First, thanks again to Bill for the code. Very much appreciated.Pete1210 wrote:Thanks for the code. Its the same COD multiplayer. Had some fun in a party with some friends, won a few and got crushed - spawn, die, repeat. The shotgun is ridiculous.
I've mostly liked the COD campaigns, so I always buy it, play some mp till I finish the campaign, then dump it.
Second, Pete nailed it with his description. This is Call of Duty, returning to its WWII roots. Nothing more, for better or worse. I sense nothing innovative, very little new. Activision is banking on a change of scenery reviving this increasingly stale franchise, but I don't think it's enough.
Spawn. Run. Shoot. Die. Rinse, wash, repeat. That's it. I get no sense of being part of a bigger battle or struggle, no sense of an operation or campaign, even in the War mode. This game, like all COD's except for the first Modern Warfare, feels like Halo or Doom in a military setting. Fast, frenetic, tight maps with certain funnel points guaranteed to create carnage.
I know this is only a beta. I know people love this style of gameplay. And I know the Battlefield franchise offers much of the same and isn't this startling tactical and strategic contrast to COD.
But Battlefield's advantage over COD -- in my mind, at least -- always has been that it feels big. It feels sweeping. It feels epic. For example, you really feel the ebb and flow of a big battle or campaign in the Operations mode of BF1. Love it. I encountered nothing like that in this beta.
Safe to say, I'm not racing out to buy this game on release day for me. But my 12-year-old son loves it, and he is a killing machine. This game is suited to pubescent reflexes and desires, which are far from mine!
One more gripe: I've never liked the color palette Treyarch and Infinity Ward have used in this series. Everything is so bright, so crisp, with far too much contrast. There are no subtle shades of color. Every map feels like it's being baked in the same New Mexico sunshine where Walter White and Jesse Pinkman cooked meth in their RV.
Thanks again, Bill. I don't want these mixed reactions to diminish my gratitude for the code.
