So more of the same....sigh
That's a bummer for all GT fans. I'm being sincere!
What gets me is the link backbreaker gave us that showed the AI improved was comments from 2 years ago when someone was playing GT5 Prologue.
They must have improved it in 2 years time then, they have probably nailed it and better than gp4.

I just looked at gamestop's website this morning and saw it is being "shipped" on the 24th. I was hoping it would be in stores on Wednesday, so that I wouldn't have to venture out on Friday to grab it. I'll still do a little calling around before I leave the office on Wednesday to see if anyone has it, in which case I'll get it then.

I guess reality is starting to set in already with those that saw the Gamespot one hour long gameplay video.
http://www.gamespot.com/shows/now-playi ... ot;title;1

Some of the comments: (Trust me I was being objective, there isn't a lot of love for GT5)

"Looks boring...still going to purchase to see if the experience is different. Will be my first GT."
-----------------------------------------------------------
"What the hell are this graphics? I thougth they were going to be expectacular jugjing from the trailers!
THAM THAM THAM!!! Gran turismo had me for the tird time since gran turismo 3! "
-----------------------------------------------------------
"That really didn't look impressive to me, tracks looked bland, lots of aliasing on the cars, and the lighting was very basic and nothing like what I was led to believe it would look like. I haven't finished watching the video yet but that Go-Cart race looked particularly bad, If it's not deep and there're only a few Go-Cart tracks, then what is it doing in a GT game? Also the menus look horrible.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I know it's hard to judge the physics off a video, but the man playing it said himself that bouncing off cars was an effective strategy, try doing that in real life and see where that gets you... just for PK..

To me this looks like GT4 in HD with lots of half-assed features added to it no one will like."
-----------------------------------------------------------
"finally a racing game with clear and well defined graphics can't wait to play it"
-----------------------------------------------------------
"This makes me sad, but, I'm am not at all impressed with this game. What have they been doing for five years? I would much rather have had interior and damage models for all cars over having Nascar and go-carts. You have blu-ray, unlimited funds, and 5+ years; use it. Ground textures look very sub-par. I've been a huge GT fan since 2, but I'm finding myself disappointed the more I see. I hope I'm wrong though!"
-----------------------------------------------------------
"replays look amazing, graphics are looking good"
-----------------------------------------------------------
"okay, hate me if you want but to be honest, the game looks not that good, when you compare it to Forza, this looks no better. There are pop-ups (notice the tents during Go Kart section), what they say about the shadow and the track are right, and the trees look particularly awful comparing to other models."
-----------------------------------------------------------
"looks awesome!"
-----------------------------------------------------------
"theres some downers but i know its still going to be a great game. im going to guess it get a 9"
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Im sorry, but as a hardcore ps3 fanboy i must say, im not impressed, the textures and detail on the background and boring and bland as hell!. 4 (+) years and 800 of the cars have no cockpit views? and even after a 45 minute install there are still some bad load times....i hoped for this to be better say i could say crew u xbots Forza aint got nothing on GT5, but after this....im just going to wait and see the sales figures."

According to Eurogamer.net you have to unlock online mode via a day 1 patch. Don't know if it applies to us here in the US as well.

Lots of talk about damage, or lack thereof. It's to the point of

- it's unlocked at level 20
- hmm, I'm at level 20 and it's not there. Oh wait. It's level 40 now?
- tweet from PD that damage is unlocked "later" (mythical level 500 or a patch?)
- GTers claiming slowly bringing damage in is the right way; damage should be reserved for when you've learned to drive well (I say WTF? Dumbest thing I've heard)

Granted it's not officially out yet, but from all the impressions and videos, this thing just looks like a train wreck.

Thanks F308, it's like others have said what were these guys doing the last 5 years?

The standard cars were transfered from GT4, I read cars in Nascar don't have cockpit view unless you're in the Pits, can you confirm this? GT5 is quickly shaping up to be delivered in BETA form.

Played the new demo at my Gamestop last night while my buddy was closing up the store (their copies of the full game are in by the way).

Physics weren't horrible, but certainly leaned towards the arcade side.

AI is dumb as bricks.

And of course it defaults to gas and brake being buttons, not analog triggers. Because, you know, gas and brake are on/off switches, right?

5 years and all they did was slap lipstick on a pig.

So wait, they should drop the formula which has resulted in tens of millions of copies sold and instead, try to be more like these little PC sims which have sold a fraction of the copies?

They've obviously put their time and money into a higher level of modeling and course detail than any other car game in the market and obviously a lot of people are drawn to that even if the enthusiasts aren't.

Plus, when has AI of any console game been good enough? Either it's dumb and scripted or it cheats, rarely a balance between those extremes.

IMO the reason this rinse, repeat formula has worked so well in the past is because there was no Forza and the PS2 was so dominant. Forza 2 clearly did things better than GT. Forza 3 has done it even better and is a gorgeous looking game to boot. The AI while not perfect in Forza 3 is clearly better than what's in Gran Turismo. And there are other console racing games like Grid and other Codemaster games that have better AI.

This game has been stuck in neutral since the original GT to use a racing metaphor. Clearly after 5 years this appears to be a half assed effort.

I'm starting to re-think a day 1 purchase myself -- maybe just make it another Backbreaker/NBA2k11 weekend.

If you've never played a GT game before then get it. It will be a new experience for you. I've bought and played everyone and that's why some of us are so critical of the game.

Come on, that's like saying Medal of Honor should have gone back to using the face buttons to control the gun because the original Medal of Honor PS1 games sold millions of copies.

Times change, standards improve. Gran Turismo's AI looks to be at least a generation (probably 2) behind its console competition--Forza and anything by Codemasters. I don't play PC sims, so I can't make that comparison. The landscape has changed dramatically from GT4 and we'll see what the reviewers and consumers think soon enough.

Polyphony Digital has the right to spend their time however they see fit, and as you said, it has worked for them. But personally, what drives me crazy is the "holier than thou" attitude they take towards being the Ultimate this or that, which trickles down to the GT fanboys that slurp whatever the PD crew dishes them.

Thankfully this forum doesn't have fanboys shouting down anyone who dares suggest that Forza or any other driving game compares to their beloved Gran Turismo. But holy crap, wading through any GT thread at a blog can be painful.

Mine shipped from Gamefly so I can at least check it out. Seems like a perfect rental for me, and if I really like it I can use the keep it now feature.

Mine too...thank god I don't have to buy it without getting to try it first. I simply love KEEP IT on Gamefly. Even if I do like it then the game is only like 45 bucks. Can't beat it. Makes it worth the subscription fees alone.

Yeah, that is a great feature. Heads up, Gamefly is having a sale through Monday where you get $10 off of any keep it now game over $30. GT5 for $35 is not too shabby. I'm hoping mine gets here in time. You should have no problem with that.

Yeah, that's awesome...mine will be here tomorrow. I always get Gamefly games on the release date.

Is there some sort of coupon or code you need to get the $10 off because I can't see anything on their site. I'll probably end up keeping Need for Speed if you're not limited to one "keep it" transaction.

Remember, you can also combine your $10 discount with any available GameFly Rewards coupons or discounts.

Happy Shopping,
