Watching the Flyers on OLN, all Peter Forsberg on those first two goals...

Anyway, what is up with that 'extreme closeup' camera angle? It is awful. The coverage seems pretty good otherwise thus far, but that camera zoom has to be taken out a bit. I mean there was one point when the flyers where on the PP and the camera was so far zoomed in that the defensemen at the point was the only player on the screen! Absolutely brutal.

15 minutes until the Kings season is under way! SO freakin nervous. My heart is beating like mad. It's been so long since i've had this feeling.

Is that the kiosk impression, based on one period of the first game of an 82-game season?

Seriously, there's a guy with two assists in the first period in a Flyers' uniform tonight who has a much greater claim to the "greatest player in the game" label than Ovechkin.

Yeah, that guy: Peter Forsberg. The best two-way player in the world. The one with the Stanley Cup rings.

Take care,
PK

A free f***in preview of NHL Season Pass and the Hawks game isn't available to watch in Chicago. I'm so f***in pissed right now. At least I have the Sox to watch. Go Hawks!

Yep...thats my kiosk impression!!!
And that OLN coverage sucks...camera wise. Camera angle looks like crap and the game just doesn't look right compared to all the other games tonight. They need to go get their Tour De France equipment...

As far Ovechkin is concerned, I went to the Flyers-Caps preseason game on saturday, and was extremely impressed with Ovechkin. He was the most exciting player on the ice, and everytime he touched the puck you just had that feeling the Caps were going to get a good scoring chance. I for one wouldn't be at all surprised if he has a better rookie season than Crosby. I mean he was better in WJCs last year, why not now?? He's obviously not the best player in the league now, but if the caps get some talent around this guy in a few years, LOOK OUT.

It's going to take PK about 7 years to warm up to him. He's a rookie and hasn't paid his "Forsberg" type of dues yet.

And don't forget the Calder and Art Ross trophies Forsberg has won, too. The dude should be a candidate for the Selke every year, too, but he probably scores too much to be considered as the best defensive forward even though he is among the best.

Deal with what?

I didn't think anyone said he wasn't. Anyhow I am with PK,it's only one freaking game. Wait and see what the kid can do in a full season before you start drinking his DNA like he's related to Doug Flutie.

Datsyuk scored in a minute and a half in! And that's without playing with any of these guys for a year.

Wait to see what this kid can do with the extra room on the ice.

Well, all the talk about NHL games turning into a shooting gallery are a bit premature, if the results of last night's games are any indication.

Scoring seems up a bit, but there weren't any 11-8 results last night. I studied the box scores over Wheat Chex this morning, and nearly every team averaged 25-35 shots per game.

But the game is much more entertaining because of the flow. There were numerous instances in games I watched last night of two-minute even-strength spurts without a whistle and with plenty of nice scoring chances, which was cool.

I don't care if scoring is up as long as legitimate scoring chances due to flowing, fast play are up. That's most important to me.

Lemaire tells PK, "trap this!"

The Wild put 6 on the board against Calgary. They tend to start well, probably due to their coaching, but I'll admit it, I didn't expect them to score their 6th goal until next week.

Turns out Comcast had an error--the free preview started about 30-45 minutes late due to a technical glitch. Looking forward to hockey overload over the next week.

Why? Because he scored twice on opening night as a rookie? Zach Parise of New Jersey scored one goal. Is he now the second-best player in the league?

You guys need to ease off on the pucks Viagra and give this guy a few games before you anoint him as the bastard love child of Jean Beliveau and Howie Morenz.

As a player, fan, and coach of the game of hockey for more than 30 years, the game i saw on the ice last night is going to make for one HELL of a return for this great sport. Will it draw in the casual observer, absolutely not because with the game even faster now due to the open ice the inability for the casual fan to follow the play is increased two fold. But for the hockey fan, we are in for a treat. Watching the forwards and D regroup in the neutral zone and look for the long pass up the center of the ice all but removes any chance for a team to clog up the boards and this alone will make for some awesome scoring chances. Forcing goalies to play the puck ONLY in the area behind the net allows forwards to dump, chase, and set up in ways they couldn't before, and the extra space in the O zone allows for better cycling and thus better scoring opportunities.

I flipped between the Bruins-Habs, Flyers-Rangers, Pens-Devils, and then many of the later games and what i saw was great flow, constant end to end action, and the game played in a style we haven't seen in a long time, and arguably ever. Sure the faster players are going to benefit from this style, but it is also the faster players that will force wings and D to stay honest and thus open up between the blues even more.

Last point, as a passionate Red Sox fan in the midst of a playoff race, i almost found myself wanting to watch the B's more. That says something. God i missed this game.

I saw Overchin (sp) in the world junior tourney and he absoluely dominated the ice when he was on it. He was better then Crosby IMHO because he has all the tools in a great player especially a great shot. Crosby to me seemed slower then Overchin.

Parise always dominated games at UND but he seemed to be on the small side. Fits in well with the midget from Boston College Brian Gionta (walkon to BC).

Marty Reasoner looked like a much better player for the Oilers last night. He had some decent scoring chances but did not put the biscuit in the basket to say.

Another new rule I saw last night that I didn't know about.

If you attempt to pass to a teamate and he does not touch it and the puck goes all the way down, it is not icing. I think the player he's passing to has to be over the red line but it was cool. Really kept the game moving without all those missed passes being blown dead for icing.

PK, I'm going to side with Zlax on this one. He is a superstar. Mark him down for 40+ goals, injuries notwithstanding......and a -25+ as well.

Well Ovechkin is going to earn everybit of that -25 playing on that sub par Capitals team. Ovechkin is however going to do something in his rookie year that Forsberg has NEVER done....put up over 40 goals in a season.

And he'll do it in a league that is optimized for offense and speed, something Forsberg didn't have.

Hey, I agree the kid is special, but I think it's f*cking hilarious that people are calling him the best player in the league after his first game. The ultimate knee-jerk kiosk impression.

Wow, the guy has played one game and you're already comparing him to Peter Forsberg...
Nobody is saying that Ovechkin will flop, he's going to be a damn good player, but are all of these accolades neccesary after just one game?
