Aston Villa played host to Tottenham this evening in a very thrilling match that saw the visitors hold on for a 3-2 Victory.

Baros opened up the scoring with a lovely strike inside the box. Robbie Keane answered back 3 minutes later with his own strike inside the 18. The hotspur were able to take a lead 2-1 lead into half as Berbatov turned his defender on a free kick pass in the box. It looked as if Aston Villa were going to get their equalizer as Lee took down Moore in the Box, but Robison saved the penalty and the Hotspur were able to hold on in the end.

Folks, a quick reminder that the deadline for the first half of Season Nine is this Sunday, April 15. Please try to get your games in by then. I don't think there will be need for forfeits at the halfway point, but having four teams yet to play a single game is a bit distressing.

As to the Cup: we are awaiting the final First Round game to be played (Everton v. Newcastle) before we can start with the meaty part of the tournament, the eight games and sixteen teams of the Second Round. I'd hate to have Cup games lingering into Season Ten with folks changing teams and so on, so I will be posting the Second Round draw Monday AM at the latest. If this final First Round game isn't played by Monday AM, I will flip a coin to determine which team will move on. If it gets completed before then, I'll post the Second Round draw ASAP.

Macsomjrr,

I may be around late tonight to get in our cup match. Will you be around at all? I'm thinking I may be available sometime around 11:00 et. If you are around i'll narrow that down to an exact time. The rest of my weekend is looking real iffy right now.

Let me know.

Div III Result:

West Ham 5 vs. Bayern Munich 0

34' Ashton
69' Tevez
78' Tevez
80' Bowyer
90+ Mullins

25(15) Shots 8(1)
3(3) Fouls 3(1)
58% Poss. 42%

Injuries: Bowyer (Yellow Cross)
Yellow Cards: Demichelis & Lucio

After relentless pressure West Ham were finally able to break down Bayern Munich's resolute defense to come away with a convincing 5-0 win at the Bernebeu.

Bayern entered the match with a defensive mindset as manager Bubbaball opted to go with a 5-3-2 formation for his first match of the season. For much of the first half Bayern were able to soak up \the West Ham pressure and sought to catch the home team on the break with both Makaay and Pizzaro looking lively up front.

West Ham finally got the break when Ashton scored a peach of a goal - a through-ball from from Bowyer sent the striker free and with his first touch he lobbed Oliver Kahn from 20 yards out!

Immediately following the goal, however, the Germans once again shut up shop with Lucio, Demichelis and Van Buyten (a second half sub for Sagnol) keeping West Ham at bay. Twice Bayern had chances to equalize with Makaay heading wide and shooting over on separate chances.

Bayern would rue their misses as the floodgates finally opened in the 69th minute with a neat Tevez breakaway finish following another Bowyer pass. Tevez scored again and Bowyer completed his man of the match performance with a goal of his own in the 80th. Shortly after Bowyer was scythed down by Demichelis and had to be stretchered off.

His replacement, Mullins, got on the score-sheet himself with a crisp volley in injury time.

Great game BB - very unlucky, your D was solid for 3/4 of the match and I was really worried you'd hit me on the counter attack! See u in the return leg!

Just finished the cup match between Newcastle United F.C. and Everton F.C.

Everton 0 - Newcastle 1

Shots (on target) = 6(1) - 15(8 )
Penalties = 0 - 0
Free Kicks = 0 - 1
Corners = 0 - 1
Fouls (offside) = 1(1) - 0(0)
No yellows or reds.
Possession = 46 - 54

Great game. Turned into a real nail biter at the end as I knew I was outmatched skill wise as Fifa managed to adjust late and get himself some great looks on goal, lucky for me though his shooting was just a little off each time. The matches only goal came early on in the 26th minute as Amoebi came diving into the goalies box and caught a bouncing save off of his head.

My first ever WE win!

Livorno 4 - Tottenham 0

The Terrible Twosome struck again as Lucarelli netted a hat trick and Bakayoko hung around for the scraps. The first half saw two very evenly matched teams dancing and jabbing before Lucarelli received a lovely through ball and opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Livorno's manager employed the "Naples" strategy of filling the box with defenders whenever Robbie Keane got the ball, wanting to avoid a repeat of the last meeting between these two clubs that saw Keane run riot and lead his team charging back for a draw. Chances of said comeback diminished once Hotspur defender Chimbonda was served with a red card for an aggressive takedown of Bakayoko just outside the box. Lucarelli capped his brilliant day with a severe-angle header off a cross in the 87th minute that drew the ire of Tottenham's manager and accusations of poor sportsmanship. Livorno representatives argued in the anteceding press conference that goal differential may indeed be a deciding factor in this very competitive ninth Premiership, but nevertheless denied Lucarelli access to the post-match pool of San Siro groupies as a figurative slap on the wrist.

Shots: 19(11) 8(3)
Free Kicks: 5 4
Corner Kicks: 4 2
Fouls: 4(1) 5(2)
Yellows: 0 0
Reds: 0 1
Possession: 50% 50%

Lucarelli: 24', 49', 87'
Bakayoko: 76'

Red: Chimbonda

Cup 2nd Round Draw

Post by Zeppo »

Gang:

The draw for the Second Round of the Cup has been done, and here are the resulting matchups:
  • DSP WE League Season Nine Cup: Second Round (Round of Sixteen)

    Blublub (cecilbturtle) = FC Barçenlona
    v.
    St Cloud = Tottenham Hotspur FC (North East London)

    Leebo33 = Feyenoord Rotterdam
    v.
    DrMacca = West Ham Utd. FC

    JaredM = Olympiacos CFP
    v.
    Slumberland = AS Livorno

    XXXIV 34 = Real Madrid CF
    v.
    HOGZ TheTruth = AC Milan

    TCrouch = FC Internaziolnale Milano
    v.
    Macsomjrr = Newcastle Utd FC

    nyisles16 = C Atletico Madrid
    v.
    Naples39 = AFC Ajax

    Sully OS = ACF Fiorentina
    v.
    bubbaball (bphilipb) = FC Bayern München

    CP Zeppo = AS Monaco FC
    v.
    RobVarak = Aston Villa FC (West Midlands Village)
Remember that the home team is on top. Game settings are the same as League game settings (Summer season, random weather, etc) with the exception of Extra Time set to On and PKs set to On.

There are several intradivisional matchups in this draw, which is not ideal, but there it is. Some highlights of the draw include divsional rivals Monaco v. Villa, two managers who know each other's game very well, and Olympiacos v. Livorno as well as Munich and Fiorentina from Division II. Inter meets fellow first-round survivors Newcastle, while Milan moves on to face Madrid in a battle of heavy-weights.

These games do appear on the schedule page of the Cup section at the SGN site, so they are ready to be reported once they are played. Remember, we don't keep individual stats at the SGN site for Cup games, but we must have injuries and bookings listed here in the thread. Once again, injuries will carry over from Cup to League and vice-versa (as if anyone ever misses a game. . . ) but suspensions and yellow card accumulation is exclusive to each competition.

Let's see if we can get on to the Quarterfinals by the end of this week. Once these games are done, a random draw will take place to set the matchups for the QFs.

Have fun, and play fair!

Monaco Lose On Road, Then Win At Home

Post by Zeppo »

Olympiacos CFP 2 : 1 AS Monaco FC

Monaco travelled to the Stadio Olympico to welcome Olympiacos and their star Rivaldo to the league and were unlucky to come away with nothing after a poor mistake at the back led to the winner in the second half. After the teams traded goals in the first session with goals from Koller and Konstantinou, the second half was wide open, but it took a mistake at the back to create the chance for Olympiacos to take the points. Monserou slid at no one, leaving the striker Konstantinou free to run alone onto the perfectly wieghted through ball off the magic left foot of fading but not yet gone Brazilian superstar Rivaldo, and the big forward made no mistake with the finish, beating Roma from 8 yds. Monaco was unlucky in the final minutes, when Leko found Koller in the box with a nice pass and the big man had time to turn confidently and fire, only to see the shot hammer the face of the crossbar and deflect back out towards midfield. Monaco captain Givet received a yellow card in the first half for a rough tackle from behind just outside the box, but Rivaldo missed the target on the ensuing free kick.

Olympiacos 2 : 1 Monaco

Shots 14 (6) : 15 (6)
Corners 3 : 1
Fouls 0 (0) : 1 (0)
Poss. 49 : 51

Bookings: Givet (MON) - Y
no injuries

AS Monaco FC 2 : 1 Tottenham Hotspur FC

Monaco returned home to take on Hotspur and were the beneficiaries of the luck they did not see in the previous game at Olympiacos. Koller opened the scoring in minute 15 when he used his bulk to power through the central defense near the top of the box. The ball ricocheed around before it popped free to the big man's advantage, and he was able to keep his balance and run onto it and put a shot past the charging keeper for the early lead. It took only a quarter of an hour for the visitors to equalize. Robbie Keane wound up at the end of a nice series of passes just inside the box and with plenty of space to take on Roma, who had no chance to stop the Irishman's shot from 16yds.

The second half saw Hotspur with the bulk of the pressure, but Monaco were able to get on the end of several long balls on the counter attack thanks to the speed of DiVaio and the bulk of Koller. In the dying moments, the home team worked the ball upfield on the ground, and Koller was able to feed an open DiVaio into the box after drawing two defenders toward himself, and the Italian quickly flicked the ball with the outside of his right boot to beat the keeper and steal the full share of the points away from a Hotspur side that deserved at least a draw.

Monaco 2 : 1 Hotspur

Shots 5 (4) : 13 (7)
Corners 1 : 5
Fouls 4 (4) : 5 (3)
Poss. 46 : 54

Bookings: Dawson (TOT) - Y
no injuries

Great games, both. I did feel unlucky in the Olympiacos game, and felt like I left some chances beggin, but not as lucky as I felt to steal the points in the Hotspur game! Crazy, this nutty sport. Very much looking forward to the return matches.
