Awesome post, Zep!

IndyCar 2005 is still my all-time favorite online racing game, by the way. Which IRL tracks are going to be in Toca 3? Hopefully it recreates, without bugs, the amazing fun of wide-open oval racing.

Something about Forza never clicked for me. I picked it up again a couple months ago on the cheap and it is fun, but without the immersiveness of Toca.

I can't wait for Toca 3. In fact, I'm heading to the store today to reserve it and to sell some games to pay for it. The Codies combination of easy to drive, difficult to be blazingly fast is tough to beat. One thing I love about Toca is how, just like in real life, some people are fast on certain types of tracks and struggle on others. That makes a poker night a lot of fun when you finally get settled in at a track and suddenly find yourself up front with the fast group.

Zep, Dave...agree on all your points about Toca and IndyCarSeries

Zep, you need to hook up with Jared and write for the home page of DSP.

Terrific points, Zeppo. I couldn't agree more about the track selection and the 4 extra racers online being major advantages in TOCA. I still prefer the driving model in Forza to that of TOCA but I stand corrected about my favorite racing nights on XBL. Having 12 DSP racers in our MLR series was THE ultimate XBL racing experience.

I'm not as big a fan of oval racing but ICS 2005 was starting to bring me around on that. I was getting lapped pretty frequently but in those moments when I was wheel to wheel with someone were extremely intense and fun times.

And yes, I totally dropped the ball on that 5 lapper at the Ring..... :)

...but I was the winner of the Bathurst 1000.

Indy, Gateway, Nashville and Dover are in TOCA 3. There'salso a Gateway road course and Laguna Seca as well.

The lack of IndyCar Series ovals makes it look like SMI and ISC didn't license their facilities for the game -- as they are tied to EA's NASCAR game, it isn't really a surprise.

That's dissapointing, but the different 1-mile ovals should be quite a challenge to get a handle on a car. None of those tracks is particularly easy. I will miss the cookie cutter 1.5-mile oval.

The greatest online IndyCar race I was in was when Piggy, PK and I raced wheel-to-wheel for 20 laps at Kansas. It was such a clean race too.

We had the three-wide, "This isn't going to work!... Yes, it did!" moment at least three or four times.

Oh well, I'm still jacked for 20 laps on the dirt in a winged sprint car online.

Is the Indy road course included as well?

It is a bummer to have no 1.5-mile cookie cutters. As much as I despise them, they are fun as hell for online racing.

Nashville's one of my favorite ovals, but none of those included will probably produce some of the intense, continuous wheel-to-wheel racing as Michigan, Kansas, Fontana, or Chicago.

My least favorite IndyCar moment was watching PK fly by with his low riding, spark spraying Fontana setup. There was no way to keep up with that f*cker.

That was the only "cheater" setup I ever used in that game. I had to resort to desperation to beat you at that track. :)

Otherwise, I just made minor adjustments to the front wing and tire pressure and raced.

Take care,
PK

what is the best way to start the race? Are you to have the engine going or hit the gas right when the light turns green? seems that too many races i was already inhaling the fumes left by pk, Provo, & piggy....

cant wait for the "John Deere 500".... hehehe

It's best to completely rev up the engine before green light, then at green light you ease off the throttle a bit -- just enough so where the engine revs get up to just below redline. The purpose is to find that "perfect" or ideal balance between traction and wheelspin that allows you to accelerate as quick as possible from a standing start. If you're getting too much wheelspin at green, you have to ease off the throttle a bit more. If you're not getting any "chatter" noises from your rear wheels (this indicates you're maximizing the available amount of traction your tires allow), then you're not applying enough power to the wheels and should mash a little deeper on the throttle.

By the way... Game Trailers has posted up a few movies on TOCA 3. There are new ones to go along with those that were up since last November. AI is informative. Telemetry is pretty cool. And Car Damage one is hilarious. Check 'em out.

Getting that big-*ss rear wing as low as possible was the key at tracks like California, Michigan, and Chicago. I think the other tracks required too much grip over the course of a fuel load to really drag the rear of the car on the ground. I tried it at Texas and bottomed out so much it was impossible not to crash during a run.

Might have to pop the game in and run some more laps.

Kruza, thanks for posting the Gametrailers link. I'm pumped to race the Palmer Audis and from the video, it looks like they have the turbo boosts implemented in the game. Awesome.

The telemetry feature will probably make PK get some tissues.

I played the PS2 TOCA 3 demo last night, and found that it looks and feels very much like TOCA 2 to me. Not a bad thing really, as that was a very solid racer. Was able to race some stock cars at Indy, some Baja off-roaders and some GT/DTM and mostly enjoyed myself. The AI appeared to be on the easy side, but I hear this is typical for a TOCA demo. I'm fairly certain I will be picking this one up next week. With so many different types of racing, it is almost criminal not to give it a shot.

Hopefully there will be enough folks on Live to make it worthwhile, and easy to find the type of races you are looking for.

Hell, I can count at least 10 DSPers who will be online playing this baby.

TOCA 3, like WE 9, Rugby 06 and NCAA MVP 06, is a title that's going to make sports gamers who sold their Xboxes in favor of a 360 shed a tear or two in disgust this late winter and early spring.

Take care,
PK

Yes, I am shedding tears as I had to resort to buying Ps2 versions of NCAA and Arena and now I am wanting to try Rugby 06 and see if I like it (never played or even really watched Rugby) So now Toca is coming and I am really in disgust with myself. If I could only talk the wife into letting me buy another it would all be OK. I dont think its happening. :(

Haha...yeah...it made me break down and pick up another PS2. I would have gotten an Xbox, but the fact that I can only get MLB 06 on the PS2 pushed me to that side. I'll miss out on the Toca nights, but I need to be able to play MLB...so I had to go that way.

This is probably the last movie trailer we'll see before the game comes out.

Check out this movie from Game Trailers. Makes a brief showing of the vast number of vehicle classes in the game. There are some bizarre classes thrown in that I had no idea were included.

ooohhhhhhhhh boyyyyyyyyy!!!!

If the sprint cars race like they do in WOO and the INDY cars race like ICS 2005...this will be the ultimate of the ultimate of racing games.

Wow, even racing lawn mowers.

This will last us DSP'rs well through the year and more.
