ScoopBrady wrote:Wow, I really didn't expect this for launch. I can't believe there's been lines since 7:00 am yesterday in some places and that Best Buys have lines of over 100. I thought it might be like the PSP launch where you could walk into a Target or Comp USA and buy 10 of them if you wanted to.
Who could have predicted that Microsoft would purposely limit supply or have problems with production or distribution (at least 2 stores I visited today did not receive a shipment and gave out vouchers to those in line to come back tomorrow)? Circuit City and Wal-Marts around here received 40-60 PSPs at launch. Those same stores are getting as few as 10 360s. The Wal-Mart where I bought my launch PS2 got 20 360s compared to 35 PS2's.

The shortage is a real, but it's on mainly on the supply side. I talked to a guy at K-Mart and he said they were lining up at 1AM last night. I have a feeling those were people spilling over from the Wal-Marts. He said he "could tell by looking at them that they were the hardest of the hardcore"...LOL. Those people would have normally purchased at EB or Gamestop but were forced to camp out because some EBs, like mine, only got 16% of the pre-orders.

Microsoft will claim this to be a highly sucesful launch, not sure how you can do that when you limit the supply.

I'm a little ibtter today because my boss said he was getting one for everybody for Xmas, well I told him exactly what to do, gave him contatcs I had at local stores etc. What does he choose to do?

He orders from f***in Wolf Camera online, then today when he called to check and they said they wouldn't have any until 2006, he canceled the order and is now looking for me to locate 10 of these things before our holiday party. Can you say asshat? Well I did about 50 times in the last hour.

It really is a shame that willing consumers have 500+ dollars laying around, trying to spend it on a product and they can't seem to get that product in consumers hands.

I'm definitely more pissed that I wasted a paid vacation day than I am about the box itself. I was fairly certain I wouldn't be able to find one, but there was a slim chance. The vacation day hurts much worse.

Here's the situation north of the border as I was strolling with my new born. Sold out everywhere, Walmart, BB, FutureShop, EB has a few left but it's only for the pre-ordered people. Zellers and Superstore only had 8 left per store but the core system. When I asked around when would be the new shipment, the earliest answer was from FS (2 weeks) while the rest of the stores said probably in January. In other words, for the hard core gamers the only chance here would be Ebay or Buy&Sell.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, but honestly can you really be pissed at your boss for attempting to buy everyone at your company a 360? Sounds pretty generous to me. Just bad luck.

You know what's really funny...now I know why MS came up with 2 SKUs.

To screw the consumer. Think of it this way. If they make all of them Premium...they don't get the huge markup on the accessories. If people can't find the Premium units, they will buy the core and piece together the rest of it...costing much more. MS would love for that to happen. With the huge shortage, people are just buying what they can get.

If you knew him you would be pissed to :). I gave him all this information at the end of June. He could have pre-ordered from a number of places and had this in time. I wrote out exactly what he had to do and he choose not to do it.

Now it is my burden to try and solve the unsolveable, my guess is short of traveling out of NA where no one will buy the 360 anyway, I am SOL until Jan the earliest.

To think I had one pre-order and canceld it bugs me

I think it's a bit inaccurate to say that MS "limited supply," as if they were trying to prevent themselves from selling more units at launch. Although there is certainly some benefit to be gained from the publicity of a launch frenzy, it pales in comparison to the amount of revenue that would have been generated by fully meeting demand for a world-wide launch. And those are the operative words. MS had a limited amount of time to produce units, and chose to forego a NA-only launch. In that respect the supply is more limited than it could have been, but hardly a result of MS deliberately under-supplying retailers.

I think too they are struggling to balance the shipments here in N.A. as well as oversees. I could almost MS shorting the US some units so they can perhaps gain a little edge in Europe.

What? You went though all of that to get one and now you're selling it?
If I can make double what I paid for it, then heck yeah I'll sell it. It's not as though I sat out in the cold last night for a few hours. Don't know if it's legit or not, but people are selling theirs on ebay for a grand.

Plus, it's not like I'm jonesing to play it right NOW. I could ultimately wait until the beginning of the year if I have to.
Just seemed to me you really were jonsing for it. Heck, I'm all for it.

To have one at home waiting to be hooked up and not hooking it up is plain crazy! ;)

Todd,

You're right. I'm sure once I get home this evening and the box is staring me in the face, I'm going to want to open it right up! Of course, the wife and two screaming kids might have something to say about that.

Now, I'm starting to think that the reason you want me to keep this is so you can stop by play a few games of Madden. By all means, c'mon!

Went to my usual CompUSA at about 7:30 AM. Wasn't sure, but I later found out I was 35th in line. CompUSA had 36 systems (30 Premium and 6 Core). I ended up with a core system, but bought the TAP warranty for $34.99. As soon as new Premium systems come in, I will return my core system and exchange it for a Premium + $100.

So far only played Tiger and considering I have a standard 36" Panasonic TV with component cables, the game looks and so far plays very well.

that's not the problem, Geneva Il is not the meca of culture and every effin store had lines and sold out. My Best Buy got 57 units and they were the higest, walmart 18, everyone else 8-12.

When you try and do a world wide launch you f*** over somebody, apparently the USA is not MS target market or they would not have short changed everyone.

Here is the problem.

http://www.smashmyxbox.com/

They smashed your Xbox 360 DB.

News
November 22nd 2005 - 10am - Well, after 55 hours of pain, cold, and suffering, we have got our Xbox 360 and successfully smashed it outside Best Buy minutes later, with a large sledgehammer in front of a few Xbox Fanboys who just bought brand new 360s. Short video clip will be posted tomorrow (23rd) and the longer documentary style one will be posted with the next few days. For now, enjoy these pictures!

Now you're reading my mind. I'll be down in the valley after work tonight getting a few games at Best Buy for my PC. :)

A little off topic, but for anyone that picked up the system, have you had any of the dreaded dirty disc errors happen to you?

Unfortunately, there are already a couple of posts over at OS from people who are still claiming to be getting the DDE's even on the new system. If true, that really sucks.

Well I stopped at a couple of Wal Mart super centers this morning before heading to work just to hear what the launch was like last night and a very very slim hope that maybe there would be one available, my local store only got in 6 units and the other one got 4 premiums and 16 cores.

Funny story with the store that got the 20 systems was the cashier talked about how the people who were camping out in the store last night wanted the employees of the store to provide them with free refreshments while they waited as they didn't want to leave and lose their spot in line and they also wanted them to order them pizza, I guess one kid was there since 10pm Sunday night.

So it looks like I won't be getting one until next year now. Congrats to everyone who was able to pick one up today, I look forward to reading your impressions.

Zeppo, are you still calling around tonight? The lines at every store in Manhattan today were ridiculous. I drove to Target in College Point this morning, but the line looked way too long and it would have made me late for work... which would have been fine if it were a surer bet, but it looked grim. Speaking of grim, all the lines I've checked out in the last couple days really gave me the creeps. People I would not want to hang out with.
