Of those, Costa Rica is probably the poorest, but they're still a solid squad. Honduras is dangerous, Mexico is now back on form, and the US can beat Spain....or play a lackluster game against El Salvador.

There is no way that Uncle Sepp allows a WC without Messi and Christiano Ronaldo. I predict cash-related "miracles" for both sides. :)

Argentina will be fine. I watched Portugal play last night vs Denmark, and they are absolutely shite....don't deserve to be there.

Ditto. Right now, I really believe that whenever they play Brazil, it's more of a mental lapse than anything else. Pound for pound they match the stars that Brazil has to offer, if not more. In the past few games that I watched this rivalry, all Brazil has to do, is to play a patient game, get to 0-0 by half time if possible if not better, and Argentina starts to crumble defensively.

They'll be alright for the WC, the last time they struggled so much they ended up winning the big prize back in 86 with Bilardo, which I think is getting a few phone calls from Grondona to step in, if Maradona continues to struggle. I wouldn't be surprised if he was replaced one bit.

And Portugal deserved to lose. Period. They got lucky in the end but lacked ideas while trying fir ghe equalizer. But in the end, they'll advance as well.

I think the French clubs have all decided that now is the time to complain about English Clubs, with City being the latest accused.

Egged on by the Gallic Gonk, no doubt. I see there are no German clubs targeted...he must be collaborating.

Meanwhile, in the case of this youth he is, infact, involved in a legal battle with Rennes himself over the nature of the contract that was signed.

FIFA would have to wait for the outcome of that case first, and then carry out any investigation (which could not be done before due to the fact that they would be open to a kicking in court from us if they find us guilty, impose a penalty, and then Helan is found to have just cause in his case).

Any ban that they would impose would be turned over by the CAS anyway due to the fact that it will have been Helan's fault in declaring himself able to transfer when he was not (City will drop him like a hot potato if he loses his case).

Option 2 would be for our owners to buy Rennes, burn it to the ground and stake the directors over an ant hill. :)

In further updates, it appears Rennes are trying to uphold an agreement signed when the player was 13 years old (good luck with that, as European law dictates than no one under 16 can be the signatory of a legally binding contract), and that City also have in their possession a clearance document from the French Football Federation indicating that the player was free to sign with City in Feb 2008, when he was 16.

Time to do a Man U I think and counter-sue.

Argentina goes down again, 1-0 to Paraguay to drop them to fifth in standings, and only I believe one point ahead 6th place Uruguay.

Any chance Maradona gets sacked?

Oh, and Haedo's winning strike was pure tango in Asuncion. Once again Argentina's D was indecisive and once Veron got the red card, they just lacked of any cohesive ideas up front. I think they miss Riquelme dearly who quit the team, but I would have never thought that they would be in the fifth spot at this time of the qualies.

Portugal and France also continue to struggle.

Honestly it is beyond me how anyone ever could've thought Maradona would make a good coach. His hiring was indefensible at the time, and proving to be disastrous.

US team gets a much needed 3 points last night. Pretty lackluster performance by the team, and questionable tactics by Bradely (game screamed for Ching, and Clark as de facto attacking central mid?), but 3 road points go a long way. The fact that T&T had essentially nothing to play for and the stadium was half-empty didn't hurt.

There is an (unsubstantiated) rumour that Maradona had gone to a meeting with the head of the Argentine FA about something completely different, and was seen by a TV crew coming out of the building. He informed them that he had been asked to take over the national team (and I don't know whether that was deliberate or accidental), and once broadcast over the TV it gained a momentum which the AFA couldn't have stopped even if they wanted to, as they had not settled on the appointment of the real national team coach.

Several newspapers have ripped Maradona about his handling of players from the bench, and over his lack of tactical acumen. Many have pointed out that Maradona has no formal training as a coach. In short stints coaching two Argentine clubs -- Mandiyu and Racing -- he won only three of 23 games, losing eight and drawing 12.

Maradona was also ridiculed in some circles for taking players to a Roman Catholic mass before the Brazil match last weekend -- a 3-1 loss. He was also widely reported to be relying on some form of witchcraft before the Paraguay game -- another loss.

Not trying to defend him one bit, but people have to remember that this National team was already struggling under the tutelage of Alfio Basile who decided to step down. Players have to be more accountable, and right now the D-men look a tad slow for my taste. Grondona has to have his share of faults for hiring him, and it's ironic that even Chile will be making the WC under Marcelo Bielsa whom Grondona fired after the debacle of the last WC appearance.

Right now, the team is a burning inferno under all the pressure fans and media alike are putting on them.

Yeah, I don't think that a defence which includes the once-great-but-now-not Zanetti and the seriously-got-rumbled-at-Real Heinze is up to much. I don't really know a great deal about the other 2, but Argentina always used to produce hard as nails nutter CH's, even in their poorest eras.

The other two dudes are Dominguez and Papa. Much younger but not with the experience that both Zanetti and Heinze possess. They are a couple of quicker options that Diego could you use and are playing in the Apertura but when you're hanging by the ropes, you just need someone that can have a voice in the back end.

Against Paraguay, Maradona brought 37 years old Schiavi and 35 years old Martin Palermo in the second half to change things. Hmmm, I wouldn't have done that and that's where his inexperience shows.

Right now the team is a bunch of individuals doing their own thing but they're not playing as a team, there's no cohesiveness between the three lines. As I've noticed thus far, both coach and players are to blame and time is running out.

No Robinho, no Tevez...my, what ARE we going to do for players ? I wonder whether that's why you acquire a squad...a point which seems to be beyond the tabloid hacks.

It's a shame Tevez looks unlikely to be fit...I'd haveloved him to do his version of this in front of the Scots Drunk as he hammers in the winner

Unfortunately you won't see Carlitos just yet. He's hurt not only physically but also mentally after that tough loss against Brazil last week. Then again, you don't seem to need him.

Adebayor, I am sure Van Persie agrees with me: Your celebration was dumb and plain stupid.

J. Defoe, despite the loss, that was one awesome strike.

I, on the other hand, enjoyed it immensely. Arsenal fans are amongst the most ignorant, johnny-come-lately, we're entitled to success bunch you will ever come across, so winding them up with a non-threatening slide is priceless.

I didn't, however, enjoy van Persie running across to the City fans to scream 'f**k off' at them - which I heard quite plainly, and I'm in row 26. City fans, of course, just ignored him.
