony TV's to Samsung models probably 10 years ago and I am never going back. Every Sammy I have owned has been fantastic and best of all lasted very long periods of time. I don't have brand loyalty when it comes to much but for TV's it is always going to be Samsung. My KS8000 is the best set I've ever owned.

Agree on the KS8000 being the best set I've ever owned as well. Netflix shows and movies look great. Gaming looks really really good.Danimal wrote:Personally i switched from Sony TV's to Samsung models probably 10 years ago and I am never going back. Definitely it's a great set, I had no idea they had a newer model. I wonder what it offers above the KS8000sportdan30 wrote:Agree on the KS8000 being the best set I've ever owned as well. It arrived today and is pretty badass. I looked at that Sony but it was a bit more than the Sammy. The firmware update fixed an annoying HDR/Game Mode settings save issue. Extremely happy with it. I had a Sammy years ago and LOVED it.

Re: Kicking The Tires On A New TV...Advice Needed
Yeah, late last year I was talking about how much Sony's TV business had fallen, to the point they were no longer really a popular option for anyone outside of Sony loyalists. My last two TV's of the SDTV era were Sony Wegas. But the flat screen HDTV eras saw other Samsung, among others put out as good or better TVs, but Sony maintained a premium price that no longer made any sense.
I bought a Toshiba as my first HDTV, and it was because it seemed to have a fantastic scaler for watching SD content, of which there was still a ton of at that time. Many of our favorite DirecTV channels had not converted yet.
I wanted a Samsung KS8000 last year, and fully expected to buy a Samsung this year when I decided to wait. But for the price point and bang for the buck, rtings.com convinced me that the Sony x900e was the 4K TV that hit my sweet spot between price, features, and performance. I'll admit that the stand was also a factor, as we were going to set it on a really nice TV stand we bought when we moved into our house. Those little legs on the edges instead of a center stand was going make it tough to fit on the stand.
But really, the differences between the TVs at that price point are not all that much. Rtings does a nice job covering every aspect, but the difference between a 7.9 and an 8.2 in one aspect is really not enough to worry about. Basically, both the MU8000 and x900e have good input lag, and delivers solid HDR for gaming. If you put them side by side, different people may prefer one picture over the other, but once you have one and set it up, they both are going to look great.
I can say that I'm happy as hell with the x900e, and then got $100 back from Best Buy when they offered it for sale two weeks later. That made me wish I had gotten the 55", but honestly, my wife is really not into that. If I were single, I would have had the 65". We were replacing a 40", so the 49" still feels like a nice bump up.

Apparently there's another new firmware update out for the KS8000 and reviews are mixed regarding the brightness and backlight.

I haven't gotten a notification for one that I recall. The one thing I don't like is if you don't update the firmware the TV apps don't work anymore.sportdan30 wrote:Apparently there's another new firmware update out for the KS8000 and reviews are mixed regarding the brightness and backlight.

So I bought the LG C7 about a week ago and it's AMAZING. What is everyone's take on extended warranties? I generally turn them down, but this tech seems so fragile (emphasis on 'seems' - I have no data to back this up). I'm considering at least a 2 year with Best Buy.
