Re: The really great TV thread
Never have, nor will I ever understand why Norm Macdonald is funny. If acting like a clueless moron and stating the obvious is funny I know more then a few guys who could fill that role.
To each their own I guess.

I never found him to be funny on SNL or in any of his acting roles, but he's always hilarious as a talk show guest. Love when he's on Carolla's podcasts.

He's definitely good on Carolla's podcasts (I mean how can it not be hilarious when you're banging your neighbors wife while he's out mowing the yard, lol)...but his standup on Comedy Central the other day (a month or so back) was not funny at all. He was decent on SNL, so I'll watch the new sports show, but my expectations are very low.RobVarak wrote:I never found him to be funny on SNL or in any of his acting roles, but he's always hilarious as a talk show guest. The wife and I are really enjoying Mike and Molly. Definitely not a show to watch with the kids as there are several sexual inuendos per episode, but it's still great comedy. Some of the lines are just classic and have us laughing out loud. Love the Chicago references as we lived there for a few years after college. The supporting characters really solidify this enjoyable show. Gotta say I look forward to this citcom moreso than I do Two and a Half Men and the Office.

Another new one that is fairly decent is Mad Love with Sarah Chalke and Jason Biggs. Not too bad at all...sportdan30 wrote:The wife and I are really enjoying Mike and Molly. Saw Norms new show last night, it sucked. No LOL just a few chuckles. The format is like SNL days. I think it limits his comedic talent. Betting it wont last a month.

Re: The really great TV thread
Yup, it met my very low expectations. The only thing that was remotely funny was when Blake Griffin got voiceovered. Mildly entertaining...oh and the quip about the special Olympics and all the people competing for the two parking spaces in the front...yeah that was funny too. That's about all tho.Lancer wrote:Saw Norms new show last night, it sucked. No LOL just a few chuckles. The format is like SNL days. I think it limits his comedic talent. I'll take that bet. The show is dirt cheap to make & the deal is only for 9 episodes. Oh yeah, and it's comedy central.Lancer wrote:Betting it wont last a month.
Anyway, I liked it, but I'm down with anything Norm does. I get why he rubs people the wrong way (which only makes him funnier IMO). Here's a pretty fair review of it all:

Game of Thrones premieres tonight on HBO. Since most satellite and cable providers have a free preview of HBO running until tomorrow (and the show is going to be aired about a dozen times in the next 24 hrs), there is no excuse for anyone to miss it.
I'm probably more pumped for this show than any movie or tv series ever. The book series is my favorite of all time, and the early reviews make it sound like they have done a great job translating the material for tv. If you liked Lord of the Rings at all, definitely check out the show tonight, it is going to be fantasy at its finest.

There's a lot of anticipation for GoT. Never read the books but apparently there is a big following.
Was hoping this was more historical, not fantastic/mystical. Maybe HBO with the success of True Blood is delving more into fantasy.
The guy who's in charge of the series badmouthed Lost for a crappy ending, which raised some bit of ruckus.
So they better not have things explained only by some alternate world, might and magic crap.

Absolutely loved the Game of Thrones premier last night. I was eagerly awaiting it and it did not let me down. If Lord of the Rings isn't your thing don't sleep on this because it is more Sopranos-esque in a fantasy setting than it is full-on fantasy.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.

Ya GoT was awesome last night. I've read around the net that ppl were complaining too many things were going on for a intro episode and they got confused. I think the best way to get around this is watch the first episode again. I did that and I caught a lot of things the 2nd time around which I missed or didn't get on the first take.
Also love the set design, on a big HDTV, the scenery just looks awesome.

A very adult fantasy.
That guy pimping his sister out was something.

Re: The really great TV thread
The wife and I enjoyed Game of Thrones, but (and I know that I need to let this go) I kept thinking 'They cancelled Deadwood because of EXPENSE?!' when I was looking at all the sets, and costuming, and cast size, etc etc. When I told that to my wife after it was over she said she was thinking the same thing.
Anyway, +1, some interest, will watch again, but it didn't blow us away. Dinklage was great.

Anyone else addicted to "American Pickers" on the History Channel?
I get a kick out of seeing these guys go on their antique searches. Some of the stashes they stumble upon are mind-boggling.

I was disappointed that it wasn't about guitar players.fanatic wrote:Anyone else addicted to "American Pickers" on the History Channel?

No, but they do meet a lot of guys that look like Jerry Garcia...RobVarak wrote:I was disappointed that it wasn't about guitar players.fanatic wrote:Anyone else addicted to "American Pickers" on the History Channel?

I dig Pawn Stars as well. I just don't understand why people take $10,000 items to these guys, just so that they can walk away with $4,000. Why not sell it yourself? I know quick cash is always nice, but seriously!GTHobbes wrote:I like American Pickers a lot, but am a bigger fan of Pawn Stars. On the flip side, I'd be interested to know how many of these things the Pawn Stars guys are able to turn around and sell. Who in the world goes shopping at a pawn shop?fanatic wrote:I dig Pawn Stars as well. I just don't understand why people take $10,000 items to these guys, just so that they can walk away with $4,000. Re: The really great TV thread
I guess Deadwood and Rome cost a lot of money to produce but didn't get big enough ratings. But Rome apparently sells a lot of DVDs so they might have been able to make it work.
Reviewers who've seen about a half-dozen episodes say this is straight fantasy, whereas previous HBO shows like the Sopranos and True Blood tried to go beyond the genres they portrayed, which is what made them great or broadened their appeal.
Some people have been complaining about "gratuitous" sex scenes in GoT after one episode but this is clearly a show for adults. It'll be interesting to see if the HBO audience used to those other shows stick with a fantasy show.
One thing they could do is to inject some comic elements, don't be so serious. Looks like Dinklage's character is the loose cannon/comic relief.

I don't know if anyone has been watching Law and Order: Los Angeles since NBC retooled/recasted it and brought it back on last week but it has been very good. All three new episodes have been intense and well done. I'm not sure how the ratings have been but I'm enjoying it. The Chicago Code is also on Monday nights so I' get my fill of solid cop shows that night.

I liked Boardwalk Empire but I know it didnt get good ratings for HBO, but they renewed it for 5 years. And the set design on that show must be thru the roof with it being set in the 1920s. I thought the deadwood creator didnt want to do the show anymore. And wasn't there complaints about the swearing?

Complaints about swearing? On an HBO show?
I guess those same Puritans would have despised this scene from the greatest show ever on HBO, "The Wire:"
Glad to hear "Boardwalk Empire" was renewed. I loved season one.
