The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread

It's 8 months now or about that, and I can't tell you have much I've enjoyed the iPhone.
But as a phone it's okay, held back by ATT. As a "smartish" phone, I can't want for anything more.
The other day, I needed a phone number for an old friend. I had a white pages webapp, so just search the number, found it and easily put it into contacts.
I know that's such a routine thing but on other phones, it's more hassle than anything else. Plus I use my iPhone to store all my contacts now with extended information like email and webpages because when I sync them back up they will appear on my mac.
It's stupid just how simple everything works on this phone. I was never a text message guy before I got this phone. Before if people sent me something I would just call them back because it was easier. Now with the keyboard, it's so easy to coherent messages instead of the text message speak.
I know that sprint touch and verizon voyager does more things but this iPhone is unparalleled in ease of use and design. It's not perfect but it is, was, and continues to be a game changer.
I had a blackberry at my old job and at first it was cool, but after a year with it, I was no more effective than just waiting to read my emails at my desk later in the day.
If you've never had a iPhone for a long period of time, all of this sounds pretty stupid. And you might as well queue up some really corny apple music to play as you read this message. But for those that have an iPhone, I think you know what I mean.
It just makes me appreciate a well designed product.

Couldn't agree more JRod. My neighbor was considering an iPhone but decided on a Blackberry (which is still a nice device). The day he bought the Blackberry he came over to show it to me. I spoiled his party when I showed him how easily, and most times better, the iPhone did the same functions his new Blackberry did. With the iPhone, its not what it does, its how it does it.JRod wrote:It's 8 months now or about that, and I can't tell you have much I've enjoyed the iPhone.

Except email and data speeds...I'll agree. My touch is phenomenal for everything else...assuming I'm next to a wifi hotspot.Diablo25 wrote:Couldn't agree more JRod. And on the subject of email, I am having some slight problems coordinating my emails thru Gmail on my itouch. I added my two main accounts to Gmail for my travels but only one of the email accounts appear on my itouch. So for me to make sure that I have received all my emails from both imported accounts, I would have to go to gmail.com and on inbox check them there. The long way.
I currently have imap enabled on my itouch. Suggestions?

Exchange support coming with 2.0 update. Sync addresses, calendars, etc.
App. store, developers are free to set whatever price but Apple gets 30% (!) cut of proceeds to cover hosting, transaction-processing, etc.
App. store is direct to the iPhone or sideloading from iTunes.
Developers can distribute free apps., in which case Apple doesn't collect anything.
However, there will be a "nominal" fee for all iPod Touch apps. So it sounds like any third-party app. for the Touch will cost something.
Unless there's a way to load such apps. without the App. Store or iTunes.
They demoed games, like a little Spore game and a Super Monkey Ball game.

The game demos were very nice. I wonder how sensitive the accelerometer is for SEGA's Monkey Ball game. This year is should be a pretty exciting one for all things iPhone after seeing those examples of only two weeks development using the SDK:)Diablo25 wrote:I just watched some of the presentation over at Apple's site and I am very impressed with the game demos they showed. The Accelerometer built into the iPhone was used for steering a space ship in one of the demos...very cool potential.

So you can't run multiple tasks at the same time? What is this, Windows 3.0?
Nice SDK.

A few daemons do run in the background while you're using others apps (i.e. for incoming phone calls, text messages, calender alerts...). Not sure if you can program these into your app using the SDK but it should be possible for something like an IM client.wco81 wrote:Yeah that makes no sense for things like IM.
But the Apple apps. like the email and web browser programs can be running in background?
Probably limited RAM or the OS takes a lot of the available RAM.
You have to remember this is a tiny mobile device not a full fledged desktop with a 24" monitor so you don't have much screen real estate to work with. The apps themselves are super quick so most users don't even realize they are opening and quitting applications as they flip between them. Plus you can write code that allows your app to interact most of the other apps already on the iPhone if you want it to show you an address on Maps or bring up the photos that are already present on the device, things like that. Its an awesome SDK if you haven't dl'ed and checked it out yet.dbdynsty25 wrote:So you can't run multiple tasks at the same time? What is this, Windows 3.0?

Count me in the iPhone club, just picked one up yesterday... I was curious if anyone had any experience with the whole "Jailbreak" thing, and if it's worth the effort. Are there any killer apps that this enables? Or should I just wait for the official apps to start rolling out this summer?

I'd wait. You never know when the next software update might lock-up your phone.Leadfoot5 wrote:Count me in the iPhone club, just picked one up yesterday... Unless there is something you absolutely can't live without then it isn't worth all hassle or potential hassle you could go through. The voice recorder app had me interested in jail breaking but I just couldn't do it.Leadfoot5 wrote:Count me in the iPhone club, just picked one up yesterday... It's an exceptional piece of hardware and by far the best phone / PDA device that I have ever owned. Congrats on the purchase, you'll love it!
Thanks guys. Yep, I'm loving it so far. The only thing I wish I could do is send photos to other phones, but other than that the functionality has been great.
And thanks for the advice on Jailbreak. I'll wait for the supported apps to start coming out in the summer...

Just got one for the wife and she loves it.
But had a question about charging. We bought a case 'INCASE' and it's nice, but it doesn't fit in the docking station. So We figured out we can take the plug out of the docking station and just put it in the iPhone directly to charge it.
Is this safe? any difference between direct charge or going thru the docking station except for the iphone being upwards and not flat?
Also, is it safe to charge the phone while in the case? I remember reading about it may overheat it but not sure if that's real or bs.

It's all fine. No difference at all (docking station and case or no case)Inuyasha wrote:Just got one for the wife and she loves it.

Been a couple of stories about the impending release of a 3G model.
One analyst predicted this coming quarter.
Would be pretty hard for them to hide though, because new phones often show up on a public FCC site, while undergoing certification.
AT&T 3G network is suppose to be poor but if they can keep the same unlimited pricing structure, the product will be better.
There are a lot of anecdotes about people with iPhones looking up something in the middle of a discussion to back their point, annoying others.
iPhones has certainly seemed to increase Internet use on the go.
