I picked up Call of Duty as an "afterthought" when I picked up my 360 pre-order. It was not on my initial list of purchases. After years of playing on the PC, I feared not being able to get used to a controller for a FPS.
I am nearly finished and all I can say is WOW!! Yes, FPS have been done before...especially WWII FPS. However, what COD 2 brings to the table is a sense of immersion that I have never experienced before in ANY video game. I continue to be amazed at the level of activity, the AI, and the endless sounds/chatter that the game has going all at the same time. In particular, I love playing it on the 360 as it runs silky smooth and I don't have to wonder what my frames per second are or if I should be tweaking the settings up or down for better performance.
It took a few missions to get used to the controller, but it is WELL worth the trade off. Playing this bad boy on my 40" Sony HD LCD screen while I sit 8 feet away on my couch is sheer bliss. The controller has become second nature to me, and I think part of that is due to how smooth this game really plays. This is also a reflection of how good the 360 controller really is.
SPOILER BELOW
The whole time I was playing the Point Du Hoc mission, Reagan's speech from 1984 (yes, I am showing my age) kept replaying itself in my head. When I finished that mission and the splash screen started playing the audio from that very speech, I couldn't believe it. One of the COOLEST moment I have ever had playing a video game!

Yeah, it's awesome. I'm loving the single player, about halfway through now (doing the tank stuff in Africa). I went back and did the 1st mission on Veteran difficulty (hardest one) to unlock an achievement. WOW, is it harder like that. Every AI shot is a head shot. If you aren't protected by something, you're dead. After I finish single player on the regular difficulty, I'll be sure to go back and do it all again on Veteran.Toper wrote:Just picked this one up...all I can say is WHOAH...we gotta get 8 people from here online with this one.

As for getting 8 people from here online with this one, well that might be a trick unless we're the only 8 people online in the game. That's the major problem with this title, and hopefully one that they can patch for us. No way for a host to control the room and who's coming or going.

Holy smokes COD2 is unbelievable. I'm in the African desert right now and this game is just flat out impressive. Driving into a village with planes flying around and gunfire everywhere is something special. The visuals are nothing short of cinematic at times. I can't believe all of the things going on. The draw distance is sick, the sound is sick and the action is sick. Its a ton of fun. I can't wait to see what Ghost Recon looks like after playing this game. In COD2 the explosions in the desert are sweet...sand going everywhere. I'm am loving this! I simply can't wait to get to the US part of the game. I'm gonna be sad when its all over though. I've seen games on high end PC's but this game on my 47" HDTV in 1080i is phenominal. Man, what a game!

The missions just get better and better. The Russian campaign was great, the North African campaign was even better, and the American campaign appears to be the best of the lot. I'm playing through on the regular difficulty just to see everything, then I plan on going back and running through all the campaigns again on veteran.
Perfect Dark Zero can't buy its way into my 360 right now.

One word for this game: Immersive..
With all the sounds, screaming, chatter, explosions, on coming Nazi rush, it really feels like you are in this franetic battle. It's like being tossed in to the middle of saving Private Ryan.
I can't say enough about this title. I had started to burn out on FPS, but this game just drew me in and has kept me in. Truly an outstanding game.

Incidentally, for anyone who has already finished the game, I highly, highly recommend going back and trying out some of the missions on veteran difficulty. It takes things to a whole new level, as it's pretty much a one shot and done deal for you, meaning you are absolutely forced to use realistic tactics like firing and ducking behind cover or using plentiful helpings of grenades when you advance.
It's hard as hell, but it's well worth it.

Smoke grenades are like 10 times more valuable in this difficulty level than they are on regular. I lost count of how many times those things saved my butt playing through just one mission.

You know...in thinking more about it, if COD:2 would have just implemented the Halo 2 type party system where 2 or 3 'friends' could just join random games togther, the rest of the online interface (or lack there of) would be more than acceptable.
That is really my only gripe with it. I don't really care about losing control over the game type or map (I really do like the randomness of the current system), I just get bummed that I cannot easily jump into random sessions with specific friends.

Just noticed im not getting centre channel sound on my 360 version when gameplay starts.
Opening movie its there but dissapears in regular game play only get 4.1 anyone else confirm this ? Test it for me as im suspicious of my sound system being correct now.
I run it thru my pc via optical cable and Audigy 2 platinum with the break out box. The Nhl 2k6 game works fine we get commentry thru centre channel tried the wma pro setting in dashboard its the same thing.
Thought my xbox was fine this way but i only noticed by accident when my lad was playing and i was on pc, all the voices were coming outta left and right at the same time seemed weird ,so i had him play longer while i held centre speaker to my ear and nothing.
Help me out as i dont want to get into Cod yet without getting the full experience.
Cheers,
Jimmy.

Good Onion article, especially for those of us who are getting used to dying 5,000 x per level on Veteran
