They knew they were going to be short units...so why not make half of them core systems that people need to buy the accessories for. They knew people would jump all over them because it's "all that's left" and they knew they'd want the hard drive, headset, etc. They are making a killing off this sh*t.
I would normally agree with this theory db, but then why is it that if I drive down to the Best Buy in Burbank (the one near the great indoors/outbacl/olive garden etc), or even the Target on the corner of Laurel Cyn & Osbourne.
All I see is all the accessories on the shelves. Does not at all look like anyone is buying em' up as you say.

They came up with the 2 SKU concept for marketing reasons to launch stating that the systems start at $299, which sounds a lot more reasonable to most people.
I tend to agree with DB on this one. Once I did the math and realized it would cost me some $80-100 more to 'Premium-up' a Core system, it sure seemed to me that it was a sneaky way to get me to pay more. One guy at a CompUSA or BB (can't remember) told me som BS about the Core being more mod-friendly. His argument was that it was an attempt to be more attractive to the mod-crazy Japanese audience, and pointed to the faceplates as more evidence to that. I didn't buy it, but what do I know? He insisted the Cores would be easier to get into to add mod chips etc.
From what I've seen, however, I don't think there are as many Cores as Premiums out there. Seems like the highest ratio any store I was checking out was 1:1, with most stores getting 2:1 Premiums and some much more than that, like 10 Premiums and 2 Cores.
Still, after running around the day before launch to reconnoiter the various launch outlets and seeing plenty of Wiresless controllers and HDs on the racks, I thought it wouldn't be tough to kit out a Core. The next day, all the HDs were gone as were all the wireless controllers. Seems like every place I've checked since, and online, are just as sold out of HDs and wireless controllers as they are systems.

Yeah but that only goes to show that there aren't enough systems out there to begin with. If they don't produce enough systems, people aren't going to be buying accessories for them. It's also a hellova lot easier to produce the controllers/faceplates/etc. than it is for the systems so you're always going to see more of them.
I've got it from a good source that Meijer stores will be getting a new shipment to their distribution center on Tueday and most stores will be restocked by Friday the latest. In terms of quantity they are expecting same as launch sop 10 - 20.
I didn't even think to check them during launch and they are open 24 hours.

Danimal,
I think we'll some on Tueday, but I don't know when to stop in. Right when the stores open or later in the day when they expect a shipment.
