He can beg all he wants. He was a very good defensive midfielder in the European game.
He was only a defensive midfielder in his dotage. In his prime with both Wolfsburg and Rangers he was closer to a No. 10, and was an incredibly creative player and incisive passer. His work with the US mirrored that change. As he got less mobile, he switched to a holding role, but he was always an outstanding passer and field general.
Zelalem has looked tidy but hasn't impressed me much so far. The Myanmar game was a lackluster effort by everyone against a terrible side. He and the squad looked better against NZ, but I think he was notable more for the security of his passing than any particular creativity. Still haven't seen the Ukraine match, but that result...awful.

Well deserved UEFA champs, they controlled the play and stepped it up when they had to. The D would give their fans the odd scare here and there but their front three were just lethal. After a mediocre season last year, Barcelona is on its winning ways again.
Great weekend for sports. Just finished watching the inaugural women's World Cup with Team Canada just edging over the great wall of China. They defended very well and a last minute penalty made the difference.

I was rooting for the other team. Barcelona is like the Yankees. When they win it feels mediocre.

If you cant provide real grass pitches you shouldn't be hosting a world cup. Dumb Canadians.

So true. But you know that they use the real green stuff for smoking right? And who knows how much Blatter and CO got for this event?
Now watch this ahem beautiful event, and stop whining.
Meanwhile, in my neck of the woods, Newcastle have decided they can manage without the best coach in the league. To me, it seems ludicrous to waste the 6 months John Carver spent lulling the rest of the league into a false sense of security, particularly given the thoroughness with which he went about his work - until he took the trouble to explain otherwise, I genuinely thought he was out of his depth, so convincing was his impression of a man promoted far beyond his abilities.
One thing the Toon Army can be assured of, though: with their existing ownership, they will see his like again.
Well, jimmy thinks that is just a bunch of pony tailed girls running on fake grass... But seriously I enjoyed watching a few matches so far including Japan-Swiss, and Costa Rica-Spain yesterday. England showed no attack whatsoever against France. Watch out for "Les Bleus". The group of death is definitely worth watching where team USA won their first match but I wasn't totally impressed with their performance as H.Solo had some great saves. They'll get better though. Saw some Cameroon action too where a couple of their forwards could play in the boys team.
Brazil also won yesterday as they should advance in a walk to next round which it could hurt them in a long run. Once the second round starts, the event will pick up steam. I think Germany will be tough to beat.
I'm the last person to ever get excited about a friendly, but I couldn't help but get a little pumped up over that US showing versus Die Mannschaft today. Neither team had its full compliment of starters out there, but it was a very entertaining game. Down the stretch the US was absolutely brilliant. And that winner by Wood...a beauty.
I'm enjoying the WWC. I won't miss a US game and I'll take in the odd game here or there when I can. The improvement in the level of play in the women's game in the last fifteen years or so is pretty amazing.

Copa America started. My boys looked like they were going to run Paraguay over but they let off the pedal in the second half over the weekend that allowed a 2-2 tie which felt more like a loss. Brazil just got over Peru yesterday with Neymar easily being the star of the game.

Never happened.
Great win for Colombia.
Great win and sweet revenge from the WC in Brazil. Sanchez and Valencia did a great job containing Neymar who had to play near the midfield. Colombia defended very well in the second half and did a super job neutralizing Brazil's star.
