Rockstar announces Red Dead Redemption - PS3/360

This is nit-picky but being from the west some of the stuff seems like they never really visited out here and it's what someone from the coasts think the west is like.
As for the mission set-up it feels different from GTA but I know it's exactly the same. In GTA you know you have several missions at each mission location and progression felt very much on rails. Maybe it's because of the world, but it doesn't feel that same way in RDR.
The only think that really kills off my enjoyment at times is when you do something to a civilian, like bump into them with the horse, then somehow a bounty is put on your head. I also think there are some mission save bugs, I completed a side mission, saved and returned to find that the mission wasn't completed.
Poker is lame but horseshoes is my favorite mini-game.

OK, ran into my first Mountain Lion. Holy crap they can kill you fast.
Think it took me and my horse out in the span of about 5 seconds. I was still rolling around trying to figure out how to get back up after it mauled my horse, and then in about 1 swipe I was dead too.
Makes sense, considering a wolf biting me turns the screen bright red like I'm dying instantly, but it was still impressive and shocking at the same time. The worst part was I was looking for a boar--I saw a lump on the side of the road by some bushes and just sauntered up to it to see what it was.
5 seconds later, I knew--right as the reloading started

Either visit the stagecoaches if you're in town (it actually looks like a round shield with a vertical sword icon on it to me for some reason), or just hit back and go to set up a campsite. At the site you can choose to travel to destination. If you set a map waypoint before camping, you can even fast travel there.RallyMonkey wrote:I think poker is pretty well done actually, but i haven't found horseshoes yet so we shall see.
Wicked noob question here, but how to you fast travel to places you've already been to? I know it's possible like in GTA, but i can't figure out how to do it.
I think they did a great job making a pastiche of classic Western environments. Sure it's unrealistic to have them all jumbled together like they are, but it's worth it to have some dynamics to the world. There are some flat-out amazing views!JRod wrote:This is nit-picky but being from the west some of the stuff seems like they never really visited out here and it's what someone from the coasts think the west is like.
I spent almost an hour doing nothing but hunting and sharpshooting challenges. So much fun!

I got off my horse to pick up a dead guy's gun. Before I could even turn around, 3 bears ran out of the woods & mauled me in about 3 seconds. I never even got a shot-off...TCrouch wrote:OK, ran into my first Mountain Lion. Holy crap they can kill you fast.

Because it is a game...Shhh. Don't tell anyone.macsomjrr wrote:One thing that bugs me is the deadly accuracy of the guns. Isn't this supposed to be the old west? How come I can shoot 10 guys from over 100 yards away with 10 bullets in seconds.
If the guns were 100% replicated you would have to be standing on top of people hoping to hit them. They are emulating a western movie not real life.

You obviously didn't see me playing last night...macsomjrr wrote:One thing that bugs me is the deadly accuracy of the guns. Isn't this supposed to be the old west? How come I can shoot 10 guys from over 100 yards away with 10 bullets in seconds.

Although the crows and vultures were damn scared!

It's supposed to be a movie. If it were a simulation, your gun would misfire 25% of the time and you'd be more likely to die from syphilis than mountain lion attack.macsomjrr wrote:One thing that bugs me is the deadly accuracy of the guns. Another round of fun last night, fellas...outside of getting slaughtered by the 'super-cowboys' on those first couple of games.
I'm loving the cover method, and I'm getting better at the dodge n roll to get out of lock on. Some of those guys last night really knew how to do that well.
I can tell already that it's going to take me a loooong time to do the SP portion of the game, because I'm so friggin' hooked on MP!

I'm blown away by how fun the free roaming is, and the random challenges. Even when not actually playing against somebody (I still have yet to do any of the competitive modes), just roaming the landscape and completing the ambient challenges has been awesome. Lawbringer, Sharpshooter, Hunter challenges, etc.
Now I have some that I'm going to try to complete which are Outlaw challenges---rack up a set bounty figure, stay alive for "X" minutes while the law chases you, etc.
I've spent more time in free roam just HUNTING than I care to admit. Stalking Cougars with a freaking Bowie Knife is nerve racking.

They're roughly the same, but since you can't skin, most of the "gather pelts" parts are gone.
The challenges change slightly, though.
****MINOR SPOILER****
Like when you have the challenge to shoot 5 birds from a moving train offline--that turns into shooting 5 birds from a moving vehicle online. So you just kill a couple of passers-by on a wagon, steal the wagon, and find some birds. Really basic changes. The cougar one was tough for me, though. Finding them, and then killing at least 1 of 5 with the knife proved problematic.
****END SPOILER****

Playing free-roam like this is essentially the same as playing the 1p game without access all of the story missions, right?TCrouch wrote:I'm blown away by how fun the free roaming is, and the random challenges. Plus the chance of random encounters and playing with friends.
