MLB 09 The Show Sneak peek

Damn that is sweet! MLB 2k9 has been fun, but I see videos like this and it makes me want to ask my neighbor if I can use his ps3 for a bit.. since he never uses it. I just might ask him this weekend. If he does, I'm going to purchase this game just to see what the buzz is all about.Diablo25 wrote:Couple of vids I saved.

Some quotes from Madden designer Ian Cummings over at OS
I just wanted to post over here in case the devs read this forum...
To the SCEA dev team: you guys have really set the bar as to what sports games should be. After a few of us got our hands on it, we have forced our entire Madden design team to go through the game, take notes, and come up with ideas that could apply to us - and the one universal happening has been that everyone has been 100% blown away by the detail and quality of the product. From the commentary to the animation to the graphics to the presentation to the depth...you guys knocked it out of the park (bad pun intended).
I don't want to make it look like our opinion matters more than anyone else or anything, but I did want to say - from the Madden design team - GREAT job to all those involved in making this year's game. You've set the bar extremely high for us and everyone else in this industry (which is a very good thing IMO).

Ian gets it, that's not really a doubt in my mind and that was a very nice post.
But EA is a monster corporation and we'll see how far they let him go when some of the changes he is making is going to alienate to Tourney crowd. Read his thoughts on the QB sneak, how they are removing the Lead Blocker (glitch used by tourney players) and what they want to do with the run / commit feature. Sorry temporary thread jack.
Anyway back to the Show, a fricking awesome game even though all my Cubs games are at night and David Ortiz was leading off and playing 1B in a game I just played and I can hit the ball worth a s***. LOL

I've seen D. Ortiz play first several times although being a lead-off it's a bit odd. Actually, very odd.Danimal wrote: Anyway back to the Show, a fricking awesome game even though all my Cubs games are at night and David Ortiz was leading off and playing 1B in a game I just played and I can hit the ball worth a s***. I switched batting view to "Wide" and I'm finding that it's easier to determine whether or not it's a strike or ball better than on the default setting. It still doesn't excuse how poorly I'm hitting, but I'm averaging around six hits a game at this time.
Had a thriller last night against the Indians in Cleveland. Down 3-1 in the ninth, I rallied for a run against Kerry Wood with a man standing on third with one out. I'm thinking extra innings at this point. He promptly strikes out Ankiel and Glaus to end the game. I was so impatient. I think I gave in to the emotions of the crowd as they were going crazy.

I started a RTTS last night and my full name is in there. How cool to hear Vasgergian and the ballpark announcer say my name. My son was amazed and will be making his own player this weekend.
Made myself a SS and was drafted by the Mariners. My first game I went 2-4 with 2 singles and 3 RBIs. My first play at short, though, it was set up to be a double play. The ball is hit a little up the middle, I make the play and promptly hit the triangle button as that is what you usually hit when throwing to second. Well, it changes when you are playing the field in RTTS. I throw it home and the announcer says "He gets in front of the ball nicely, sets his feet for the throw and throws a strike to home. Unfortunately, no one was going home! What the heck was he thinking?!"
Classic.

I played the third and final game of my Tribe season-opening series in Texas last night and exploded for 11 runs on 19 hits!!! With 4 HRs!!! Their third starter (Mcarthy, I think?) couldn't find the strike zone, usually I don't draw many walks, I'm not that patient, but it was easy with this guy. And when he did find the strike zone it was like BP.
Nice variety in the first three games of my season (All Star default). An 8-2 loss, a 4-1 loss and an 11-5 win. I'm looking forward to my home opener next.

I'm usually in the 6-10 hit range, but only scoring like 2 runs a game. In big spots I just get a bad case of the sweaty-palmed butt-puckers and choke away the big opportunities so far. That'll change as I get more comfortable with the new timing I'm sure, but DAMN it takes a lot of concentration to win.
I'm still ridiculously ecstatic that this game got walks right. Joba came in for me mid game last night in a spring training contest and just did not have it, giving up 5 walks in two innings. (Amazingly close to his real life Spring performance this year
) For a lot of those walks, I was pitching smack down the middle, and on one the last two pitches I made were fastballs down the middle and BOTH were out of the zone. (With decent to good meter-work on my part)
In the past in this series, you could always just work low and the corners, which would really limit the CPUs offense, and you wouldn't really ever have to worry about a walk. The umpire's variable zones do a good job of keeping you on your toes, too.
I'll have to experiment with not moving the left stick while hitting in this game. Maybe it's my love of cursor games, but it seems unnatural for me to not try to move the bat to the ball when I swing. I almost always (try) to move the bat somewhere before I swing.

The double play animations are simply amazing...I get giddy every time I have the opportunity to turn one.
Had a great win last night with my Jays in Fenway. An 8-7 hitfest in true Fenway style with 3 dingers a side including two from Papi and a grand slam from Adam Lind. The game ended with BJ Ryan striking out Youk with Ortiz on 3rd. The fist pump from BJ and Barajas were priceless!

You know what is so great about this thread? Very, very limited talk about the dreaded "S" word.
Except for some dropping the pitch speed, it seems to play pretty darn good out of the box and as you improve or are having trouble, just moving up or down a level seems to work.
At this early stage, I really don't know what I would need to change. Love it.

Kicked the holy hell out of the Twins 11-0. Scoreless through the first 4 innings and the Twins second baseman was playing like a demon, turning plays on what looked like sure base hits 3 times. Finally picked up 2 in the 5th before things got really ugly - as brilliant as the Twins defense was on the right side of the diamond they were the exact opposite at short and third. Something like 7 of the runs were unearned. Rolen hit a 3 run dinger in the 7th as we sent 10 to the plate. Good start for Richmond who went 6 scoreless.fanatic wrote:The double play animations are simply amazing...I get giddy every time I have the opportunity to turn one.

I've turned the Blue Jays into a team of Dave Kingman's - there really aren't too many pitches we won't take a swing at. Think I've yet to hit 5 walks taken in the first 10 games of the season! Each game I tell myself to stay patient and as soon as the first pitch is thrown the hacking starts.
Best wishes,
Doug

Haha...that's how I roll too. Oh well...still fun.dougb wrote:I've turned the Blue Jays into a team of Dave Kingman's - there really aren't too many pitches we won't take a swing at. Love the cut scenes where Cito's chewing some poor chump out after another hacking display - "I don't know Cito, I wasn't going to swing at the pitch 3 feet off the outer edge in the dirt and then something just forced my bat forward as if someone was swinging for me!"dbdynsty25 wrote:Haha...that's how I roll too. BTW, I'm impressed by how much weight Cito Gaston and Bobby Cox have lost! - Cito in particular looks like he could run out and take his old place (circa Hand Aaron Braves) in the outfield

Best wishes,
Doug

Yeah the Ortiz thing was odd. I started my RTTS last night and hit two home runs in my first 2 AB's. Now I'm like 5-23 haha.
I absolutely hate the new base running controls in RTTS, I wsih I could skip out of base running all together.
I'm kind of holding off on starting my franchise until we get opening day rosters, I also upped the swing timing slider to help me out. My problem is I always swing early, i feel like I have to swing when the ball is on top of me to get a perfect timing.

Has there been any sort of developer comment on this issue, at OS or otherwise?Danimal wrote:I think it is more of a roster update issue, I thought I read that the AI is screwing with the line ups really badly and it doesn't matter if the roster has everything set right it's going to screw it up on you.jLp vAkEr0 wrote:They really need to update the rosters. Rockies had Helton batting lead-off vs Santana, ridiculous.
I believe when you first start up RTTS, there is an option to skip baserunning. Not 100% sure but I think I remember that. You may have to start over if you want this option.Danimal wrote:Yeah the Ortiz thing was odd. I started my RTTS last night and hit two home runs in my first 2 AB's. Now I'm like 5-23 haha.

Nope, you can change it on the fly, along with any of the other RTTS settings...Pete wrote:en you first start up RTTS, there is an option to skip baserunning. Not 100% sure but I think I remember that. You may have to start over if you want this option.

Speaking of double plays, I hit a slow hopper to Reyes of the Mets the other night. He charged in and did a flip behind his back to the second baseman who then threw on to first. I beat the play at first, but the forceout at second was gorgeous! I rarely ever watch replays of the other team, but this play was one heck of a Web Gem!

So this poster, Finding Tim at OS posts the following questions as he's considering purchasing a PS3 just for this game:
hey guys. I've been browsing these forums for a good two weeks now and I can't express how excited I am about this game. That message from the EA developer was the icing on the cake.
I've got 500 dollars right now (college student) and I am strongly considering buying a PS3 with The Show 09 being the primary reason.
Here are some questions that I must know before making the purchase:
1. When hitting, do you use the left joystick to aim (like MVP 05') or do you merely click X or square? I read one review that said there was NOT directional hitting.
2. How does the fielding throw meter work? in gameplay vids it looks like you just click the button of the base and the strength of the throw is predetermined... if so, this is a gameplay killer for me.
3. How does the gameplay compare to MVP Baseball 2005?
4. Oh shnikies I have class I will be back later to post the rest of my questions. Consider this 'part 1'
thanks in advance,
Tim
Russell from SCEA then replies a few posts later after others have given their input:
If you buy a PS3 I'll send you a copy of the Show
That's awesome!
