Hey Zep is this a correct gamertag for this individual?
fanatic (crucialmike00) = S.L. Benfica - Pick 'Em
I sent him a Friends Request 3 days ago and it is still pending and looking at his gamer card it doesn't even show that he has ever been online. I am assuming i screwed something up and put in an incorrect gamertag.
I'll be online tonight after 9pm CST if anyone wants to beat up on me.
Thanks

Monaco Wins Again At Home
AS Monaco FC 3 : 1 Bolton Wanderers FC
Monaco played their third home game in a row and scored three times in the first half on their way to a 3-1 defeat of Bolton Wanderers for their second win of the season. The big man Jan Koller opened the scoring in the 18th minute off of a feed from Camel Meriem, and strike partner DiVaio doubled the lead four minutes later after another nice pass from Meriem unlocked the Bolton defense. Midfielder Jaroslav Plasil completed the first half scoring with a diving header inside the 6yd box to poke a Leandro Cufre cross past the helpless Stekelenburg in goal.
The second half saw more possession for Wanderers, who finally broke through in minute 53' thanks to a brilliant strike from Gary Speed, but it was not enough to overcome the big lead. The Monagasue club were able to hold off the final probes from Wanderers to secure their second win of the season. They won't play at home again until the second half of the season.
Monaco 3 : 1 Wanderers
MON: Koller 18'; DiVaio 22'; Plasil 33'
BOL: Speed 53'
S(oG) 6(5) : 6(2)
Corners 0 : 2
Fouls (Off) 2(0) : 2(2)
Poss. 44 : 56

Good game XXXIV. Fight to stay up!! See you in the second half.

I'm dumb, I put in fanatic as the GT.Sully wrote:I just shot him a request, and that's his tag. He has 160 gamerpoints, last seen 12 hours ago playing WE.
Maybe you spelled it wrong?
Maybe thats why JackB hasn't accepted me either, I better check that tag too.

Danimal, and everyone:
In the team list that is included in the first post of this thread (easy to access, and I update it regularly as we go), the users' names I have are their gamertags (thus snate is listed as snatex and Jared is listed as JaredM). If the GT is wholly unrelated to the user's DSP tag, I put the GT in parenthases (such as fanatic (crucialmike00) and Blublub (cecilbturtle) for example). I may end up doing the same at the SGN League site, or maybe Jason and I can figure out a way to make a cross-reference list or something for GTs.

Eh, I'm over it. I don't usually get agitated, sorry for letting it show
It's a lesson learned. I assumed that it would be in "kill the clock" mode, so I did long passes from the instant I took the pass from center field into your defense, then got scored on. I probably would have just at least tried to kick it around to my own teammates had I known that I was going to get scored on again. Just a different style of play...in football or a sport that I'm familiar with, you can just run the ball and run out the clock. I learned a lesson here...in soccer you can't do that. Even 2 goals could be erased in a hurry, so there's no "dead time". Considering the burst of offense I had in the middle of the game, it was a poor assumption on my part, nothing more. I assumed that you were going to sit on the ball, but if you have a pass intercepted and I knock one in with Adriano, suddenly you're only 1 goal up and it's a game again.
That's the problem with not understanding the sport that I'm playing. I'm using (and expecting) strategies from the wrong sport, and it's going to be a continual learning process.
But no worries man. You're just a fantastic player, and I'm anything but. It was a very well played game, and very educational.

Sporting Lisbon 1:1 Fiorentina
After an unremarkable first half, the game came to life a bit in the 2nd half after Mutu beat two defenders on a loose ball and finished into the corner, putting the visitors ahead in the 59'.
Sporting responded by putting more men forward, and a breakthrough came in the 80th minute as substitute (and soon to be starter) Bueno drove home a diving header.
Both teams had a few chances for a winner, but the final whistle blew as a Fiorentina breakaway opportunity sailed over the bar.

I also need your help on this on Sully, as I didn't get the name of the guy who picked up a yellow in the first half. I think it was one of your central defenders, whose name started with 'Di.' Let me know who that is and make sure he's on your roster at the league site, then I'll update the result there.

I'm in the same boat Terry, I don't know what the hell I am doing. I spent much of my first game asking leebo questions, he told me how to rempa the controls so Dash waso n the trigger and that helped a lot.
But I have no idea how to aim a shot, they always seem to go high. I keep seeing people mention the Super-Cancel move, I have no idea what that is.
I've gotten to the point where I am readng a trick out of the manual and then trying to do it in practice mode and I'm like 50% sucessful. I really get the feeling they want you to play this game with the D-pad and I hate using that.
But it is a lot of fun to play.

The only way to get used to shooting is in practice mode. I recommend spending some time there doing the shooting drills to practice hitting the corners. Also, as a general rule, you have to be very mindful of player's momentum and preferred foot when shooting.Danimal wrote:I'm in the same boat Terry, I don't know what the hell I am doing. I also always used to use the dpad when I played on PS2, but the 360 dpad kinda sucks, so I've switched to the stick for now. Makes it a little harder to dribble for me, but easier to aim shots I find.
A couple tips, Danimal. First of all, make sure you have your 'cursor settings' set so that you see the players' names over their heads, instead of a 1 or a 2. This makes all the difference, much like getting proper rosters for NCAA football or College Hoops.
Don't worry about the super cancel. It's not nearly as useful in the 360 version to bump and jostle players, and its only real usefulness is when you're trying to avoid touching a ball that is on its way out of play that you don't want to touch, essentially to negate the magneting towards the ball when you choose to. You can do a lot of other stuff with it, including cancel charged-up passes or shots, but it's by no means a basic technique.
The only way to get better is to play more, v. CPU or against people. The more people you play against, the more different styles you will see and you may pick up a few things about moving the ball or creating scoring chances from them as well.
I love the training mode because of the great 'play again' function, which is mapped to the back button. It's so much fun to set up a nice pass for a shot, and then take the shot a million different ways with the 'play again' function. Remember you can put defensive players on the training pitch by going into the formation screen, switching to the other side with the X button, and then changing their 'participation' status. You can put a full side out there, or just four defenders, or however many you want. You can also change the participation status of your own side, so you can mess around with 5 on 3 or something. The Training Menu also has Free Kick, Corner Kick, and Shoot training, all of which can be useful (although I don't really like Shoot training, as I prefer to have the play again function available to get more out of shooting practice).
Finally, use the radar. Lots of spaces will open up on the field on the perimeter of the defense or on the opposite flank. For example, if you have the ball with your right back, oftentimes there is a huge amount of space at the front left of your formation, where your players will have space and time if you can get them the ball. Switching the attack from one side to the other is a basic and key tactic, but it can be hard to see or recognize this since you can't see the whole field in the game. (This is actually something very hard to discern on TV as well, but when you see a game live it's as plain as day and obvious and impossible to miss.) The more you use the radar, the better you can see the whole field, and thus find the spaces where you have an advantage in numbers.
A great way to learn to use the radar is to play a few games in 'zoom' camera. Zoom camera is awesome on the 360, btw, much better than I ever remember it on PS2 or Xbox in past years. I'm not exactly sure why that is (maybe the wider aspect ratio helps me see more of the field, maybe the player models and animations are that much better, though I am certain the player/ ball interaction is much better and that is part of it), but zoom camera is crazy fun to me on 360. Anyway, if you are in zoom camera, you pretty much be forced to use the radar when you have the ball, and two things will happen. One, you will learn to trust what the radar is showing you, in terms of where the open guy is, or where there is lots of space; second, you will gain a much better understanding of ball control and how important timing is even with simple things like dribbling or short passes. Plus, the personality of the players comes through brilliantly in zoom camera, which never hurts. The wide camera is almost too far away to recognize most players easily, but the zoom camera makes each player fully individual.
The D-pad on the 360 is useless without proper modifications:

I find the stick is fine for the way I play, but a lot of the feints and fancy tricks are easier to pull off with a working D-pad, because they require doulbe-taps and such. Basic use of good timing, ball movement, etc. is much, much more important than fancy moves or tricks.
I'm always up for an interdivisional friendly as long as I'm not playing SC or something

Anyone who's played me lately knows that there it is tremendously ironic for me to offer shooting advice on the 360 version
Nevertheless, Zep's last point is dead on. Play, practice, the play some more. I'm still not happy with my shooting, but it's like this almost every year albeit not to this extent. I'm in full woodshed mode right now, and I'm even foregoing Crackdown in favor of the chance to train and play more. There are no controller tricks that will help, you just have to learn to find space and time the shots properly to coordinate balance, momentum and the proper shooting foot.
