You cats are grinding me down. As someone who LOVED First Person Football in the 2K games, widely panned as a gimmick by many, I need to try Madden 06 -- soon!
Plus I like the challenge of all the pre-snap options and trying to learn them, much like all of the moves in Winning Eleven 8. That kind of complexity adds to the long-term appeal of a game for me.

Take care,
PK

Woohoo, finally won a game against the CPU on All-Pro difficult (6 minutes).
I lost 6 or 7 games straight just to try to get used to Madden (I was a 2k5 man) and the passing cone. After that many games, it is starting to click with me. That and the Truck Stick, basically, you have to push it a 1/2 second before you get hit, or it is useless.
The more I play, the more I like the passing cone. At first, I was so focused on the cone that I don't even look at the other receiver. Once I ignore the cone and scan the field for an open man, I pass MUCH better by swinging the cone to the open guy. Yes, it took an extra 1/2 second but I don't mind with the precision passing.
The Cone makes passing more rewarding!
Running game is fun, but I don't juke/stiff arm very well. I never tried that backwards skip thing (down on right analog). But the Truck Stick works well now that I got the timing down.
Lots of pre-snap adjustments, which is way over my head since my football knowledge is very limited, I can do the hot-routes (which is very nice so you can stretch the field and pass it underneath). Defense is fun to play too but I haven't figure out all the pre-snap adjustment you can do (I would like to double up on Owens hehe). I don't see any money play, the CPU is pretty good at running the ball but passing is so-so. CPU at All-Pro's 3rd down conversion is pretty horrid.
Overall, this is a fun football game and will take a number of games for 2K5 fans to switch. I still like the way 2K5 feels more (the way a player cuts and all, it just feels more substantial), but this is good considering there is no alternative.
BTW, I am playing on the PS2 version. Is that a mistake or should I have gotten the Xbox instead?

You can guarantee that I will be f*cked up out of my mind when we play, because if I'm going to get humiliated, tarred, feathered and pelted with rocks and garbage that badly, I better be able to laugh my ass off long and loud about it.bkrich83 wrote:LOL, I sure as hell do.pk500 wrote:Sport ROXXORS. Yeah, probably. I thought the Cone was a gimmick based on previews, but enough people whose opinions I trust say it isn't, so now I'm really intrigued.
Plus I didn't read enough previews to realize all of the pre-snap stuff that was added this year.
And there's also the fact that I still prefer the NFL to college football despite my interest in college football climbing ... yada-yada-yada.
Yeah, I'm looking to sell some sh*t quickly on eBay to fund a Madden 06 purchase.

I have been pretty lukewarm on Madden the last few years. Although I Thought last year they took some steps in the right direction. I do really enjoy this years game so far.
I do still miss having a new 2k series game to play however.

pk, the cone is nothing more than a gimmick that will get you sacked. Here are few very repected posters at OS explaining it better than I can:pk500 wrote:BK:

this one from gagnon39
and this one from TombsongHere's the problem I have with QB vision. It just seems like an extra step that the user has to make before throwing the ball, which results in a lot of sacks, at least for me. QB vision does not necissarily need to be in the game because the user has always had to use "his" vision in the first place. Althought all the receivers are clearly viewable on the screen when the QB drops back its not like the user has the ability to literally lock onto all receivers, you have to go through your progressions.
Its a bit hard to explain what I'm saying so I'll say it again like this. Think about all the football games prior to this one. When you dropped back and the receiver icons came up (X, B, A or square, triangle, whatever) you usually had a primary receiver you'd look at first right? I know I did, and still do. Once the ball is snapped you literally are looking at him, if he's covered you move to another receiver that's hopefully open, going through your progession until you find a hole in the defense. This is QB vision enough. I understand that EA wanted to make certain QB's have better vision but that can easily be adjusted with the pass accuracy in my opinion.
Just my 2 cents.
There are a lot of posts over at OS both praising and bashing the cone, but these two I think make the most sense in regard to it being a gimmick and why a lot of people don't like it.I finally got to play a few games of Madden. I used the Saints and Aaron Brooks "vision cone" is small. So my first experience with this was a challenge. Using the right stick to move the cone is too slow so I got in a rythm using the right trigger and pressing the WR button.
After a few games I will applaud EA at the attempt to do something with the passing game. Thats a step in the right direction for them. However The cone is more an annoyance than a fun feature. Once you get the hang of it, it just becomes a extra step to passing the ball that in the end serves only one purpose, and thats to slow you down.
Once I got it in my head to REMEMBER to look at the guy I want to throw to then throw(years of just hitting the button one time is hard to get over) this is now nothing more than a excercise in double tapping the button of the WR I wish to throw to. Nothing else has changed. I still make my reads the way I always have. The challenege here now is to be fast enough to make the double taps before you get sacked.
I would not be surprised if in a month most people will be disabling this feature because I can see already how once you get the hang of it, its really gonna annoy you more than be a fun feature.
Ill say this. If I was a kid growing up today and this was my first time ever playing madden, this would be a really great game and I would love it. However I have been playing this game for 13 years and this is the ausience I think EA has lost some touch with. To us old timers the game has not evolved or does not get features added year to year that make us go DAMN ! I also realise thats hard to do year after year, but the Madden team has really got to consider this when they are on the drawing board for the new games. What can we add to make the game fresh for the VETS.
This is not a bash on the game, the game with its other features give you more to tinker with strategy wise which is a good thing. All and all its not a bad rendition of Madden. Nothing ground breaking, but a nice game.

Save your voice bk, those oldtimers can't hear you anyway. I always wonder who they made the easy play option forbkrich83 wrote:How is it a gimmick that will get you sacked?
I've probably been sacked twice total in the last 3 or 4 games online.

Why would I do that. I have no desire to play random games, and I am betting neither does PK, which was who you addressed your gripe too.Badgun wrote:Well you also play all the OS guys all the time.
