The new High on Fire, De Vermis Mysteriis, is full metal up your ass. Heavy as hell and wastes no time breaking down the door. The drums in particular just thump like 100,000 orcs marching in the rain.

I love watching these festival feeds (coachella & pitchfork fest in particular). I thought Pulp was very good last night - I never listened to them back in the day. Looking forward to Wild Flag tomorrow.

Saw Torche last week in Chapel Hill. It f*ckin' rocked. And holy crap was it LOUD.
Go see these guys if you get a chance. It's obvious after seeing them that their music was meant to be experienced live. Powerful stuff...

Anyone like Alex Clare? British songwriter, I guess he sounds like the Black Keys?

I hear a little more Jamiroquai than Black Keys. Either way I like "The Lateness of the Hour" quite a bit.fsquid wrote:Anyone like Alex Clare? British songwriter, I guess he sounds like the Black Keys?

Re: OT: New Music?
Some new stuff and one oldie-but-goodie I have been digging:
The Men, Open Your Heart. Puts the rock in indie rock. The opener "Turn It Around" is so in my wheelhouse it would be an automatic homer in The Show. What makes this a great album is that it keeps you off balance a little. They rage, they jam, they speed up, they stretch out. Like a great stew, all the ingredients--Buzzcocks, Replacements, SST bands, 90s college rock, Titus Andronicus, No Age--come together to make something unique and tasty.
Torche, Harmonicraft. It's good, but I was hoping for great. The really good stuff is really great, like "Kicking" or "Kiss Me Dudely" (song title of the year). The playing and the sound are also top notch. The songs just don't hold together as well as Meanderthal.
Ghost, Opus Eponymous. A tasteful tart of Satantic metal from 2010. For all the singing of sacrifice and slaughter, it has a wonderfully clean 80s metal sound. Plus the band plays in black cloaks while the singer dresses up like a lich bishop. What's not to love?
Marshall Crenshaw. eMusic had a power pop sale and I picked up Crenshaw's debut. I remember staying with my uncle when I was 12 and him trying so hard to convince me to listen to this instead of Pyromania. While I still love almost everything featuring a two-armed Rick Allen, I should have given this a listen. It's full of sunny hooks and perfect for the summer.

Re: OT: New Music?
I'm digging Sonny Landreth's new instrumental album, "Elemental Journey." Think of an Eric Johnson album with a bit less noodling and a bit more sludge and slide.
Guitar guys will enjoy this record, for sure.

Japandroids' latest, "Celebration Rock," is one hot, juicy slab of rock and roll. Excellent, exciting record.

LOVE these guys. Seen them live like 3-4 times. Always a great show. My vinyl copy should be arriving tomorrow.pk500 wrote:Japandroids' latest, "Celebration Rock," is one hot, juicy slab of rock and roll. Excellent, exciting record.

I usually don't go apeshit for an album after one listen, but this is a great rock record. I loved Post-Nothing and this is even better. They did a great job expanding their sound while still being themselves.pk500 wrote:Japandroids' latest, "Celebration Rock," is one hot, juicy slab of rock and roll. Excellent, exciting record.

Re: OT: New Music?
No doubt. The last album that gripped me like this from the first listen was F*cked Up's "David Comes to Life," which ended up as my favorite record of 2011.Brando70 wrote:I usually don't go apeshit for an album after one listen, but this is a great rock record. I've played it probably 3-4 times today. Blown away. Absolutely perfect album for the start of summer. I only wish I was out driving with the windows down and this blasting out of the speakers.pk500 wrote:No doubt. Re: OT: New Music?
Celebration Rock kind of reminds of a poppy Source Tags & Codes (Trail of Dead). I'm warming up to it.
I've found 2012 to be pretty lackluster for music so far. Maybe The Men & Cloud Nothings have been the most interesting so far, but nothing has been mind-blowing.

Re: OT: New Music?
Patti Smith's new record, "Banga," is compelling and strong. Few artists continue to be relevant into their fifth decade of recording; even fewer are this smart and this good.

Re: OT: New Music?
This isn't a new music but...
Songza for the iPhone (Andriod?) is a nice little app to discover new music. Basically it's a bunch of playlists crafted to a certain time of day, mood, event, activity, holiday etc. I've discovered more stuff I like with this app than other music apps in a long time.
It's different from Pandora in the since it doesn't group by sounds. These are created playlists by people, bloggers, music sites etc.

Re: OT: New Music?
I really like the new Rush album, Clockwork Angels. It won't be mistaken for 2112 or Hemispheres, but it's the most progressive record they have done in 30 years. Some incredible playing and I love the overall flow of the album.
Re: OT: New Music?
Yeah, the new Rush album is really good. I'm also enjoying the new Smashing Pumpkins, which has been streaming on iTunes.
Re: OT: New Music?
Yes! New Smashing Pumpkins is a great surprise. I had completely written them off. I think the album is pretty exceptional actually. Tracks 2 & 7 are more than noteworthy.

Re: OT: New Music?
I like the new Rush as well.
The two things I've played the most of late are the new Witch Mountain album, Cauldron Of The Wild, which I would shorthand as Heart meets Black Sabbath (full disclosure - I'm good friends with the drummer), and the Neneh Cherry & The Thing record The Cherry Thing which comes out tomorrow. The Thing are a Nordic free jazz trio and Neneh does her speak-song thing. It's streaming at NPR if anyone is interested.
