Aussies go through.
three sendings off (one of which was missed 5 mins earlier when the guy picked up his second yellow card).
Graham Poll can reserve his seat in front of the TV for the final, there's no way he'll be getting one of the later games after that performance in the last 5 mins.
The Aussie keeper, Kalac, must have incriminating photos of Hiddink with a sheep or something, because he was awful. Schwarzer would fill the defence with a good deal more confidence than that.

Yes, I'm a jealous bastard.

Who's calling the ESPN2 Croatia v Aussie game. I like these two guys.
It was Adrian Healey and Tommy Smyth in the Oz-Croatia game. My favorites. Tommy's a bit of a Madden in his reliance on hackneyed cliches, but his passion and color are 100x better than any of the US broadcasters.
The US and Croatia eliminated on the same day, and Croatia on an offside goal no less! Not a good day around this house

I work at home, too. No chance for me to keep anything lightly scheduled, sadly, as the U.S. Grand Prix is next weekend at Indy.
Poor timing! The World Cup needs to move to August, after the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard.
Take care,
PK

Gennaro Gattuso , that's it.jimd wrote:I'm pretty sure you mean Gattuso. Well, I call it a slap, but my buddies were saying "Hey that's how we celebrate a goal"but coach Lippi sure didn't show any appreciation for that.
Most likely nothing will come out of it ( the papparazzi will make something out of it though) but it sure was an akward moment.![]()
And yes, it was akward.
What a devastating disappointment for the US today. It's not that they didn't make second round--I have been preparing myself for that strong possibility since the draw--but how they went out.
-Horribly frustrating calls from the refs. That Gooch PK was total garbage. He did absolutely nothing wrong and the Ghana player never had a chance at that ball.
-Ghana played their worst game of the first round, yet we did next to nothing. Even worse, Ghana got 2 gift wrapped goals, one from reyna and one from the ref. They created squat on their own.
-Bruce what are you thinking? 4-5-1 again? That formation never works for the US. Anyone who ever watches Fulham could tell you McBride is worthless as a lone striker. Get some balls and use something other than a bunkering formation!
-Those aside, I think the biggest disappointment is Beasley and Donovan. These guys have long been touted as the future of US soccer and the first true world class players we'll have, but something has gone terribly wrong. Minus a great second half against Italy for Landon (Pirlo: "Donovan was everywhere tonight"), these guys were mediocre at best for this WC. Today was maybe the worst game I have ever seen Donovan play for the US. He was unaggressive against Czech, but at least his touch was good and he made some good passes. Today he added absolutely nothing to the attack.
Don't tell me this guy doesn't have talent. I have watched every US qualifying match, and many nights he carried this team. Donovan just seems to have lost his fire. Early in his career he came up huge in big games, but the last year or two he seems to shrink (Champs League with Leverkusen, MLS cup final, today). Today he was outpaced to nearly every loose ball. Where the hell did his great speed go? Is he that complacent?
You can't blame MLS either because Beasley was even worse this WC. He had a nightmare season with PSV, and frankly I don't know what his problem is. I am done defending these guys. It was easy to see how much more purpose guys like Dempsey, Lewis and McBride play with. Hopefully this is just the beginnign for Dempsey. He's been our best player this calendar year, and what a glorious finish on the goal.
Okay, rant over.
BTW PK, O'Brien did play 45 minutes against Czech, which gives him more minutes than a number of players on the roster.

FIFA's too harsh rules mean Ghana's best player will miss their match with Brazil with a suspension for two yellow cards.

Just Watched the Aussie game on Dvr. Poll was hideous in that game seemed to call everything the opposite way, and all the yellows the reds the missed hand ball, the goal may have been offside but it was close, depends what angle you see it at but it made up for the handball anyway.
ive been more excited for the Aussie games than my own country's
Viduka looks like he doesnt care, Kewell is on a strole at times, how can they do that when Cahill is running rampant with passion for the game and country. They should take a page from his book for the Italy game .
I hope anyway. No Emerton now tho for next game thanks to the new stricter refereeing.

Nah, Kewell's goal was justice for the blatant Croatian handball the ref missed. The below quotes are from articles on Soccernet:
A heartbroken Michael Essien slammed German referee Markus Merk for a 'ridiculous' early booking which will keep the Chelsea star out of Ghana's second-round clash with Brazil.
The 23-year-old midfielder up his second yellow card of the tournament when he slid into Claudio Reyna just five minutes into the Black Stars' historic 2-1 victory over the United States.
Even USA coach Bruce Arena expressed his sympathy for Essien, claiming the tackle 'actually was good', but nothing could ease the midfielder's pain after the match.
'This is one of the worst moments of my career but what can I do,' Essien said. 'I am very sad because I don't think I deserved that yellow card. I think it is ridiculous.'
Poll, England's most high-profile match official, will have his performance analysed by FIFA's referees committee before they decide what action to take.
He booked Josip Simunic three times, only sending him off on the third occasion. FIFA president Sepp Blatter said referees were human and would make mistakes, but that this one was inexcusable.
He said he could not understand why neither of Poll's assistants nor the fourth official picked up on the error either, especially when they are wired up to communicate via radio headsets.

TRI, the referee got the second Swiss goal right.
The linesman did flag for it, so it wasn't missed as such, the ref just allowed play to continue. The reason he was right to do so is that the ball into Frei's path was not played by a Swiss player - the ball from Margairaz was intended for the right wing, so Frei wasn't considered active at that point and only became so when the Korean midfielder got a foot on the ball, dramatically altering the path of the pass.
Since the through ball was effectively played by a member of the opposing team, Frei isn't offside and the goal should stand - the referee in this instance was spot on.
According to the BBC last night, Graham Poll's explanation for his somewhat unconventional take on carding players is that the first card attributed to Simunic was actually awarded not to him but to Dario Simic. The BBC then went on to show the only occasion a yellow was issued with both players in the vicinity, and then Simic being dismissed for two further yellow cards before a further two were given to Simunic. In trying to explain away a basic lapse of concentration, Graham seems instead to have admitted that he did book somebody three times, but it might not have been the man we thought it was. A hearty well done to him.
Cheers,
Simo

That was some comic officiating from Mr. Poll. Who'd of thought, after all the talk about the need for instant replay cameras for goal line incidents and another referee to enable the official to be closer to the action, that what's really needed is an abacus so the referee can remember how many yellow cards he's handed out. Proably this is an increasing problem as officials are simply running out of space in their notebooks to keep track of all the cards they've been handing out.. What I'd really love is if they taped the chatter between the officals over the headsets - what exactly were they talking about at the time?GB_Simo wrote:TRI, the referee got the second Swiss goal right.
