LOL... and of course, if I posted that information everyone would be screaming for a source. So... source please? And more importantly, can we have sales through September 2004?
Can BigBertha EA come and post some numbers? That would even the credibility out a bit for impartial sources...
bdoughty wrote:Exactly, plus you have the thrashing that EA's NHL is taking from ESPN NHL. But once again trying to prove Kaz wrong is pointless.
But that's all you're trying to do so why stop there? I tried to ignore it but you are basically just trolling me lately with comments like these (maybe because Parker isn't posting much?). If I see a comment of yours that I think is discussion worthy, I try to stick to what you say and not focus too much on the author. I certainly don't say your name, yet my name has been coming out of your mouth a lot. I rarely reply to your posts, yet as sure as the sun sets I can count on you being attached to one of mine. I'm going to have to insist that you ignore my posts for a few days... then we'll start anew, and hopefully it will be less personal... and that goes for both of us.

I posted similar numbers from the NDP. Do a search for September NPD (around mid October). I think the Madden #'s were higher but not much. You can't get any more credible then NPD.
If it requires me to not reply to your posts and or inacuracies so be it. Kind of sad you just can't say you were wrong. Oh well I will stick you on Ignore and just keep you there.

I am just one person, but I used to buy all the EA sports games at release. The last few years it came down to a review comparison between Sega and EA. This year it changed. Because of quality and price, the choice between Sega and EA was a blowout in favor of Sega.
I still have the Sega/ESPN football, hockey and baseball games in my rotation and soon college BB will be in the mix. I kept NCAA football, but EA is without competition in that sport. Unless a game is notably better, I won't buy EA. To me, it is a no brainer. Sega/ESPN games look better, they sound better and for the most part they play better. Unlike EA, the games actually use the power of the Xbox. And they cost less than 20 bucks.
I don't even buy the PC versions anymore. EA has become lazy. They develop for the PS2 and port everywhere else. There is no compelling reason to get the PC versions of games that are mediocre on the PS2 and offer nothing more than better graphics on the PC.
Who needs a new console? I would like several more years of 19.99 sports games on the Xbox.
Yeah, the numbers are from the Oct. NPD TRST. I rounded off for simplicity. Also, the PS1, GBA, GBC, whatever else versions are not included.
I'm not sure what the numbers were through Sept of last year, but in any case ESPN has sold over 4X what they sold last year in only 2 months this year. And I think it's safe to say that Madden won't be selling another 2 million copies.
The net effect of this will be that Sega of America/VC will live to fight another day, and that EA in the future will not be able to make as many non-blockbuster games, since Madden essentially covers the losses for all those games.
wouldn't it be smarter to have a sale price upon release (for like 2 weeks)then jack it back up for a few months .....then do a final price drop. that way i don't feel so burnt for buying madden at full price,

I'm sure we'll at least be back up to $39.99 when the new consoles hit, if not $49.99. So that probably means one more year of football at 19.99.
The numbers FatPitcher posted look correct to the best of my recollection. Sega seriously closed the gap in terms of units, although obviously EA owns the gross sale amount. I wish there was a way to find out who bought both games.
Either way, EA has to be a little nervous. Those sales of Sega titles are doing a lot to build brand awareness and market penetration now. If this really is a battle for the casual gamer, EA should be even more worried, because ESPN NFL is much more impressive out of the box in terms of presentation and graphics (at least on the XBox).
BTW, Kaz, we were all more likely to agree with you when Aria was talking instead of Nellie the Angry Drunken Dwarf. Seriously, he looks like an extra from an old Bowery Boys movie.

Actually it's exactly the opposite. We argue with him more since we get more responses, which means more Aria. If we agreed, the discussion would be over. That's not what we want.

Now I'm really confused!
Incidentally, the picture is from a couple of years ago when Nellie and Little Nellie (Donn Nelson, his son and Mavs GM) got fined and suspended for illegal offdoings during overseas scouting. Since they couldn't be in the building for the season opener, Nellie and son put on a couple of jail outfits and hung out at a local bar to watch the game (along with then rookie Adam Harrington). During the game they would flash during timeouts to Nellie downing cold ones left and right. Of course, most Mav fans didn't even blink since Nellie is known to do post game interviews while guzzling beer...

What was the name of that ass hole at EA who said a month ago that Sega was throwing in the white towel by releasing an inferior product and pricing it at $19.99? Sure is nice to see him eating crow right now.

In a perfect world where loyal customers are treated special, yes it would be great. In the real world it would be the worst possible thing for publisher to do. It would be like throwing away money. The first few weeks are when most diehard fans of a game are going to purchase it, no matter the price.
I realize that prices will jack back up when the new consoles arrive, I am just enjoying the low prices while we have them.
Speaking of new consoles, what possible reason will a sports gamer have to get the new Xbox2 when it comes out late next year? I doubt that EA will have anything ready for it - and all of the big sports games will have already been released for the old consoles. There is no way that system seller like Halo 3 will be available. So why get the new console? I will most likely do what i usually do and wait until at least a few 'must haves' are available and then get one of the consoles.
Do you think that we will have to put up with the usually garbage - meaning first generation sports games won't have career modes, etc???
I wouldn't be so quick to presume that EA won't have anything in place for Xbox 2 (Next, whatever).
Now that the partnership is in place, you can bet Microsoft is begging EA for launch support. In fact, I would be surprised if it wasn't part of the XBL deal: We'll scrap MSN sports and make you the premiere partner for sports games on XBL, including priority launch with XB2 and a say in the development of XBL for the next generation...
Either way, it's in the developer's best interest to build a consumer base on new consoles early, and to migrate as many customers as possible to new hardware so that they can focus development efforts.
I would expect to see a graphically enhanced, but ultimately crippled, version of Madden available for XB2 launch only a few months after Madden 2006 for the current generation. Madden Next?

That's a possible scenario, that they put out a higher-resolution version of Madden and their other sports games. The same engine is used for the PC version and with a good enough rig, you can exceed 720p resolution.
They may treat Xenon launch like they're treating the PSP and DS launches, which is to get games out there but necessarily building something new from scratch, as was the case with the first version of Madden for the PS2 and for the Genesis. These were based on new engines and significantly different from all previous versions of Madden on existing platforms.
EA may again be accused of having favortism for Sony, if they debut their new engine for the PS3, rather than Xbox 2.
However, you figure VC will do something special, if not for the launch of Xbox2, then a few months after launch.
One way or the other, it worked on me. I traded in SW:B and ESPN Baseball and paid a grand total of $7.35 for NBA Live. I was pretty underwhelmed at first, but after playing a few games I can see some of the game's strengths, most notably the way fouls are called regularly and believably. I was hoping for something on par with Madden, which Live definitely is not, but it's a fun game.
