Agree with GT and EZ. The new Mellencamp album is surprisingly good, harkening back to his "Scarecrow" and "Lonesome Jubilee" high-flying days of the mid-80s.
But I also skip right past "Our Country." It might be a good song, but the ubiquitous Chevy Truck ad campaign has destroyed that song.
Take care,
PK

No problems here, man. I access it through my Firefox custom search bar, though. I have it set up so I can punch in the album or artist name into the search window, and all of the available options at BTJunkie appear.Spooky wrote:Anyone having trouble with accessing BTJunkie? I have not been able to get to it far a little while now and that always makes me nervous when it is a BT site...
It's funny: Before I discovered BTJunkie, I used a ton of torrent search engines. BTJunkie is so much more comprehensive than every other engine that the others collect dust now.
Take care,
PK

It's rare that I love an album upon first listen, but Lucinda Williams' "West" is superb.
I have a feeling this record is going to be fused to my MP3 player and Winamp player for quite a while.
Take care,
PK

Love Lucinda, and I see that Bill Frisell guests as well. He's one of my favorite players, so I'm anxious to hear that.pk500 wrote:It's rare that I love an album upon first listen, but Lucinda Williams' "West" is superb.

I agree with the sentiment that Norah Jones new CD is a disappointment. "Safe" is a good way to describe it.
I do have a little trouble with Mellencamp and "Our Country." He made such a big deal about not selling out to Madison Avenue a few years back, but now says that it is 'different.' It just turned me off and it is hard for me to get past it and listen to the rest of the music on the CD.

Gotta agree with you pk...I picked it up this morning and it was love at first listen. Definitely a keeper.pk500 wrote:It's rare that I love an album upon first listen, but Lucinda Williams' "West" is superb.

I do a little writing "here and there" for music sites. This was my top 10 for 06 (if anyone cares!):
10. Fiery Furnaces - Bitter Tea:
Yeah, it's a big mess with too many backward vocals. I also believe they hate their fans, but any band that makes their best track the 'hidden' track, is cool with me...
9. Danielson - Ships:
A great placeholder until the next Arcade Fire record. It almost took more listens than it deserved to "get into this one", but once it 'clicks' (and u realize which ones will simply never ever 'click'), it's good-weird-stuff.
8. Girl Talk - Night Ripper:
Fascinating from a creation-standpoint and a legal-standpoint. Dance music for music trivia geeks (like me). $10 says his next album is disaster (esp legally).
7. Morrissey - Ringleaders of the Tormentors:
On the last record, the music actually 'one upped' Moz's lyrics in many ways. This time, the songs do fall into that "typical" Morrissey vibe, yet, Morrissey brought some of his funniest, cutting, and waay revealing lyrics in years.
6. The Thermals - The Body, The Blood, The Machine:
Angry and nerdy, just the way I like it. Gotta thank my friend, Brian, for telling me about these guy 3 years ago. I'm scared to see them live because I fear it might suck.
5. Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit:
What they hell are these guys so damn giddy about? Amazing what finally touring and playing before big crowds will do your "vision". Making people clap and sing is waaay cooler than having fans run onstage with grocery store roses...
4. Tapes 'n Tapes - The Loon:
Def wins the "it just got better and better with every listen award". The drum solo on "Just Drums" guaranteed a top ten spot alone. If you didn't dig this one, please re-read the first sentence.
3. The Pippettes - We are The Pippettes:
Judy, Pull Shapes, Your Kisses... Sure, they are a "manufactured" band of sorts, but so were, uh, other bands. Anyway, the best laugh I had in 2006 was blasting Pull Shapes with the car windows down and the sunroof open while driving through Burbank. So maybe it was a slow year for 'laughs', but not a slow year for cute phil spector-ish british girl pop groups.
2. Band of Horses - Everything All the Time:
The 'whiskey drinking' record of 2006, and the 'long drive' record of 2006. That makes this the most DANGEROUS RECORD of 2006. Don't drink and drive kids, but do one or other with this record, and things will be just dandy. Reverb is your friend.
1. Dappled Cities Fly - Granddance (Australia import only):
Sydney's 'best kept secret' (for now). Find a way to buy this record and keep the receipt. You'll want to be able to prove to your friends that you were hip to Dappled Cities a year before everyone else. Holy Chord, Colour Coding, and Within Hours all make for great late-night listening. You'll probably wish that they would "rock more", but that's when the live show comes-in. If they do their next record with Mitch Easter, lookout folks.
----
Other stuff I've been digging lately:
Arcade Fire - The Neon Bible
Xiu Xiu - The Air Force (very 'out there')
Deerhoof - Friendly Opportunity
10. Fiery Furnaces - Bitter Tea:

LOL DB. Im one i guess but more the real heavy s*** like death metal.
But i also like other types of music, but its metal that gets me going still, im talking Slayer, Cannibal corpse, not guns and roses or disturbed crap like that.
Next week is a good week for metal. Jesu, Rwake, Minsk and Hidden Hand all have new albums out. I'll probably pick up at least a couple of those (I've heard both the Jesu and Minsk and they're outstanding, and the Hidden Hand is good stoner doom boogie, in other words classic Wino) on Tuesday, and wouldn't be surprised if I pick up he others latter on.Jimmydeicide wrote:dbdynsty25 wrote:In 1990.matthewk wrote:Where are all the metalheads on this board!

Metal still keeps me going, although in my old age I've begunu to soften a bit and like some country.

Not sure if you're near NY, but the Pippettes are playing a gig in NY next month as a SXSW warm-up(playing for nights in Austin). I'm hoping they decide to tack on a L.A. gig somewhere.AJColossal wrote:Cool list, I like a lot of that stuff. Really like the Pipettes.
As far as metal? I dug the Mars Volta record, does that count??
How I got Neon Bible? It's a secret, but the record is really cool. It's a bit more 'difficult' than the last one. I'm sure I'll dig it more once I see it live.

When i was searching and needing something heavier way back when, i stumbled across Napalm Death, that was my first encounter with what you say cookie monster vocals, but to me it fit the music , stuff that heavy needed heavier vocals to me , it sounded Evil, more satanic and the realy good singers like Chris Barnes and Glen Benton from Deicide bark it out and you can understand them also.matthewk wrote:Hey, I really like both GnR and DisturbedJimmydeicide wrote:But i also like other types of music, but its metal that gets me going still, im talking Slayer, Cannibal corpse, not guns and roses or disturbed crap like that. The part that has always kept me away from death metal is the cookie monster vocals. I love the riffs and the music, but as soon as the vocals start, I cringe. I can handle bands like Tristania, Pantera, and Testament, but that's about as close as it gets for me.
