J_Cauthen wrote:This is out of the scope of the DSP Cup thread, so I'll post it here. Some of you may have noticed that I set up yesterday's (Monday) Daily with Grids disabled and no caddy. That was intentional... I know we have a number of gridless stalwarts who prefer this and I thought it would be fitting to have at least one gridless Daily tournament a week.

Any other thoughts on this? I'm trying to gauge the sentiment about gridless play among those who still play this game and if there is a growing preference for gridless events, I'll try to make them commensurate to the demand for them.
Loved the settings. Thank you. I don't want to suggest going gridless 100% f the time, but it would be cool to mix it up 3-4 days a week to go gridless and the other days with the grid. If I could suggest, I would like to see gridless on some of the tougher courses like Pinehurst, Bethpage, etc as I feel this gives us much more realistic scoring. I am playing gridless offline in CM exclusively and the scoring I am getting is very PGA TOUR-like in most rounds with few exceptions.

Thank you for posting this and asking our opinions.....

And now back to TW13 in 3D...... 8O

I wouldn't mind mixing it up.

I've only been playing the country club weekly and dailys and cut back on playing the game offline. If you guys want to go gridless on some of the dailys then it's fine by me, I'll just sit out those tourneys since they aren't fun for me and I just become frustrated and end up throwing the controller across the floor.

I had never gone grid less before getting online for the first time in months last night. Played the daily at +1 which I'd think is pretty decent for my first time without the grid. So I really don't mind either way but can see getting really frustrated from time to time.

Agreed, but only until you get the hang of it with lots of practice and it makes sinking a birdie/eagle put much more rewarding.....

Nice score BTW!

Thanks for the input on gridless Dailies guys. Based on what I'm hearing so far, I'll say we'll go gridless on Mondays for now. If the demand grows, we'll add another day or two. Having one at least one day a week will allow gamers to sort of cut their teeth on them if they're curious. I still have a preference for grids, but it's not as strong as it was a couple of months ago.

DivotMaker made mention of how even a "synthesized" 3D on his 3D HDTV image helps with his slope discernment when using gridless greens. 3D HDTV is something I haven't paid any mind to, thinking I didn't want to have to wear a special set of glasses to get the 3D effect. But heck, if it helps open a new dimension on this golf game, it might be time that I started paying attention!

As for the 3D glasses, I wear my prescription glasses when I play anyway, so why should this be all that different? I guess I'd have to wear the 3D glasses over my regular glasses?

Finally, I wonder if EA Sports is considering putting 3D support into the next version of Tiger?

You know what gives you a true 3D experience for reading greens? Actually going out and playing real golf...just saying :)

More power to you if you would buy a 3D set to play a video game though John, personally I'll spend that money on the real thing.

Yep, at a minimum of $45 a round. I promised my wife I wouldn't play more than a half-dozen rounds a year until all our kids were out of high-school. My youngest is a senior this coming year... after that, I'll be back in pursuit of my 5 handicap once again :)

I wouldn't do it now, I just bought a 60" Sharp Aquos edge-lit LED set a couple of months ago, so it's going to have to do for a spell. I'm really mostly curious as to what could be done with 3D technology in its current state to make this aspect of the game more realistic.

My personal opinion is 3D is not going to be main stream until the remove the need for glasses in an affordable set. I mean the PS3 has 3D in some games but how often do you hear people talking about it or games designed around it?

As for the real golf I was in a similar situation but then I joined a CC. Besides my monthly dues I don't pay for the golf if I walk. I go out with a group every Sat / Sunday at 7 am and I am home by 11am. My 7 and 9 year old aren't even out of their pj's by then so it's worked out. But I've been there, done that whole 6 hour day for golf on a public course.

I set the Daily to Kiawah Island again today to give us a bit more of the PGA Championship flavor. There was no wind and the greens were like dartboards when I played yesterday evening. Just wanted you guys to know that there is actually a new round and you aren't seeing yesterday's round still on the board.

John, maybe I am in the minority but I really enjoy the Monday daily settings. Tough yet fair enough to score in the red zone. I started Pebble rather strong in the first four holes, cruised halfway thru it but came down hard the last 3 holes of the course.

I understand where you're coming from James. I was four under after 5 holes in Monday's gridless daily, and finished 1 under for the round. I had an eagle, four birdies, and five bogeys! Four of the bogeys were three putt jobs, on of which was only from 13 feet! I'll admit that part of my problems were due to my not taking the time to assess the putts better. I wasn't patient enough to use the progessive elevation survey method to the extent needed and I paid for it.

I'm still on a slight warming trend toward gridless greens, but I don't think I'll ever reach the point where I'd want to play them the majority of the time. As for now, it's a nice diversion on Monday.

Oh, speaking of coming down hard... the Daily we played Sunday at St. Andrews (I think it was)... I came to the 17th hole at 15 under par.... I walked away at 9 under after having a 27 foot putt for birdie  8O That ridiculous pin placement took the cake! You either make the putt, or roll all the way off the green  Chip past the hole coming back, and you're left with a vicious, double breaking downhill putt. I was seriously po'd after that episode!

How many courses have you all mastered? I'm ashamed to say I just mastered Kiawah during the week of the PGA. I'm up to 3 with Celtic Manor and the Dunes course at Navarino being the last 2 I just unlocked today. Methinks Whisting Straits will be damn near impossible due to countless number of bunkers and a gold mastery requirement is to finish a round with no hazards.

I've got 11 mastered so far. Have yet to get an eagle on the Atlanta Athletic Club course and that's the only thing I need to master that one, not sure how close I am on the others.

I only have mastery on 2 courses. Mainly because I blow all my eagle opportunities, and I don't have the requisite 5 eagles on each course.

Feel free to remove me from the Digital Sportspage club to open a spot for a new player. I took advantage of the 100 percent trade-in bonus at Best Buy this week and traded in TW 13 today.

Thanks.

Paul, thanks for the note. We'll keep you onboard until someone who wants to play in the club indicates an interest in taking your spot. It helps the club to have 25 members enrolled, whether they're active or not, so even though you don't own the game anymore you are still contributing to the club's status. I'm not to proud to exploit any advantage at our disposal to give our club a fighting chance at breaking back into the top 100. 8)

Vader, dd trane and I met up in the DSPCC created room in the Difficulty lobby tonight. We got a couple of 9-hole Simultaneous rounds played before I had to leave to deal with a "teenager" issue (those of you with teenagers, use your imagination). Anyway, it's all cool now and the teenager is okay, other than the fact that he'll be gounded this weekend.

How'd you guys like that "Live Weather" at Dubai tonight? Humbling, wasn't it? :)

Fun stuff John and ddtrane! Dubai was certainly an adventurous 9 holes.

Great stuff John, I really enjoyed that session. I noticed one thing though, offline I never miss fairways but online I constantly missed fairways, but overall, this game rules online. I'd be interested in playing Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights, if interested let me know, if not I understand.

And Dubai was just flat out mean especially when I took a swim with that 22mph headwind, I actually thought I had a chance to finish in second until Vader pulled that eagle outta his a$$ on the 7th hole.

Good times at Sawgrass Mark, you're quite the putting machine especially on the back nine. Next time please turn off the swing meters, those drove me crazy especially when I missed a four foot eagle!

I joined the session you had set up and was surprised when the meters were on, I don't like playing with them on anymore either, the putting has a totally different feel with meters on and I didn't get the hang of them again until the back 9.
