do you have to install games on PS4 or can you play them from the disc? Is XBO going to be the same where you have to install the game?

Glad I got one for the family for the holidays, but last night felt more like an errand than anything else.
Despite not picking up a ps4 I feel the same way about next gen. For some reason i'm thinking the dissapointment may outweigh the excitiment. It's just a video game machine and I'll grab one or both of the new consoles eventually but unlike the last next gen launch I feel zero urgency to do so.

I enjoy reading the impressions, but I'm in the same boat. When the last system launched, I didn't have kids and I was in my mid-20. Now that I have two, a house, and I'm 33, I can't justify it when I know they will be cheaper in a year or so. Plus, next black monday they'll run some silly bundle deal too.
Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
That's one thing that sucks about next gen is the forced installs on both systems. I thought that just applied to the XONE because of the DRM and when they did a 180 I thought you can just play it from the disc.
Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
I think you still have to have the disc in for authentication?
Anyways, it should be faster and quieter off the hard drive..
Some people are even putting SSDs into their PS4s.
Mine's out for delivery but really can't do anything with it until after work so I can only read impressions for now ...

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
I looked into that, but the cost of doing so is basically like buying a 2nd PS4 (assuming you get a SSD > 500gb). The better option to me is getting a replacement 2.5inch drive at around 1TB that runs at 7200rpm instead of the slow ass 5400 they included. You can do that for around 90 bucks and you double your storage space. I've been contemplating that for the past few days. LOL.wco81 wrote:Some people are even putting SSDs into their PS4s.
Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
Word. Will definitely be getting a bigger capacity 7200rpm drive whenever I get my PS4 (probably the Second Son Bundle they announced).dbdynsty25 wrote: I looked into that, but the cost of doing so is basically like buying a 2nd PS4 (assuming you get a SSD > 500gb). I do find it funny that 10 years ago the advantages of consoles over PCs were that you didn't have to deal with patches or lengthy game installations.

Question for the lucky folks with PS4s;
- when you download a game do you have to do the stupid PS3 thing of INSTALLING IT after downloading it? Or does it just download and install automatically in one step (like on 360)?
Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
The idea of an SSD in a console sounds great. But like DB said, I don't think I would want to pay for it.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
I've got a 250gb SSD in my PS3 (the one I took out of my desktop when I went 500gb SSD) and while improving load times a little bit, it's not really worth the price of adding one IMO. 1TB 7200rpm for 90 bucks is much more effective I think.bdunn13 wrote:The idea of an SSD in a console sounds great. Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
Picked up my PS4 preorder at BB at 11am. (I thought I ordered it shipped, but actually was store pickup.)
Store was quiet. Only about 3 people on line for store pickup. I saw a bunch of PS4s and games set aside behind the counter for preorders, but no consoles were left for walk ins.
Still planning on trying to sell it. Have to resist the urge unbox and play. Helps that I bought no games.
A friend of mine got a defective unit. Powers on but no video output.

I'm going to wait, too, for so many reasons.fsquid wrote:I enjoy reading the impressions, but I'm in the same boat. When the last system launched, I didn't have kids and I was in my mid-20. 1. I never keep a previous-gen system when I buy a new system. I sell the old one to help subsidize the purchase of the new rig. And there are still SO many games I enjoy playing on the 360 that I would lose if I bought a PS4 or One, such as GTA V, NHL 14, Tiger Woods 14, F1 2013, Assassin's Creed II and III, etc., etc.
2. Uninspiring launch lineups. There is nothing in either launch lineup that excites me other than Forza 5.
3. Eventual system bugs or hardware flaws. Every system has them. I'd rather first adopters be used as guinea pigs instead of me.
4. Price. The price will drop on these rigs by Black Friday 2014, if not sooner.
5. Indecision. I'm still on the fence about which system to get. I'm not as married into XBL because I don't game online nearly as much as in the past. Part of it is time; part is the balkanization of DSP. There are so few online games that we play in large groups for very long after the new-game smell evaporates. Part of me is intrigued by the possibilities of Kinect and the home entertainment hub aspects of the One. Another part of me says I just want a gaming machine, and I think the PS4 might be the better package for that specific task. I'm going to read impressions from here and other sources I trust to form a future strategy.
6. Priorities. I'm 48 years old. I work 60 hours per week. I have two teen-agers and an 8-year-old who have sports, school and social lives that are very busy. My priorities are not with gaming anymore.

Leebo/sportsdan....
Any further impressions of FIFA? Do you think the next-gen version would be enjoyable to someone who's never really loved FIFA before? I've always gravitated towards PES based on the way it controlled and variety in opposition AI. From what I've played in the past, the midfield play in FIFA is great, but I struggled to enjoy the rest.

Picked up my preorder. Waited about 5 minutes for my turn as the store had a midnight opening already. I was just supposed to pick up the hardware when a BB salesman asks me if I was interested in a bundle, which I quickly said No.
But I took his literature while I was waiting and realized that a 3 year total coverage for the hardware and controller was included.
I usually don't buy insurance for that, but after reading it further I thought it was a good deal. The bundle included 2 games of my choice (could exchange it for a camera or controller) and an extra controller for $635.
So I did my math quickly and I realized that for some peace of mind, a $35 charge for any hardware deficiency for the next 3 years was well worth it considering that this is a first generation machine.
So I picked up NFS and the second game I exchanged it for the camera. The only game that was sold out was NBA, which was my original choice but they told me that I could exchange Rivals in a week when they get more copies of NBA.
Heard some people that wanted the PS4 without preordering but no luck for them.
I'll just be doing the update when I get home as we start holidays tomorrow. Killzone and Rivals will have to wait two weeks.
PSN id is still 'xeneixe'.

I haven't had enough time with it. The CPU A.I. still has the tendency to attack moreso than be patient. I will say it's a heck of a lot more organic than I ever seen it play. The CPU has a human feel to it. I think I'm more impressed with it than Leebo perhaps. It's incredibly smooth and resposnsive, and the game just flows extremely nice. This is the first EA Sports game I've played in a while that doesn't have that herky jerkyness to it with regards to quick cut aways and cut scenes. Once I play a bit more today with different teams, I'll be better at answering your questions.fanatic wrote:Leebo/sportsdan....

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
Surprisingly I'm hearing pretty positive impressions. Now, that could be from the pro Madden crowd, but I've read a couple impressions in which people were not happy after watching the live streams. And they came away happy after actually playing the game. I waffled again with my third game and traded it back in for Madden 25. So, I'll get to playing it here very soon. I didn't necessarily have a problem with the PS3 version. It just felt dated, and I think the slightly improved graphics will help it look a little fresher.Inuyasha wrote:Any Madden impressions? Hey, thanks. From what I saw at the demo booth, the flow does indeed look great. Very smooth. Look forward to future impressions...sportdan30 wrote:I haven't had enough time with it. Yeah, hearing a bunch of the same. I sold my 360 version in anticipation of getting it for the next gen. Too bad Amazon is out of NBA 2K14 for the PS4. I'll skip Madden for now as I still have the 360 version and i'm bored with the series. I'll give it a try next year.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
I don't like to recommend anything to anybody anymore, but the people that are saying Madden looks the same don't have eyes.
I put my 360 on one TV, and the PS4 on an identical TV side by side, and the differences are staggering. It looks like going from the Xbox to the XBox 360 in terms of clarity. Try to read the player names on the backs of jerseys from the default camera angle. No way you can on 360, and on PS4 it's pretty easy. The lighting is ridiculous, and the textures are twice as good (at least). It seriously looks like going from Standard Definition to HD. My wife sat next to me and watched both games, and it was easy for HER to tell, which isn't always the case.
What made it more interesting is that I put both games on CPU vs. CPU. I watched RG3 throw the ball into the dirt 5 feet in front of him on XBox, and RG3 act like he had no idea how to run an offense. I hadn't done CPU vs. CPU before, but I figured it was a good test for AI. On 360, after one half, Seattle @ Washington, Washington led 3-0 on a turnover. After one half on PS4, Washington led 17-14 with about 150 offensive yards apiece.
Granted, it's the smallest of sample sizes, but my early impressions are this: it's exactly what I wanted from it. My Oakland offensive line got annihilated against the Colts, as they had something like 7 or 8 sacks. I started getting happy feet to avoid the rush, but on replays especially, none of it was canned. Guys were just getting beaten to a pulp by DE's and DT's with 4 man rushes. Then in a game of the Seattle vs. Washington, I noticed Wilson had about 7 seconds to throw. I backed it up to replay and saw they rushed 2 and dropped 9, and it had 5 offensive linemen blocking 2 guys. Pancakes and smothering blocking, and Wilson had to hold the ball forever waiting for somebody to come open against 9 men in coverage. He eventually threw a sideline route that was deflected, for those who are wondering.
In my first game against the Jets, I won 10-9 and didn't exactly light up the scoreboard. As I played games I got used to the new blocking, and the complaints about the RB 'stutter step' are valid. It takes getting used to, but they only do that if you mash your turbo and run into the back of a blocker. It's the RB thinking how to get around something. Any time I see that, it means I need to slow it down and put a little more thought into my runs.
Bottom line, it's exactly what I hoped it would be. I haven't been suction blocked in 5 games so far, and I have seen CPU teammates (and opponents) play zone much better in handing assignments off...and also get beaten in man to man without help (Heyward-Bey got over the top for an 83 yard pass from Luck when I left no safety help). I've been torched on seam routes from Luck to Allen when I tried to single him with a LB, etc. I haven't seen one thing that made me scratch my head going "ehhhhh that's kinda weak", but mostly what I've been watching is the OL and DL. The worst part about the game are the somewhat janky animations because it seems to be running so fast. But it looks vastly improved in the crowd (and they get loud on big plays and boo the home team if they're losing, etc). And on the field, I haven't had a problem with it yet...in a grand total of 5 games, at least.
