Interesting...I never got that...nor can I get into my Cart to even try it out. Apparently a lot of people are doing it because their server appears to be fubar.
Hmmm.

Re: Gran Turismo 5 - Less than 2 months away now
I am a bit concerned that this game is too EASY... I've watched some videos on youtube and it seems like the player's car can just blow by the whole field within 1/2 a lap or less. I never thought I'd say this, but I think I'll pass on gt5 unless it gets rave reviews and the game isn't all glitz and no depth.
Re: Gran Turismo 5 - Less than 2 months away now
Saw this posted over at OS:
Eurogamer has the Gran Turismo 5 patch version 1.01 details. Available now, for those that already have the game.
Quote:
"The patch was 133MB and downloaded and installed in a couple of minutes. When the game booted, it then recommended a further install from disc which took about five minutes.
It unlocks open and private racing lobbies, community features such a meassage board, mail and gifts, Gran Turismo TV (a store for downloading video content - all free at the moment), the Museum (cards/photos about automotive history that can be traded) and a news service on the title screen."

Re: Gran Turismo 5 - Less than 2 months away now
I think the complaints about GT's AI have been going on for a lot longer than since GT4 was released.Rodster wrote: IMO the reason this rinse, repeat formula has worked so well in the past is because there was no Forza and the PS2 was so dominant. Forza 2 clearly did things better than GT. Forza 3 has done it even better and is a gorgeous looking game to boot. The AI while not perfect in Forza 3 is clearly better than what's in Gran Turismo. And there are other console racing games like Grid and other Codemaster games that have better AI.
This game has been stuck in neutral since the original GT to use a racing metaphor. Clearly after 5 years this appears to be a half assed effort.
GT sales are on a whole other level from those Grid and Codemaster games. Maybe since X360 has higher installed base, GT5 won't sell as well as Forza3. But I bet a lot of Forza's sales went to people who were bowled over by the graphics, not by good AI. Especially since that's an online game and people who really want a competitive game is going to play online anyways.
The 5 years of "half assed" development is only from your perspective. That length of time represents a huge development cost, not just in terms of direct salaries paid during this time but from missing out on revenues years ago by not coming out with the game earlier. Sony wouldn't have kept writing checks if they don't think ultimately there will be a return on the tens of millions they've probably spent. Since they're writing the checks, their opinions on how that development time has been spent matters more.
Just remembered also that some of the delays were due to features that Sony wanted, like I believe 3D support was added recently to sell those 3D TVs they want to sell.
Re: Gran Turismo 5 - Less than 2 months away now
I'm not saying they shouldn't stick to their formula, you're right, it makes them tons of cash, just like James Camerons gorgeous but lame movies keep raking in the bucks. But underneath the chrome (which to me looked no better than Forza) it's the same old game.
As for AI, Race Pro, which is the best console racing game ever in my opinion, has much better AI with a field of 20 cars; F1 2010 has decent AI also, with 22 cars on track. And the best console racing AI hands down is from a little budget title based on the Indy cars of the late sixties with 33 cars on track.
They'll make their money, so Sony will be happy with them. But the game just feels like the emperor has no clothes (at least for the limited time I was able to play the demo).
I may snag it off the RLS site for $10 when it shows up, mainly because I'm interested inthe race management part, but even then I want to hear more about it.

Impressions both good and bad from two longtime GT gamers who had extensive game time with GT5:
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/ar ... 1&site=psm
The bad:
"But it hasn't changed. It's barely evolved and it still has all the problems, annoyances and poor design it always had. After more than a decade of development, Polyphony has simply used up every credible excuse. This thing is a dinosaur.
Unless the later stages and the online sections (inoperable at the time of writing) can utterly override the problems - perhaps by loading an entirely new game I haven't seen yet - GT5 is going to be the monolithic headstone for a once-great series. Just what the hell have they been doing for five years?"
The Good:
"Gran Turismo 5, then, is not about reinventing the wheel, it's about making the perfect realisation of it at long, long last. And in many ways, as a GT fan, Gran Turismo 5 is everything I've been waiting (and waiting) for. It does everything GT should, in a GT-ish sort of way, but does it all with a gloss, depth and dynamism never before possible.
It's brilliant: the best GT yet, but in true GT style there are of course a few things I'd change. Does it matter? Does it hell. GT5 is THE Gran Turismo. Here's to losing the next five years in a cloud of exhaust fumes."

Re: Gran Turismo 5 - Less than 2 months away now
IGN reveiw is up -- they give it an 8.5 overall. Sounds like there are a lot of positives, and I'm looking forward to seeing what PD does with the game post-release, but I think I'm just gonna stick with Backbreaker on this football weekend, mix in some NBA2k11 and pick up GT5 somewhere down the road. February will be a good time for me to get into a racing game, after football season and before The Show and MLB2k come out. By then, another patch for GT5 will probably be out or due very soon.
Long term, I'm sure I'll get great enjoyment out of GT5 as it sounds like the 3D is awesome (not from the IGN review but from other impressions I've read), and I know I'll be in for a new television (likely a 3D one) before the next GT comes out. Not even having seen any games in 3D yet, I've got to believe that GT5 and The Show in 3D are (or will be) worth the investment once 3D tv prices come down a little more.

Re: Gran Turismo 5 - Less than 2 months away now
IGN sums up nicely what GT veterans including PK have been saying for so long, in other words Polyphony Digital mailed it in after 5 years.
regarding the AI:
"At least the races, which utilize Gran Turismo's typically brilliant replay facilities alongside a generous ream of telemetry, are pretty to look at, and the A.I is itself convincing. Unfortunately the same can't be said when it's yourself in charge, and A-Spec's races aren't helped by the return of the series' now trademark zombie A.I. Any tweaks that have been made are hard to decipher as by and large your fellow racers will pay little attention to your on-track maneuvers, often braking at inexplicable moments and turning what should be a high-octane contest into a comic bout of very expensive bumper cars."
Closing Comments:
"Gran Turismo 5 is a 10/10 simulator wrapped up in a 5/10 game – driving is as exhilarating as anything that’s gone before, and slavish obsession with the minutiae of many of its cars ensure it's an encyclopaedia of automotive delights. Its brilliance on the track, however is matched by its sloppiness off of it, and there’s a lack of polish that would at one time have seemed sacrilegious to the series. Ultimately its driving wins out to ensure that it’s still a great game, but it leaves that nagging doubt; this could have been a masterpiece were it not for the fact that Polyphony was so absorbed with the detail that it took its eye off the ball."

Re: Gran Turismo 5 - Less than 2 months away now
Oh come on, they didn't mail it in and weren't lazy--that's one of my least favorite criticisms of developers. I think it is very clear that PD busted their asses on this game, however misguided their extreme efforts might have been when it comes to making a racing game.Rodster wrote:IGN sums up nicely what GT veterans including PK have been saying for so long, in other words Polyphony Digital mailed it in after 5 years.
I think it is funny that a driving game with sub-par AI and the classic GT bumper cars can still get reviews in the 8-10 range, but reviewers only seem interested in judging it as a GT game while ignoring the rest of the genre. Whatever, I don't get it.

Re: Gran Turismo 5 - Less than 2 months away now
Am I the only dork that got it at midnight last night?
The WalMart by me had plenty of them.
All I did was ghost race a little, checked out some of my favorite tracks, Laguna, Monaco, and Trial Mt. I didn't spend a lot of time with it. It looks gorgeous. The car modeling is improved. The handling seems the same, at least in the Mustang and Ferrari I was driving.
It was just nice to ghost race without "NEXT LAP INVALID" popping up every other lap.
I did one quick race at High Speed Ring with a Ferrari, started in 12th, finished in 4th. It's hard to judge the AI after just two laps.
Somebody posted it takes 45 minutes to load. I don't know, it only took me about 10. No longer than any other PS3 game.
One thing that bugged me was when you scroll through the cars you can see a thumbnail and the name of the car, but it takes forever for the larger, rotating image of the car to come up.
Looking forward to spending more time with it this weekend.

Re: Gran Turismo 5 - Less than 2 months away now
We can agree to disagree. I think they mailed it in. Too many of the same things wrong with previous GT games have found there way into GT5 and standard cars were taken from GT4 that's why they have no in dash view. It took five freaking years for basically the same game as GT4-GT3, in my opinion that's mailing it in. All they added was more of the same and improved a few things that doesn't improve the overall racing experience while Forza 2 and Forza 3 has done the opposite.Dave wrote:Oh come on, they didn't mail it in and weren't lazy--that's one of my least favorite criticisms of developers. Re: Gran Turismo 5 - Less than 2 months away now
A sucker is born every day. I picked this up at midnight. I am used to working 3rd shift, so I stayed up from 1am-8am playing the game. It's a fun game, but if this was a NEW offering it would probably not get a pass like it is from a lot of GT fans. After putting in 7 hours with this game, I am still confused about it. There are things GT does very well, and things it sucks at. The cars are more fun to drive than the cars in Forza by far, but the racing SUCKS. In Forza you can easily be convinced that the ai you are racing could be a real person. No real person drives like the AI in GT. The sense of speed in GT is terrible unless you have a premium car, too. 90 mph in a real car feels pretty fast, but in GT when you're doing 90 it feels like 35mph on a suburb road.
I am going to keep the game and enjoy it, but if my 360 still worked I would honestly rather play Forza over this. Some of the graphics in this game are incredible, but that doesn't make a game. The movies in MGS4 were some of the best visuals ever seen in a ps3 game, but even those couldn't save it for many people because the GAMEPLAY itself wasn't that fun. I am really wondering what took so long for the developers to make this game. I would give it a 7/10. It's not bad, but considering the budget and the time that they had, it has left me shaking my head...

Fletch so do the premium cars give a better sense of speed? I'm waiting for Amazon to put the game up for trade as it may go back pretty quick if they offer me $50 for trade.

PS3 games take 10 minutes to load? Seriously? That would drive me insane -- I get pissed off waiting for two minutes for iRacing to load!lexbur wrote:Somebody posted it takes 45 minutes to load. I don't know, it only took me about 10. No longer than any other PS3 game.

They give much better sense of speed due to their acceleration, yeah. I own a car that's in the game. Driving my car 110 is scary in real life. In the game it LOOKS and feels like you're doing 55. The high end cars capture the speed nicely, though.Rodster wrote:Fletch so do the premium cars give a better sense of speed? Understeer in fwd cars is BAD.... I am sorry, but a Civic can take a turn at 80mph just fine. Try it in this game and you will shoot straight into the wall. Is this improved with a wheel? Maybe it's a controller issue...
Still liking the game!

I just learned that a guy I've been playing online football with for years is writing the 1up.com review. I'm really anxious to see what he has to say in an official review.

If you take Forza's AI,tuning, damage and sense of speed with GT graphics and car list, you'd have a hellllla game.
