I may or may not be the only one noticing, but scoring is way down again this year. So far this season it's at 5.63 gpg, down from 5.89 last year and 6.17 two years ago. Usually scoring goes down as the season progresses, so assuming it ends at around 5.5 that is roughly equivalent to the 2000 season, and circa 1950.
Whether or not we should care is debatable, just worth monitoring as I am a stats geek, and it could come up again at the end of the year if the NHL talks about bigger nets.
I would prefer shrinking the goalies to bigger nets, just to avoid the whining from the large number of people who don't understand that the real size of the nets has decreased dramatically from what it was in the 80s when 50 goal scorers and 100 point seasons were common.
Eric Lindros is to announce his retirement from the game. Big #88 had his best days with the Flyers uniform. If he learned to play with his head up a bit more he could have extended his years. Wonder if B. Clarke will congratulate him.
I could not be happier with the Hawks so far. I can't believe how well the kids are playing. I don't think anyone expected them to be playing at such a level so quickly. Each scored in a third straight victory over the Redwings last night in one of seven home televised games this season. Next year all home games will be on tv finally! I love the direction this team is moving and I'm really digging Rocky running the team. I was a little skeptical when Peter stepped down but Rocky is doing a great job.
I'm also happy with the job Savard is doing as the head coach. He's really got the team playing a different brand of hockey in Chicago. It's exciting to watch the defensemen join the attack and players actually carry the puck into the zone rather than dump it in. The power play is also performing well. Now let's see if the kids can keep it up for a full season. The good news is Havlat will return at some point and take some of the pressure off of them.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.
Good perspective on the Hawks, Scoop. Not only are the Hawks one of the rising young teams of the NHL, they also have one of the best in-game promotions in the league -- Mullet Cam!
An 80s-style hockey mullet is superimposed over the face of fans during play stoppages and put on the Jumbotron.
Fantastic!
Take care,

Everyone in hockey is talking about Kane, Toews, Cogliano and Gagner as the top rookies of this season, but there is a new leader in the Calder Trophy voting based on what I saw last night.
Carey Price was unbelievable in goal for Montreal last night against the Leafs, especially in the first period. This kid is nuts good.

I agree PK - Price is looking like a ten year vet in the net. Against the Bruins the other night he was great, real solid on his positioning and anticipation. Of course it is the Bruins, who are not exactly having an easy time scoring on anyone since Bergeron's injury. But if they could get one solid scorer they'd be a real threat, especially if Tim Thomas continues his absolutely lights-out goalie play. Amazing how few he's letting by - it seems he's just getting shelled all game and yet his save percentage is 95% with a 1.65 goals against average.
I guess paying the big bucks for Fernandez really lit a fire under his ass!
C. Price was awesome during the World juniors and a key player in Canada's reign. He was supposed to not even start the season and have a good year in the minors. From the games that I've seen him play, I like the fact that he doesn't get unfazed, he doesn't panic when his team is down, and is always in position for the next shot. Habs may just have the next Patty Roy.
Good points about Thomas, E. The guy is standing on his proverbial head right now and should win the Vezina if he continues at this clip.
Leclaire has been superb in Columbus, too. Who would have thought that Tim Thomas and Pascal Leclaire arguably would be the two best goalies in the NHL after six weeks of the season?
Also don't overlook another no-name playing unreal in net -- Dan Ellis of Nashville.
Take care,
PK

I am also not surprised to see Carey Price turning heads. I remember watching him in WJC's and was amazed as he saved essentially every shot so calmly. Everything was hitting him in the chest. It was pretty remarkable anticipation and technique for a player at that level.
Speaking of goalies, former 'Nucks backup D. Sabourin seems to have stolen the number one spot from M.A. Fleury in Pitts. While his numbers are not as good as the other names mentioned earlier Dany seems to have the coaches' confidence.

After watching a thoroughly mediocre performance by Sabourin against the Flyers, I am not sure if that one is due to Sabourin's strong play or Fleury's terrible form this year.
