What's an impulse buy? :)

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I've made an impulse buy on anything. OK, to be fair, I walked to the Post Office to mail stuff during lunch today and picked up a prescription at the drug store, and I bought a Tootsie Pop on impulse for a nickel for the walk home up the hill.
I hope you cleaned that nickel off after you squeezed it out :P
Found it on the sidewalk while walking to the Post Office. Just kidding! :)

Take care,

It wouldn't surprise me to just see them add the 20gb to the Core and the 100gb to the Premium and not change prices, either.
Nothing is easier to promote and sell than a price cut. You can explain to the gaming community that they're getting better technology for the same price, but that doesn't mean sh*t to the non-gamer.

If MS wants to take a bite into the non-gamer market, then nothing says "Welcome aboard!" like a price cut.

I'm a longtime gamer, but I've been a miserly bastard for even longer, so a $399 Premium with a 100 GB hard drive would be less attractive to me than a $299 Premium with a 20 GB hard drive. Price talks loudest with me.

Take care,

PK I'm in the same camp that says the first price drop will be $50 for both Premium and Core. I also think late next year MS might introduce a new model with a 100 gig HDD and HD-DVD player for $449.

One of the big three did some number crunching and it may have been Sony. They claimed that every $50 price drop equaled so many million units sold. It's been awhile so I forget the actual number.

With Sony losing $300 bucks on every system it will be sometime before they drop their price.

Main Street Pharmacy, 11 E. Main St., Marcellus, N.Y.

Fireballs, Tootsie Pops and pieces of Bazooka are a nickel apiece. I can go in there with a quarter and make my kids feel like it's f*cking Halloween. :)

Jamie, the owner, is a good cat. He's a hard-working young guy and has provided this community with something it needed after the previous owner, who could be a real prick, closed the store.

I agree but I doubt they will do this. If they did, then you would be forcing consumers to pay for the drive just for movies(as games will never use this on the 360) OR you could let devs use it for games but then you have what would appear to be multiple consoles.
Or they could have special edition games on HD-DVD.

But that would alienate people who might have bought launch units based on their claims that DVD had plenty of capacity for games, because they'd use more compression and procedural rendering and so on.

Hey if they were going to put in HD-DVD, why not a new CPU and GPU too?

Well, because I just got a HD-DVD player I doubt MS would go that route (although never say never) but a bigger HD and a built in HDMI are a must in their next reincarnation of the 360.

Interesting follow-up story to NextGen's report yesterday about Robbie Bach's comments regarding an Xbox 360 price drop:

http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?optio ... 6&Itemid=2

This story offers industry analysis of whether and when MS will drop the Xbox 360 price or offer other enhancements.

Good reading.

Good read indeed. Seems like MS has a nmumber of ways it can approach a potential price cut or improved product offering. I do agree that any price cut before Sony acts could be perceived as the 360 no longer being a "premium" product. This should be interesting to watch these companies maneuver...

Certainly MS has to be worried about it. Decisions they make now can really help or screw up their quest to win the console wars this round.

PK : I was in the same boat as you holding off on xbox360. I sold my xbox on ebay for a little over 150 and got the microcenter rebate deal for 100 so it was easy to convice the wife that the console would ultimately cost me around 150 bucks after rebates/paypal.

If you have Xbox, sell it off on ebay with all your accessories and games. At the least you'll get 150 off it.

Why am I telling you this? Because I've had Xbox360 now for not even a week, and it is absolutely awesome. If you liked Xbox Live on Xbox, Xbox Live on 360 is like XboxLive on Steroids. Also, my random games with opponents thus far has been pretty good. Not much cheese as in the older consoles.

Even with a standard tv with component hookup, the games look terrific. If you have a HDTV, you'll be in heaven.

Well, thats just it. They don't have to make any moves at this point in time. However, when they do make a move, they need to get it right. If you are to believe Robbie Bach, MS is not in this to "win" the console war from a number of units sold standpoint, they are targetting profitability first. I honestly don't think they can beat Sony in the number of units sold in the long run with Sony's brand loyalty they achieved with PS1/PS2. But I do expect the installed bases of units to be much closer this generation. If MS can stay within reach of PS3 in number of units sold and maintain profitability, LOOK OUT.

Inu:

I sold my Xbox and accessories a month ago on eBay and earned $130. I rolled that, plus some extra proceeds from the prior sale of my Xbox games, into a Nintendo DS Lite and two games.

I haven't regretted it one bit. The DS Lite is a riot for what I want out of gaming now. Quick bursts of fun gameplay, with no worries about graphics, the latest rosters, AI flaws, physics engines, etc. Plus I'm introducing gaming lightly to my kids with the DS Lite, which is fun.

The Microcenter deal won't work for me. The nearest Microcenter to Syracuse is five hours away.

No question I miss gaming with the DSP boys, and I plan to return at some point with an Xbox 360. Hopefully sooner than later, but I'm willing to wait awhile now that Robbie Bach is talking possible price break. My resistance will weaken in the spring when Colin McRae: Dirt and GTR 2 are released, no doubt. :)

I'm sure the 360 will be all that and a bag of chips once I get one. But for now, the DS Lite works perfectly for me. The winter actually is a much busier time for me outside of work than the summer with indoor soccer, hockey with the kids, downhill skiing with the wife and kids, Oilers' games on the tube three nights per week, going to Syracuse Crunch AHL hockey games, bowl games, NFL playoffs, Syracuse hoops in the Big East schedule and NCAA's, riding indoors on the trainer, the holidays, etc., etc.

Appreciate the advice, though, and I'm glad you're digging your 360. I'll get there -- some day.

Take care,
PK

Not to thread jack--but we took the kids to the Crunch game Friday night PK. Good time and we know nothing about hockey!

Tony:

Cool! Did the kids like Al the Gorilla, the team mascot? My kids go nuts over him.

Crunch games are a fun night out. Team owner Howard Dolgon is a minor-league city marketer deluxe. The Simones could learn a lot from him in regards to promotion of the Chiefs, but they're so stuck in the 70s in terms of sports marketing that they'll never catch up.

Give me a ring sometime if you want to go with the kids or just the big boys -- you and I. My brother has seasons, so I might be able to snag his good seats some night if he hasn't given them to a customer. Or -- gasp! -- I'll even pay for a seat. :)

Hope all is well.

Take care,
PK

DivotMaker wrote:If MS is truly going to do a die shrink in 07, then I think they have several ways to go about this.

1) Get rid of the Core package. Sell the current Premium package at $349 or even $299.

2) Offer a new Premium package at $449 that includes a 100 GB HD (rumored) and the new HD DVD drive in place of the current DVD drive and make WiFi as part of the new machine instead of the adapter. I would pay $499 for such a package and it would be very competitive to Sony, especially the $449.

I don't know how much the die shrink to .65 nm will save MS, but I do believe that the key to competing with Sony will be pricing. MS needs to target loyal Sony customers. If they can manage to sell the fact that there are minimal differences between the two systems as far as HD rendering capabilities, then the next issue will be price. If MS is $100-150 cheaper and there is no perceived advantage to either console, I gotta think that money talks and bullsh1t walks.

This should be an interesting 6 months coming up....
I agree get rid of the core package. Drop the premium down to 299$ and i like the sound of a new premium package like the one you described.I think that would be a good approach for MS to take
