I like Race, but to be honest not as much as GTR2. It is neat to have some different classes of cars (the Radicals are a hoot!), but I agree that they feel a bit grippy.

Plus I find the interface a lot worse than their other games. It's a bit confusing, and I prefer having the tabs available when setting up races instead of the "continue" button.

It does run perfectly on my machine, smooth as glass with everything turned up, and it looks great.

I did see some early AI pile-ups, but I think that was due to the constrained track I was on when it happened, while racing at Brands Hatch they were fine. I sucked, but they were fine...

Anyway, I'll certainly give it more time, and I'm sure it will be fun for quite a while as a change of pace from my other games.

Rodster wrote:PK don't forget Simbin is not the same group of guys that made GTR and GTR2. Those guys sold out to the new developer who bought the rights to the Simbin name and I believe the GTR franchise although i'm not 100% sure on that one. The original guys who formed Simbin have formed a new company called Blimey.

So if the RACE game seems a little to easy as opposed to rFactor and GTR that's because i's made by a different group of cats that bought the name Simbin. Still RACE is a pretty decent game in it's own right. I still prefer GTR2 and rFactor over RACE.
Agreed, Rodster. I raced GTR 2 offline tonight for the first time in a LONG time after our online rFactor race, and it was really, really fun. What a superb driving model, as both GTR 2 and rFactor are superior to RACE 07, in my opinion.

Take care,
PK

I have the GTR2 modified physics and those cars become a handful with the new physics mods. It was the answer for those who thought the GTR2 cars were too easy to drive.

If your interested let me know and i'll send you the files.

Rod:

Thanks for the offer. I'll pass for now, as I'm still very entertained and challenged by the stock GTR 2 physics. I've read where they're easier than the GTR physics, but that's OK with me.

GTR 2's physics compare well with rFactor, so it's still a fun challenge for me. If GTR was much harder, man, that game must have been in the Grand Prix Legends-Richard Burns Rally league in terms of difficulty.

I fired up Burns last night for the first time in about six weeks, and Lord, that game is tough. Rewarding, but tough as hell.

Take care,
PK

PK, what's RBR like with a wheel? I've owned it for years but on the XBox, so I've never once played it with anything other than a Controller S - it's wonderful even with that, but I'm tempted to grab it for PC. I assume there's a decent mod community for it too?

With a wheel on PC it is insane. Very hard to get used to at first how much you'll be sawing at the wheel. But it's realistic and gives you a great feel for what the actual drivers go through. It certainly gives creedence to the phrase "you have to go slow to go fast".

I haven't found too many mods for it myself. A few new cars seems to be about it. No new tracks or stages.

Still, well worth it.

PK that was debated at length and Blimey and the press came to the conclusion that GTR2 has the more advanced physics. What made the cars somewhat difficult to drive in GTR was that the cars had a tendency of abruptly loosing grip from the rear wheels and there by the rear end would let go and you'd spin.

For it's time GTR was bleeding edge but playing both games GTR2 takes it and the new modified physics enhance GTR2 even further.

I still have GTR but would not install it because of Starforce and it killing one of my hard drives and cd burner.

I never touched GTR or GT Legends for the same reason, Rod. Never will, either.

I've had no problems with GT Legends as far as protection systems go. And it is really a cool game. Trust me PK, you'd like it!

Besides, there are probably files out there that avoid the need for Starforce. I know I'm running GTR2 without the CD in.

There will soon be no need for GT Legends if you have GTR 2 as the Power and Glory Mod for GTR 2 is basically converting all the classic cars from GT Legends in their true 1960s/1970s state, as opposed to GT Legends which simulates the actual FIA Historics championship with various modifications and improvements like better tyres, rollbars with much more chassis stiffness, stiffer suspension, etc.

Great review of this mod on SimHQ:

I just tried the v1.01 release of this mod last night and it is fantastic.

It too risky. I've been burned by Starforce as well as countless others.

http://www.glop.org/starforce/

The are ways to disable Starforce but it has to be installed first in order to disable it. GTR2 doesn't use Starforce and i'm also using a no cd crack for the game. The bottom line is both Simbin and Ubisoft dropped Startforce because of lawsuits and complaints heading their way by computer users who've been effected by Starforce.

Additional info on the Power and Glory Mod for GTR 2:
Installing the mod requires a copy of GTR2 which then acts as the hosting engine for the mod. It also requires a copy of GT Legends which does not necessarily need to be installed on your system, but is used by the installer as a way of making sure that you do own a copy of GTL.

Those concerned with the copy-protection inherent in GT Legends need not worry. As development team member Aristotelis Vasilakos posted recently in the SimHQ Racing Simulations Forum:

"...you only need the CDROM or DVD of GTLegends. Not the game installed (so no Starforce installation)."

Has anyone tried this BMW WTCC mod for GTR 2?

http://www.nogripracing.com/details.php?filenr=3154

I could have sworn I found a RACE conversion to GTR 2 last night, too. But maybe that was hallucinations due to lack of sleep.

Man, there are a buttload of mods for GTR 2. Can any of you experienced sim racing cats recommend some good ones?

I've met very few mods that I didn't like, as you know. :)

Thanks!

PK I have the BMW WTCC 2006 mod. It's ok but nothing special. There are only 12 cars in the mod. Engine sounds are not as vibrant as in RACE 07. I give the nod to RACE in this category.

I can give you some suggestions for mods but I don't have links for them, but most of them came from nogrip.com

1) Porsche Supercup 2006
2) V8 Supercars
3) Mosler MT900R Mod
4) Audi RS4 Mod
5) BMW Challenge
6) British GT
7) DTM Mod
8 ) FIA GT 2006 Mod
9) Lotus Exige R-GT Mod
10) Prototypes 2000-2004 Mod
11) Porsche Carrera Cup 2006
12) GTSEC Mod with Tracks
13) GTR4WD Turbo Mod
14) SpeedGT Mod
15) 2006 WTCC BMW Mod

I think that's all I have.

I love GTR2 (see avatar), but I do not think the current mods for GTR 2 outside of the previously mentioned Power and Glory mod (see above) hold a candle to the mods for rFactor. Of course rFactor has been out longer and since it was made to be modded, caters to that community. The only one in Rodsters list that I have found worth keeping is the British GT mod.

While NoGrip provides a good source for GTR2 mods and tracks, it would be great to have a rfactorcentral type source for GTR2 stuff. It's actually harder to keep track of the good stuff for GTR2.

PK I think I have actually seen an illegal, but relatively easy to find Race conversion for rFactor. I think it is the original Race, not Race 07. I will send you a PM if I come across it.

Thanks, Don. No hurry.

I'm reinstalling RACE 07, as I think I may have been a bit hasty to dismiss it. I think a bit of tweaking to the force feedback settings might help my lack of tactile feel and weight with the cars. Plus I really dig the WTCC and want to drive in a season.

Take care,

Question for you cats. Does the WTCC use anti lock brakes and traction control? I don't know much about the series.

My favorite mod for GTR2 is the V8 Supercars. I am working through a season with them and having a complete blast. You have to snag all of the tracks for the series, but they are all available online. I think I got mine from Racesimcentral.

The PCC mod is also good, as well as the Mazda MX-5 cup which are fun to throw around the track. I did a race at Long Beach '79 in them that was a hoot.

I prefer GTR2 and it's mods mainly because the AI seems much better than rFactors to me. A lot of that seems to be based on the mod, but I do seem to get rear ended in rFactor much more often than GTR2. It's like the AI reacts faster in GTR.

I hope to download and try the Power and Glory mod tonight.

Yeah rFactor has pretty crapy AI no question. It wasn't too bad with v1.150 but it went downhill with v1.250. In fact i'm still using v1.150 just because of that reason.

I gave RACE 07 another go, and it's still no-go, for two reasons.

One, the game just isn't grabbing me, even after wheel adjustments. It's providing me nothing that rFactor and GTR 2 already are giving me.

Two, the game runs at barely acceptable framerates (28-30 fps) with all details on low. It's just about too much for my system to handle.

No worries. I gave it two tries and will stick with rFactor and GTR 2 for my road-racing jones.

Take care,
PK

Isn't the AI for rFactor coded into each mod through an AIW file for each mod? If so, then what does the game's base version have to do with the AI?

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Apologies if you're still running the stock ISI classes that come with the game. I didn't think anyone did that! :)
