I would have thanked her for the chicken, taken it from her and fed myself as we chatted. As just about any other 21-year-old would do.

Then maybe momma could change my diapers when I was done so I could make her feel like herself.

34, do you read a paper or look at sports blogs and Web sites? For a guy who is so critical of the sports media, it's almost hypocritical if you do.

No, f*ck you, I want to argue more. :) After all, I'm just a 42-year-old kid, and I need protection from big, bad bulletin board bullies like you. :)

You cock. :) :) :)

100000% agree. Well, except it wasn't a very small part. It was a big part of me that loved seeing a "columnist" get taken to task for what was pure speculatory bull****.

I kinda like a coach who sticks up for his kids...
So, is Coach going to stick up for this "kid" the first time his boss tells him that he's doing a lousy job once he enters the "real world" after OSU?

That's my point: This is not a 17-year-old high school kid. This is an ADULT who has been pampered as a star athlete for four years at OSU. And he needs a 40-year-old man to fight his battles for him?

Lame.

Where's the safety net going to be in two years, when this 21-year-old "kid" suddenly is thrust into the world of a 23-year-old "man?"

We have 18-year-old men dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, yet this 21-year-old "kid" football player needs protection from the big, bad wolf of the local sports media? Pathetic.

Take care,
PK
I understand all that...I am just not willing to give ever hack reporter a free pass. Sorry.
You and me either. Writers/journalists stick together why not coaches and players. I like the fact that he went off, hell it could have really gotten ugly and the language harsh. I'm pretty sure that wasn't the first thing she wrote to tweak his nerves.

There are two sets of rules for bashing pro's vs college athletes. She did rip the kid pretty hard. Whatever, goal accomplished - she's got her name out across the country now & he got his. Maybe she'll be the next greta van susteren... Maybe he'll be the next denny green....

As a fan of OSU and growing up in the sooner state. Sad to say it, but our program needed some attention,(positive or negative) especially after that "woodshedding" by Troy.

OU gets all the attention, all the accolades, all the recruits, and we get whats leftover. We haven't been a national player since Jimmy Johnson left, about time the Cowboys have resurfaced from their secada-esque slumber. Its really good to see the Orange and Black on the national scene again. Hooray for Mike Gundy, and go Pokes. :D

Jason Whitlock breaks down her "column". He makes some great points, esp about making claims with no sources listed whatsoever unless u count 'back stories told on the sly' as a source...

BTW, Carlson is now hitting the talk show circuit - lookout.

Whitlock, whom I'm no big fan of, did a good job pointing out the failings of her piece. The "you can almost see" section was a big red light to me - either she saw him or didn't, and trying to infer attitude or demeanor from an entirely innocuous quote is inexcusable.

The chicken thing? She tries to make it seem like he was a baby bird and momma was regurgitating in his open mouth. Of course, mom could have just been handing him a bite of chicken which he playfully grabbed with his mouth.

But the thing that bothered me most was her insinuations about his injuries. She has nothing beyond her opinion and she just runs with it. His one major injury she concedes, but she tears into him for not "gutting it out" even though she has absolutely no idea what the injuries were or how they affected his ability to play.

All of this doesn't excuse coach Gundy's tirade. It was unprofessional (if amusing), and though it was the correct forum to address a public attack on his program he did so rather poorly.

She has the right as a "columnist" to write what she pleases, but she and her paper should be ashamed of publishing what amounts to an ad hominem piece full of insinuations and anecdotal hearsay. But heck, now I've read her piece and clicked on her paper's website which I wouldn't have ever done without this hack job, so I guess for them it's mission accomplished!

Having me in your corner is nowhere near as cool as I'd like to think. I usually have the Pigpen dark cloud effect.

Actually I just hate modern day sports writers almost as an entire group. And this woman's column is exhibit A as to why. Sources? Pbbth who needs that? Just make s*** up and say it was "rumors" or unnamed sources. There is ZERO accountability in that industry.

She's just lucky that Ozzie Guillen wasn't the coach.

I have no problem with this at all. A coach has every right to rip into a journalist just like the journalist had every right to write her story. I personally wouldn't have written a story like that and think she's a b*tch for doing it but she has every right to write it. Besides, this is the best thing that's ever happened to this journalist. She's been on a morning talk show and I'm sure the rag she writes for got a nice little boost in sales.

I think if he had ripped her points I would have been more impressed. Or if he had pulled out a Bobby Knight "bury me upside down so they can kiss my ass" zinger. Instead he just seemed incoherent.

I find it hard to believe that a college athlete is expected to be able to handle having large, fast, sweaty men trying to rip his head off, but not a mean ol' sports columnist. This isn't someone at some small D-II program, it's someone in our semi-pro D-I college football system. She may very well have written a crap column, but this looks more like a coach trying to use his position to bully reporters from writing negative stuff about his team.

Consider this: if a reporter had written a puff piece about an athlete, saying how wonderful he is, and in reality the guy is a scumbag, is coach going to go off about how she got it wrong and he's really not a good person? No. The athletic system uses the sports media as much if not more than the sports media uses them. It's always true until they say something bad about you, then all of a sudden they're all a bunch of hacks and liars.
