They got worked for 2 periods. If they take more dumb penalties they won't steal this one.

Re: Hockey Night In DSP 2016-2017
Wow. Absolutely stole it. Calgary has played too well to be down 3-0.
Re: Hockey Night In DSP 2016-2017
The PP was clicking for the home team like a Swiss watch. The dumb penalties belonged to the Ducks tonight just as CAL was committing them in ANA. Then came in Bernier. B. Elliot who's been stellar for CAL during the latter part of the season had a couple of softies, the high stick that should have been called and this team got to be deflated in confidence. Don't know what happened to their faceoff guys in the third period but you could tell that ANA never panicked and kept quacking.
Re: Hockey Night In DSP 2016-2017
Looks like the bill came due for the Hawks for spending too much of their cap space on 88 & 19 and failing to address the decline of the squad around their core. They can't play dump & chase with the more physical Preds and couldn't handle them even when scoring early and forcing them to play the Hawks' game. At 2-0 in the game Nashville had to open up, commit the D in the attacking zone which mitigated their neutral zone play and the Hawks STILL couldn't generate consistent pressure the way they should have.

What an awesome night of hockey... was pulling for Elliott in Calgary. Always good seeing the Blackhawks lose.

No, that would be the NBA, as much as I love it. Franchises openly tank games to either rest stars for the playoffs or get a better chance in the draft lottery. That doesn't happen in the NHL.RobVarak wrote:The only bright side is yet another data point for those of us who declare the NHL regular season to be the least relevant regular season in all of professional sports.

This is certainly a tightening race to the bottom. OTOH, the NBA post-season is generally the strictest meritocracy in sports. 8's rarely beat 1's etc., so your record in the regular season still does generally reflect how you'll do in the post-season. Not so in hockey, partly because of the much, much higher level of randomness and partly because the game is played and officiated so differently.pk500 wrote:No, that would be the NBA, as much as I love it. Really not much to talk about when your team is pissing down its leg. Even when they were up 2-0 last night I knew they would give up that lead, I have no faith in Crawford. I know he made some great saves but I never feel like he is going to lock down a lead.
To me seems like the Preds want it more and they are certainly quicker, the Hawks don't look hungry at all and make some of the dumbest plays in their own end. Well only a few months to the Bears....

Re: Hockey Night In DSP 2016-2017
In terms of the possibility of random/undeserving teams winning (which isn't exactly Rob's point), I still say it's 1 game eliminations in football, or a baseball team possibly being eliminated in 3 or 4 games after 162 regular game season and possibly seeing their best player only appear in 1 game. Also, those playoffs are played in weather conditions that are different than most of the regular season and it tangibly effects play.
I'm not gonna defend how referees swallow their whistles in NHL playoffs though. "Letting them play" is actually "letting them cheat." Also, hockey is just a different from other sports in that added intensity can really change the game (harder to score mainly), whereas more intensity doesn't really change the way a baseball or football game plays out on a fundamental level.
Regarding this year specifically, I don't know how this Hawks team managed so many regular season points. Their roster isn't nearly as good as their previous cup winners, and so many pundits casually putting them to the finals were being blinded by mystical values of "experience", "star power" and "leadership", IMO.

I will echo the Preds looked really fast last night and really hitting the Hawks all over the place and beating them to pucks. As a Blues fan, playing them right now is scary to think about.Danimal wrote:Really not much to talk about when your team is pissing down its leg. I do think that was goalie interference though.. but nobody, even the NBCNHL guys had no idea the real meaning of that rule. I guess they determined it was incidental contact, but Crawford's stick was definitely whacked and he was bumped. Still, allowing only 2 Hawks goals in 3 games is quite a feat.

Re: Hockey Night In DSP 2016-2017
Unlike previous years, the West has been rather inconsistent and weaker than the East this season in my opinion. No team in the West was able to sustain some kind of consistency in their play for long stretches, partly due to injuries or players underperforming. There was way more drama in the East during the last week of the season in determining who would make it to the dance, teams like NYI and TPA made a strong push while the Hawks just coasted again in a conference where it lacked consistency.Naples39 wrote:Regarding this year specifically, I don't know how this Hawks team managed so many regular season points. Preds just looked more physical and determined especially in OT.

I don't know he was out of the crease, idk the rule well enough to let it bother me. the other goal bothered me more, Crawford stands up and looks behind him thinking it is out of play. Stay in position until the whistle is blown, that's the kind of lazy s*** the Hawks do.MizzouRah wrote: I do think that was goalie interference though.. but nobody, even the NBCNHL guys had no idea the real meaning of that rule. Most of the games in every series have been entertaining. NHL Playoffs are my favorite sit on the couch for 7 hours viewing.

Best goal horn EVER!!! It's sad that I will not be getting my Blues vs Hawks series for round 2. So many of my favorite players are seen in the video above. Hull, Chellios, Roenick, Belfour, Cujo. I used to aspire to be an Nhl goalie, and it didn't get any better than Cujo or Eddie the eagle. I LOVE that mask Cujo wears. Really liked it when Elliott had one made to look like it last year sometime. I hope the Blues can make a run, but they are getting by on out of this world goalie play. If Allen comes down to earth I don't know if they can score enough goals to win a 5-4 game. Nashville vs Stl seems probable?

Regular season and post season are night and day. Just make the playoffs.
As for the game....I was very disappointed in the way the Hawks handled the lead. Maybe I was turning a blind eye to how old and slow they look all three games but I thought they were back in the series...As a fan of many of the players that was sad to watch.

Seeing Hossa work so hard with so little product is tough for me, but understandable. Watching Toews absolutely destroyed physically is a little more puzzling. As for Keith, he's a man on an island. The rest of the top 6 defenders are all just terrible.XXXIV wrote:.As a fan of many of the players that was sad to watch.

I read though the rule.. out of the crease does not matter.. and I thought it did. You must always avoid contact with the goalie unless it's incidental, even if he's out of his crease.. which still makes no sense to me.Danimal wrote:

Anyway... just like any other sport, the officiating does seem to be magnified in the playoffs due to how many games hinge or a specific call or two.

Re: Hockey Night In DSP 2016-2017
Gotta give Rangers credit. They showed up tonight.
Weber you are the king of the goal post strike. So close to tying it late.
Aside from tonight's 2nd period...Habs keep playing same way they have all series. they should advance.

Toews looks like a shell of himself to me. Nothing there. Playing older than Hossa. Maybe one too many head shots absorbed.RobVarak wrote:Seeing Hossa work so hard with so little product is tough for me, but understandable. I have him seen him play enough recently to judge, but there is a precedent for the physical, gutsy, 2-way leader to age prematurely. Look at what happened to Mike Richards and Dustin Brown. These are cup winners and heart-and-soul captain types whose play fell off a cliff at about 29/30.XXXIV wrote:Toews looks like a shell of himself to me. Nothing there. Playing older than Hossa. Toews is 28. Toews was always a little higher end offensively though and hopefully he can avoid it.

As a huge JR fan, it bugs me seeing Odouya wearing #27. Why the hell haven't the Hawks retired #27 yet?
Re: Hockey Night In DSP 2016-2017
At some point in the 2nd period the Rangers turned tonight's game and the run of play this series completely around.
Hopefully Habs can find their way again.
Price has been good this series. He needs to be better than good in OT.
I know the Rangers have sucked at MSG but dont want go there down 3-2.

Don't know how many more chances Rangers are going to get in this OT, but they better capitalize soon or it'll back fire quickly.

Habs weak on the puck for a while.
and of course a lucky bounce.
Disgusting.
the way habs played the last half of game an OT they got what they deserved.
