Not to mention that there's no way I would trust all-digital game purchases without being able to easily employ a physical backup device. Given the track record of the last couple generations of consoles, I don't want to have to download everything all over again when my machine eats it for the third time. I had several gigs of Rock Band content to download again when I upgraded to an Elite and that process was a royal pain in the ass.
And as Danimal alludes, I could probably get a physical game from Amazon via Super Saver Shipping in the time it would take to download Uncharted 3 via PSN.
I think a quality digital distribution setup would be really nice. A fast network and a sizable detachable hard drive solves many issues. People love Steam on PC, I hold out hope that XBL could create the same thing.

Steam is my favourite gaming 'platform' - automatic updates, cloud saves, great sales, and an amazing catalogue of both mainstream and indie titles. I would be over the moon if Microsoft could create something as good as Steam for the next Xbox.

Remove the 'probably'.

It's funny that steam gets the praise now as only a few short years ago when a company announced their game is launching on steam you could hear the collective groan amongst the gamers. I guess all of the crappy alternatives have proven the advantages of a good system.
The negative reaction from gamers over a console that does not play used games would be immense. It would also quite possibly lead to a war with Gamestop, who makes a large amount of its money on sales of used games. I really think the rumor that MS will release a new console that cannot play used games holds no merit. That decision would be disastrous for MS's console and surely MS is not that stupid.
As for physical media versus digital downloading of games, that is entirely dependent on upgrades to infrastructure. A huge proportion of people in the USA do not have really high speed service. Hell, all I can get where I live is crap DSL with fairly slow speed, and I don't live in remote area. People are not going to be too keen on buying games that take all night to download, not to mention the file sizes are only going to get larger as games become more complex. I think we will see a choice between digital downloads and physical media for at least the next generation of consoles, and possibly the one after that. This country has been s*** when it comes to upgrading infrastructure.

Word.
Has sony announced yet that psn was just a joke and that they will actually have a real online set up for the PS4?

The Wall Street Journal has added more rumors to the mix, citing its always helpful "people familiar with the matter" who claim that not only will Sony debut its next gen console at the event, but that it will be released later this year. Additionally, it claims that Sony will integrate more social features into the console this time around (Home 2.0 anyone?), as well as changes in "how users interact with the machine."

Agreed.....main reason I do not own a PS3 even though I have purchased and returned 3 of them.....
$ony is living in the past where they think people will buy any bullshit they feed them just cause they are $ony.
With a few fanboy exceptions aside ( remember how some clowns told is it was good that our personal info was hacked? ) the world doesnt work like that anymore.
Oh and how about a new controller that fits into a mans hands. With analog triggers for those of us who play racing games. Listen to us or burn yet again. Its put up or shut the f*** up.
