I understand JRod but I only posted those videos because they showcased what is possible with the creation tools in the beta and 1up mentioned that gamers would be surprised at how many tools and items were not included in the beta.JRod wrote:Those two videos have nothing to do with gameplay. I'm skeptical, ya ya, not because of the game but because the editing that's possible seems to do less with gameplay and more for the sake of creating something.
Maybe LBP will break the mode but games focused so heavily on user created content, leave a lot to be desired in the gameplay department.
We'll see...
The game looks fantastic though.
As far as gameplay is concerned, it's very good. It's a platformer with realistic physics. Meaning jumps will be a little floaty compared to other platformers but it also means that there are a lot of possibilities in level design.
I've already run through some levels where someone had recreated one of those crane mechanisms you see where you try and grab a stuffed animal. In this case there were three levers that controlled it and you had to pick up 4 blocks to continue through the level. With one person it was a challenge because you had to be fast, with three people it was a challenge because you had to work as a team.
Another level I played had my daughter and I riding in a tank-like vehicle complete with canon on top. The canon could move up and down and there was a button to shoot. It was ideal for at least 3 players but was manageable with the two of us. One lever controlled whether the vehicle was moving forwards or backwards, one lever controlled the canon moving up or down, and the last lever controlled when the canon fired.
There are levels that are races where a gate won't open until all players are standing at it. Once it opens it's a race to the finish and the winner usually gets more points and better prizes. Sometimes people add vehicles to the races. As more people get this game I have no doubt that we'll be seeing some very impressive and fun levels.
Part of the fun is searching for that really great level. As you start a new level you keep thinking "Is this the one?" There's some stinkers out there for sure but you can usually tell which ones those are based upon the descriptors people chose for the level. Even if you find a stinker the charm of the game is enough to keep you having fun. If you're with someone else just put on a mean face and slap them. Slapping a sackboy never gets old (that sounds dirty doesn't it?)
The only thing that can be problematic is moving between the 3 different perspectives of the level. It's nothing that's a game killer but something they could refine for the final version or perhaps in a patch.
I know I'm gushing over this game but I really didn't think it would be nearly this good. I had my eye on it as it had piqued my interest but actually getting some heavy time with it has made me think this game should definitely be game of the year and will likely be looked at as a defining moment in gaming.
