Switzer=3 NCAA titles and one NFL title....not many can top that...but go ahead and bash mindlessly.pk500 wrote:Switzer was the winning head coach in Super Bowl XXX and had a 45-26 career NFL coaching record. Not too shabby.wco81 wrote:The top recruiting schools also happen to have very good coaching. There was a time when the Pac 10 sent a lot of coaches to the NFL while the dominant schools were coached by people like Switzer (and how was he as an NFL coach?). Now, the NFL-college connection is spread through all the conferences.
Take care,

College football is no longer just about the haves and the have nots, though, which is what you're implying (I think). It's a LOT tougher to stay on top now than it was 15-20 years ago.
And a great coach/recruiter can turn a program around. Look at USC before Pete got there. As PK said, look at Syracuse today. There was a time, not too long ago, that the Orangemen (not The Orange..) was an eastern power. Programs come and go, and all it takes is one or two bad recruiting classes to start the spiral into the hell that is the CarQuest Bowl.
Go back...hell just 10 years. If I would have told you back in 1996 that Boise State would be earning good bowl trips every year and finish undefeated, that Utah would finish #3 in the country one year, that Rutgers, WVU and Louisville would all have an outside shot at at national title, that Wake Forest was going to likely win the ACC and Florida State was going to finish last --- not many would have believed me.
Of course in some basic ways college football will always be about powerhouse schools. No debate there. I know that Ohio State has built in advantages over, say, Indiana. But they do ebb and flow. There was a time when the idea of Nebraska NOT being a power was laughable. There was a time when Virginia Tech and power was also laughable. NC State just a few years ago was a top flight team in the ACC. This year they finished 3-9 and fired the coach. I think the notion that we have four or five schools that rule college football with an iron fist is just incorrect.
I think keeping a program in the upper echelon year in and year out is as tough as its ever been. I mean..look at Alabama. It doesn't get anymore "traditional" than that, and they just fired their coach -- again.

I think the powerhouse schools are at an ebb right now.
OSU has emerged to the top in the last 5 years or so, same with Texas, which struggled for awhile in Oklahoma's shadow.
It's hard to compete for some recruits when the OSUs and Michigans can show those big stadiums with state of the art training facilities.

Does FLA have any shot whatsover at the #2 spot? With Michigan done and sitting in #3, if USC loses their last game and FL wins over Arkansas in the SEC Champ game, will FL get any consideration for playing Ohio State for the title?
I am going to the FL / Arkansas game Sat and would love for the game to have some impact towards a national title game.

No. I don't think the score really matters, and I believe the national champion is the winner of that game, regardless of other outcomes.wco81 wrote:Is there any chance that if the #3 and #4 teams blow out there opponent in the bowl game while the #1 or #2 teams just barely win in the title game for the #3 or #4 team to get the #1 ranking in the final rankings?
You know say USC or OSU wins by 3 points while Florida or Michigan wins by 40?

Considering about 15 guys showed up for the 2002 title game...I'm guessing not many.sfz_T-car wrote:It may not be the best time to bring this up with Db serving time in the penalty box, but LOL at Miami playing New Year's Eve in Boise at the MPC Computers Bowl.
I wonder how many alumni of the U will ring in the New Year in Idaho.

They'll probably object to checking their firearms at the city limits.sfz_T-car wrote:It may not be the best time to bring this up with Db serving time in the penalty box, but LOL at Miami playing New Year's Eve in Boise at the MPC Computers Bowl.

Actually, isn't Idaho where all the anti-government/radical/uni-bomber types hide out?
The Miami faithful may like it up there. Instead of staying at the team hotel, I can picture them staying on a "compound" somewhere, with a giant green and orange "U" flag flying above it, you know, during the standoff.

Great, the 'Cane snaps are being handed out by both the OSU fans and the Penn St fans - all you guys need is for a Bama fan to join in and all the fans with braggin' rights over the 'Canes in NC games will be here.Leebo33 wrote:Quit hatin' on the U. Just root for your teams and shut up about something you have no control over.![]()

At least we're not thin skinned like those leprechaun lovers up in South Bend. The 'Canes suck this year and we know it. Not that it takes a degree in rocket science to figure that out.
I don't think you'll find many 'Canes backers going up north to freeze our asses off staring at that blue astroturf in Boise. I'm just glad the bowl game isn't ACTUALLY against Boise St, cause we'd probably get our asses handed to us by the Broncos this year. We'll just sit here and enjoy seeing Coker walk off the field as the 'Canes head coach for the last time, then wait and see who we get as the new chief at the U. Hopefully we won't pass on a great one like we did when we let Tressel get away a few years back.
So should UF get to represent against OSU in the NC game if they win the SEC championship tonight? Considering how weak most of the Big Ten was this year, even though Michigan looks like the true #2 team in the country, UF's schedule may make the difference to the selection powers that be. The upside of a Michigan / OSU rematch is a great game to watch, of course, not to mention the fact that the SEC will likely push the NCAA for a NC playoff system.

Division 1 has a playoff system...Umass beat my alma mater today 24-17!!F308GTB wrote:Should be an interesting Sunday. Too bad we have to live with the screwed up BCS and bowl system instead of playoffs.
Yea, they renamed Division 1-A and 1-AA to subdivisions with 1-A called the Bowl SubDivision and 1-AA called the Playoff SubDivision.
My xbox live name is "The Zlax45"
I'm totally bummed out by the Rutgers loss. I'm not a fan of college football at all, really, but the season RU was having energized the school, the community, large chunks of the state, and even members of my family not usually interested in sports. (RU was like the Wii of NJ athletics!
)
Now what was a special season just turns into a 'nice' one.

My wife is a WVU grad and I was pulling for WVU, but when the game ended and they scanned the Rutgers sideline, I felt real bad for them. Great year and I wish they had a better reward.
As for Florida, I can't feel too bad for them. It wasn't that long ago that they got their rematch with FSU in the championship game. And Spurrier spent the month leading up to the game trashing the FSU offense as dirty. Better to blame the defense rather than your own blocking schemes.

went to the FL/AR game last night.....wow, what an exciting game! AR got the momentum going in the 3rd qtr and looked like they had FL on the run and then FL pulls a fake punt from their own 20 and then after the next 4 downs punts all the way down to the other endzone and AR fumbles and FL recovers for a TD! That was a HUGE turnaround in the game. All in all, was one of the most exciting games I have ever went to. Did anyone watch it on TV? Did the crowd sound loud? I felt like I was at The Swamp. It was about 3/4 FL fans. Great game and had a great time!
