The QB will now plant his foot and be ready to throw in rhthym to his primary receiver. This has been one of the things I've loved about ESPN, and it's great to see it make its way over to Madden. The animation isn't as good as ESPN's, but it does the trick and makes throwing outs, hooks and slants a lot more instinctive.
This hasn't been getting mentioned because madden/ncaa had this last year. The bad part about this feature, tho, is that if you don't control your qb in time, the cpu will pass for you (doh!)!

Really? I didn't notice it at all. NCAA will set up your quarterback off play action and then proceed to ignore your button press and throw to the primary receiver- but I haven't seen it or Madden do this properly for normal pass plays. (You can argue that Madden still doesn't do it properly, as half the time the quarterback faces the wrong way after a drop and has to do a magic spin to get in position, but regardless the feature actually works.)

Teams that run the 3-3-5 have it in ESPN. Chargers basically have it. In fact they have no deffensive fronts with 4 down linemen, with the exception of the bear front.

One other advantage to ESPN, which is solely preference is the abiltiy to choose your personel set before you choose formation and play. In all my time playing, and coaching, personel was always the first thing defined before the coach sent in the play. Might not be as important to everyone, but when I am thinking of setting up plays or a series of plays, personel sets are a primary concern.

Though I enjoy both ESPN NFL 2K5 and Madden 2005, I'll probably be playing Madden from here on out.

There are a few things I disliked about ESPN.

1. Dropped passes. I can understand that receivers drop passes, but it is the way ESPN does it that turns me off. There's no way that a pro player is going to drop five passes in one game, when the ball is right in his hands. This happens too often in ESPN, while with Madden it is much less frequent.

2. Too many interceptions. I can't say I've played ESPN enough to make a clear judgment on this.

3. For comparison, Madden's defensive play allows a lot more pre-play adjustments.

4. Playbooks. Madden wins here.

5. Feel. The more I play Madden the more it feels like football. That never happened with ESPN. Good game with a decent feel, but it never got any better.

6. Franchise and online. ESPN's online is still pretty rocky; EA's is sollid.

7. Not much in ESPN for drills and stuff.

Both games are excellent. But I'm playing Madden now.

4. Playbooks. Madden wins here.
My only question is how do you figure on that one?

I think you're the only person who thinks that. Madden has always been a step behind ESPN in terms of playbooks.

I guess I'm looking at the Browns' playbook. There's not much for variety in ESPN, offensively or defensively.

I know many feel the opposite about the playbooks, but I prefer Madden's.

Here's one thing with the ESPN playbooks that frustrates me:

As the Colts, I can only find a couple two-TE formations (but they both have the same plays, just vary where the TEs lineup), which is a hallmark of the Tom Moore's Colts offense.

Not sure if Madden has more or not, but it is something bothering me so far with ESPN. At least I can be somewhat competent on offense with the Colts, something I have never done well in Madden for some reason (last year, way too much playaction, leading to too many sacks).

Now Madden is starting to scare me a bit. The two things I love to do most on offense are run and audible. Sounds like Madden is a bit clunkier than ESPN on both.

Hopefully my local video store will get Madden soon so I can try it ...

Take care,

Both games have the latest trends like trips and bunch formations. They both have a lot of plays which don't make sense. Receivers ending up too close to each other, running into each other in their patterns, etc.

I prefer Madden playbooks for a couple of reasons. There are more hot routes available and there is also the new formation shifts which give the plays new looks at the line of scrimmage.

But the biggest reason is that online, ESPN only lets you use the playbook of the team you select. Last year, they let you use any but there was a divergence error bug when people tried to select custom playbooks for online games. So their solution was to remove the ability to select any other playbook than the one belonging to the team you choose.

I guess that's not a problem if the team playbooks really reflect the real life team. But still feels limiting.

Excellent review by TCrouch. I don't share all his thoughts on Madden, but a nicely done review. Kudos.

I didn't have this problem at all. I am using NE, maybe Brady is really good or something. I do notice that Bullet Passes do drop more often, but if they are open, they will catch it. My WRs almost never drop high slow balls (but they are usually tipped). I don't think it is NE's WRs either b/c I lost Troy Brown, David Patten AND Deion Branch over the course of the season to injuries (oh yah, I lost Corey Dillon too) so I was passing on every down and still complete over 50% of my pass. I guess it might be a timing thing, I don't know.

Alan_Bernardo wrote:2. Too many interceptions. I can't say I've played ESPN enough to make a clear judgment on this.
If you throw in double/triple coverage, they do get INTs alot. Or if the opposing team has awesome secondaries (like Carmen Electra's Shocks). Sometimes, I throw 5 INTs with Brady, other times, I throw none. It is weird, but I do feel that most of the INTs are my fault.

I have yet to play Madden, but I do want to try it just to see which one I like more (I have liked Sega's game ever since NFL 2K).

I only have a few games under my belt, so I was really scared when my Colts got a case of the drops...started having flashbacks to NCAA! Reggie Wayne makes his cut and slants to the middle of the field without a DB within five steps...doink. Dallas Clark cutting over the middle, no linebackers or safeties around...doink.

The rest of the game was fine though, Harrison broke loose for me in single coverage and caught the ball. Other times, the WR would drop the ball when I tried to decapitate them with a late throw.

My biggest problem on offense right now is trying to get the first down when it is 3rd and short.

WOW Terry! And EXTREMELY in depth and thoughtful review. Great job. Makes me want to give Madden a lot more play time to understand the nuances. Thanks!

I'm loving this game. Unless there are some huge unknown bugs/money plays this is the best Madden ever by far. Last year I barely kept it for a full rental period. What a difference a year makes. It takes a few games to get used to the sub-par graphics and presentation, but the gameplay is great. I had to remember not to touch the speed burst as much until I hit the open field when running. That alone increased my average.

The CPU just ran 34 times and passed 24 in my preseason game. They ran a nice bootleg at the 8 yard line that totally faked me out for the TD. The CPU offenses in general have played very realistically and team specific. They throw deep, in the flats, to the TEs, slants, etc.

My stats are dead on with hardly any slider adjustments. I love the accelerated clock. I can't ever say enough about the in-game save. I'd pay an extra $10 just to have that in every game :P

Sold that P.O.S. NCAA today on Half.com and I won't miss it at all. Madden and ESPN will keep me entertained.

Leebo, what difficulty and quarter length are you using? I skipped last year's Madden so this whole accelerated play clock thing is new to me.

FWIW, I'm using 13 mins accelerated clock on All-Madden defaults. Penalties turned all the way up, subs at 80-85.

I'll really have some time on my hands next week when I travel to Chicago for work. I even bought an RF adapter for the TV at the hotel.

I'm also still playing ESPN as I can't shake how beautiful the game looks in comparison to Madden. I know it's said over and over, but the game just reeks of a real NFL game when playing. Hands down the best presentation of ANY sports game, period. BUT, Madden's franchise is like ESPN's presentation and I can't get over how ugly the franchise is in ESPN. Will we ever win?

I am using 13 minutes with an accelerated clock just ike Mizzou.

I started out on default All-Pro with running sliders up 5 for both CPU and human and break block and tackle down 5. Now that I am learning the game I have moved closer to default. Passing seems a bit too easy on All-Pro when I use a good QB, but my stats are very believable with Tommy Maddox.

Once I master all the defensive adjustments I'm sure I will have to make it more challenging or move to All-Madden, but for now I am OK.

LOL. I remember some posts at SR that discussed this. The TVs at the hotels had some plastic thingy on them that would not allow you to get at the coax cable to unscrew it to hook up your own cable. One of the guys at SR said he wore down his toenail clippers cutting that thing off. Funny thread.

So, bring some other equipment with you. You may need to do some work to get that protector off the tv in the hotel room.

LOL. That was me that started that thread. I took my GC with me on the road the week Metroid Prime was released. Much to my dismay the inputs were all blocked. Some of the recommendations were pretty funny. One person suggested that I go buy a TV for the week and then return it before I left!

I pretty much gave up on taking anything but a GBA on the road. I just catch up on my reading and watch more soft core porn. Or maybe I kill two birds with one stone and just read soft core porn

I could really use a printable cheat sheet for the Madden controls, like someone posted for ESPN way back when. The defensive adjustments in Madden are stretching my lizard brain to its limits.

A few years ago I had to go to San Diego for a week for my company's convention. It was at the end of February, the temp never got above 63 and it rained the whole week. Well, luckily I brought my Dreamcast with me. They had one of those plastic things on the cable. I went out, bought a pair of scissors, and after 15 minutes was able to cut that thing off.

On my current job, I don't travel. But if I do, I'll remember to bring my scissors!

Funny stuff. I don't stay at those cheapo hotels who have to sodder on the connector to the TV. :D

I'll have to call the Doubletree hotel and see.... maybe bring some coax connectors!
