Just watched the documentary "Anvil: The Story of Anvil" and I highly recommend it. It's depressing yet uplifting. You don't have to be a fan of the band or the genre of music to appreciate this movie. Hell, you don't even need to be a fan of music to appreciate it. You might not have even heard of Anvil before but I guarantee you'll be rooting for them by the end of the movie. Lips' spirit and sense of hope will make you question your own. Good stuff, this.

I made the mistake of telling the ladies in my department that I watched the "Legend of Ron Jeremy" documentary. It wasn't perverse in the least. It was rather interesting. Plus, I had a free non new release rental.
By the way, the girls weren't offended. They just thought it was gross that I'd watch it.

"Hurt Locker" was insane. It was so intense that I needed a shower afterward.greggsand wrote:Saw The Hurt Locker last night. Hands down Best Picture IMO. Up in the Air may win it as the material is easier to handle, but Hurt Locker was A++++.

So far this is also my choice for best film, but I have yet to see quite a few that look really good. I've also liked Fantastic Mr. Fox, Precious, and Inglorious Basterds (liked it more than I thought I would).greggsand wrote:Saw The Hurt Locker last night. Hands down Best Picture IMO. Oh, and I would also recommend Baader Meinhof Complex, a German film about the 70's terrorist group the Red Army Faction.

We definitely have enough vampire movies/shows for nowmatthewk wrote:So which subject has been the most overused in movies lately? Seems like every month there's at least one new movie covering vampires, zombies, and doomsday/end of the world.
Of course, I usually love zombie and vampire movies, so I'm only encouraging them to make more

True Blood & Vampire Diaries keep us very entertained.
No problem.F308GTB wrote:Just watched in on Netflix. Very interesting show. Thanks for the suggestion.JackB1 wrote: Also, a great documentary is "Food, Inc." If you want to know what corp America and the gov't don't want you to know about the food you eat. Very eye opening and disturbing at the same time.
Pretty scary stuff huh? Now I understand how e-coli got into the spinach crops. Seems like you are playing Russian Roulette every time you eat a burger. Staying away from beef and pork was the best decision I ever made. For those that can't give up beef, pork & chicken, you should check out this film and then start shopping from local "real" farmers and not from corporations. Most of the animals you eat never see the light of day.

Have not seen Big Fan yet but I'm dying to see it. Suppose to be an interesting look at modern sports fanaticism.sportdan30 wrote:Looking forward to seeing Hurt Locker.
Anyone seen Big Fan? It's gotten good reviews over at rottentomatoes.com.
And yes, Hurt Locker is so far my personal best picture choice. I saw it when it was in theaters. I've got to see quite a few more films to make any final decisions but it's certainly good.

My wife and both liked it, much more than we expected (they marketed this really, really poorly). I thought it was one of the better coming of age stories in recent years. The characters had surprising depth, and the Twilight girl was quite good.RobVarak wrote:Saw "Adventureland" over the weekend. I loved it, my wife hated it. It's definitely a quirky little movie, and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes thoughtful character studies.
I was floored by Kristin Stewart. Just a great performance. As written that character could've been trite, your typical stuck in adolescence brooding post-teen. Her performance was so soulful and essential.

I also liked that it was an 80s movie that didn't use the 80s as a constant retro gag, but really captured the feel of being a teenager working a crappy summer job at that time. I really enjoyed the movie.RobVarak wrote:I was floored by Kristin Stewart. Just a great performance. Another one that surprised me recently was 500 Days of Summer. It manages to be funny and romantic without being a romantic comedy, and it's very clever how the story is told out of sequence.
