Re: OT: New Music?
Slumberland - finally got a chance to listen to the album last night and I must say, "huzzah!" A whole lot of fun. It'll take a few spins to have any actual thoughts beyond "I like it", but you earned the extra spins that my grumpy self is more and more loathe to give these days.
Re: OT: New Music?
Look forward to seeing this on the Grammy's:
"Bob Dylan and Dr. Dre are the latest music icons to join the lineup of performers at Sunday's Grammy Awards telecast in Los Angeles. Dylan is set to join Mumford & Sons and the Avett Brothers for a three-song suite of folk rock numbers."

Finally got around to listening to your record tonight, and it is really good! Enjoyed it quite a bit, and it will get regular spins here.
I pimped it on Facebook and Twitter, too. A really cool listen!

Re: OT: New Music?
Always great to hear new Mogwai, and on my first listen this morning it sounds like the new "Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will" is excellent.
Re: OT: New Music?
Great to hear this:
"The British folk rock group Mumford & Sons also saw a significant boost in digital sales after their performance with Bob Dylan and the Avett Brothers. According to their American label Glassnote Entertainment, sales of the band's album Sigh No More increased significantly, pushing it to the top of both iTunes and Amazon's digital album charts."

And this, if you're a Radiohead fan:
"Radiohead announced on their website today that they will release the digital version of their eighth album The King of Limbs this weekend. The album can be pre-ordered on their site in both digital and physical formats, but either way a download of the album will be made available on Saturday."

Re: OT: New Music?
Well, Radiohead has released a new album and I wanted to come in here and say how I just don't get their popularity. I wanted to but after listening to The King of Limbs I have nothing but good things to say about it. I might have to listen to some of the older stuff and see if I like it now. I really am shocked at this development.

Re: OT: New Music?
I'm still sailing in the same "I don't get it" ship about Radiohead, which I think is a poor man's Pink Floyd. Maybe this record will change my mind like it did yours, Scoop.ScoopBrady wrote:Well, Radiohead has released a new album and I wanted to come in here and say how I just don't get their popularity. One album I'm digging is the new release from one of my favorite bands, Drive-By Truckers. "Go Go Boots" is strong from start to finish, easily the best of the band's three records since Jason Isbell left in 2007. A superb record from one of America's best pure rock bands.

Scoop, this is kind of a funny album for you to jump on board with Radiohead. I'm a Radiohead fan, and I like it, but I'm still trying to process it.pk500 wrote:ScoopBrady wrote:Well, Radiohead has released a new album and I wanted to come in here and say how I just don't get their popularity. On first listen, it's dense, moody, and kind of inaccessible. In my mind, it sounds like what non-Radiohead fans envision Radiohead sounding like, lol.
Re: OT: New Music?
I really liked OK Computer and The Bends, but I got off the Radiohead train when they really started going experimental, to the point where I don't even bother with their albums anymore. Reminds me of when U2 got away from BAD-style music in favor of electronic crap in the 90s. That kind of music is great for critics I guess but I never find myself in a mood where I want to give it a listen. I'd rather see a band stick to what it does best.
Re: OT: New Music?
Thanks for the heads up. Didn't realize they released a new one. Downloaded it, and just gave it a listen over lunch - lots of good stuff on there.pk500 wrote:One album I'm digging is the new release from one of my favorite bands, Drive-By Truckers. Another head's up, fanatic: Former DBT guitarist and vocalist Jason Isbell will release his third solo album in early April. Isbell's first two solo records were very, very good.fanatic wrote:Thanks for the heads up. Didn't realize they released a new one. Re: OT: New Music?
I bailed on radiohead around Kid A. I still check out every release, but it's just not my bag. I def dig how they operate with regards to the record industry & the media. You never know when the next release will be out & how. Good stuff.

Re: OT: New Music?
I'm not a big Radiohead fan, but I think The Bends, Ok Computer, and Kid A deserve the accolades they got. The Bends shows off their rock side, Ok Computer blends that with their eclectic side, and Kid A was just beautiful and weird.
Re: OT: New Music?
Nice, thanks...This music has almost got me forgetting that it's -15C and snowing outside...almost.pk500 wrote:Another head's up, fanatic: Former DBT guitarist and vocalist Jason Isbell will release his third solo album in early April. Isbell's first two solo records were very, very good.
I've been a pretty big fan from the start, but yeah, after Kid A I would have to convince myself for a few days that I liked each new album. The feeling of disappointment (and longing for another Bends/OK Computer) never really fades.Brando70 wrote:I'm not a big Radiohead fan, but I think The Bends, Ok Computer, and Kid A deserve the accolades they got. I totally felt this way around Amnesiac, and then I just started to appreciate the music for what it was as opposed to hoping for OK Computer II.fanatic wrote:I've been a pretty big fan from the start, but yeah, after Kid A I would have to convince myself for a few days that I liked each new album. I think Hail to the Thief and In Rainbows are incredible. This new one is worth hearing, too, but a notch below their best work.

I can definitely appreciate their later stuff. Even a disappointing Radiohead album is going to be great in the larger picture. The creativity will always be there...it's just not always synced up with where I'm hoping they'll take it.

Re: OT: New Music?
Got my mitts on this record this week and listened to it today. It might be the most accessible Radiohead album I've heard since "Pablo Honey," and it's interesting enough to keep. But it's not causing me to hoard every album in the band's catalog, either.ScoopBrady wrote:Well, Radiohead has released a new album and I wanted to come in here and say how I just don't get their popularity. Re: OT: New Music?
A couple of new releases I like:
Yuck (Self-titled): Now that we've exhausted 80s retro, perhaps its time for 90s retro. This could have easily been on college radio circa 1992, and that's okay by me. Fat, fuzzed out guitar rockers mixed with some quieter songs, with a big nod toward Dinosaur Jr. although minus the crazy J Mascis solos. I like it. It's got a big sound and the songs flow well, with enough diversity to keep it from getting repetitive. Even the album cover screams flyer posted at the college coop.
Smith Westerns, Dye It Blonde. Between this and Tame Impala, I'd say phony Beatlemania has risen from the dust. Unlike TI, who's Lennon-ish sound kind of unnerved me, this is a very pleasant, very well-constructed album, even more impressive given that these guys are barely out of high school apparently. Catchy guitar pop that has an extra bit of Rubber Soul bounce to it. What I especially like is that there's a lot of care put into the production. There's a lot of extra flourishes that add a lot of depth to the songs, without going overboard and suffocating them.
With both, check out the first tracks. If you like those, you'll like the rest.

Paul, if you think "Limbs" is accessible, check out "In Rainbows". In terms of accessibility, "In Rainbows" sounds like the first Weezer album compared to this one, lol.pk500 wrote:Got my mitts on this record this week and listened to it today. Re: OT: New Music?
I got "In Rainbows" at the Thom Yorke discount price when it was released. It had about the same effect as this record -- a keeper, but nothing mind-blowing. I'll revisit it. Grabbed both of these records in the last two weeks.Brando70 wrote:A couple of new releases I like:

You're right about the Smith Westerns' record -- very cool production with attention to detail rare from any band, let alone one comprised of youngsters. But the band's youth and lack of experience was borne out because I thought a lot of the record sounded "samey."
I DUG the Yuck album for the reasons you described so well. Maybe I was on a nostalgia trip the nights I listened to it, but that record did put me into the time tunnel to the late 80s and early 90s. Very cool.
