I'll believe that at the end of the day tomorrow.
I made it! Still don't have it!
Reading Zeppo's impressions make it harder, but I know every time I pick up a game to play with DSP guys, I get one session out of it, tops. That stays my hand.
Bravo, Terry! If I had more gaming time I would likely pick this up but it is limited so I don't think I would ever learn it well enough. The beta was interesting but my fears of falling way behind the curve are large. Plus it sounds like they have plans of releasing a ton of dlc that would further segregate me from the crowd.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.
I didn't mind playing as a medic and as zeppo posted above, if you're NOT communicating then you pretty much lost half of the battle. Being on the west coast, even though we may have five guys with the game it would be hard to get everyone involved at once. Also I hear there's bunch of DLC that will end up costing you more than $60 ($70 in this neck of the woods ) and playing as a monster was interesting. If you don't mind playing with randoms, I find some original value here but longevity might be an issue.
If I got it, I'd lean toward PC anyway. I came close to breaking yesterday when I was looking for something to do and Steam had it plastered all over...but then I got the notice that new Nvidia drivers had released, which made AC Unity playable at awesome framerates with everything cranked up. So I did that instead.

Don't want to derail this thread but I have a small group and we're multiplayer gaming every Monday night at 8pm CT. We use this site to figure out what everyone has and we pick a game.
Played this for about 2 hours last night and was really able to get a better sense of the overall game...and I think it's absolutely fantastic!!!
Got in with a small group where there was a bot or two filling in most of the time but it still proved to be quite fun. For some, I keep hearing about how the "hunt" portion can be boring, which is fair but I am not feeling that way at all. Last nights rounds were a testament to that as the player who controlled the monster for most of the rounds was really good. So there was quite a lot of searching and downtime. But for me - I seem to have the opposite reaction to this aspect as most - where I feel it slightly intensifies the moments when you actually do encounter the monster.
It felt like there was a lot of us hunters running around in circles with the monster just toying with us and striking us at will. To me, just seemed like we needed to get better at hunting rather than complaining that it was boring and I appreciated the challenge.
After the rounds were over I decided to mess around with the private match options and settings just to see what was available. This is where I got an even greater appreciation for the game. There are just a TON of cool things that you can set up for the session. From game modes, to special perks for the actual map, to balancing options, etc... Made me REALLY bummed that there aren't just a few more DSP'ers willing to give this a go. The thing is that we could EASILY set up some fun matches with lots of diversity for as little as 2-3 people with AI filling in the rest. Similar to L4D. The AI monster is actually quite challenging!!! I was envisioning 3 of us playing as hunters with the last hunter being an AI bot (which anyone can switch to at any time if needed) and going against an AI monster. With all the different maps, game modes and settings/options it would be a freaking blast and wouldn't require a large DSP turnout at all.
And while communication is pretty important - even a minimal amount with semi-decent randoms proved to be effective and make the game feel cohesive.
TCrouch wrote:I could easily pick it up if there are people willing to play it. I just haven't seen that happen in a long time.
yeah - I agree. It's a pretty unrealistic expectation. And even if we do get a 3-4 people to play, we all know that it will get played at best 3-4 times and then drop off the face of the planet for the next big game. or maybe not...?!?! I know that the last Splinter Cell seemed to have more legs around here and the reason that got killed off was because the next-gen systems came out a month or two after that game was released.
The other thing that gives this game more of a fighting chance is that we don't need a full room to play. So if we have 4-5 people scheduled but only 2-3 turn out, it's still very playable. Where as most other games just don't work unless the room is full.
Played a few more hours yesterday. My feelings towards it got even better. Loving this one.
Right now I'd say 75% of the random sessions I join are guys communicating and playing seriously. That's pretty good odds. Lots of banter during matches about how the great the game is and the bad user reviews are really surprising.
Totally understood. I am usually of the same mindset but I was such a fan of the L4D games and a sucker for this kind of asymmetrical MP that I was getting this one no matter what.
Hopefully we might be able to play this one down the road a bit if it gets cheap fast...
For the record, I am really bummed about their DLC structure and hate supporting a game that is practicing those types of cash grabs, but what is in the initial release as is, is definitely worth $60 to me.
Did you guys really hate the Beta so much that you're not gonna consider getting this? I am having such a blast with this even with randoms. It would be so freaking great to get even a couple weeks play of this with a DSP room. Hell, even 2-3 of us on a team would be awesome.
Finally was brave enough to play as the monster last night. Got the hang of it pretty quick actually. Got absolutely crushed for a few matches then was able to won one by destroying the power plant.
Yeah I was so "meh" about the whole thing that I've got no interest other than with people I know. I'm surprised there isn't more interest in this, as it wouldn't take much to want to play it with DSP guys. But that just never works anymore.
At the same time, I'll pay full price for a short single player game. Single player gaming is not dead to me. If a game is almost all-online, I've got almost no interest in it.

You guys are my beta.
I'm waiting to see how this shakes out. It released while I was in the unshakable throws of Dragon Age, so I knew I wouldn't play it.
Finished DA, so I'm intrigued, but I was sort of waiting to see if there was any consensus reached among you guys first. Seems like there hasn't been, though.
