Re: Skyrim
Gotta admit after giving it some more time tonight I can definitely see the attraction to this game. I'm only a level 4 but the few hours I have put into it while concentrating on the game has been enjoyable. Guess k wont send it back to gamefly quite so soon.
Re: Skyrim
it is all fun and games until you don't save for awhile, hike around, kill things, then fall off a damn cliff.

After reading about some guys doing that...I am ultra conservative...save after damn near everything. Paranoid for sure.Sudz wrote:it is all fun and games until you don't save for awhile, hike around, kill things, then fall off a damn cliff.

Me too
Re: Skyrim
I really need a non sports game and this looks great. Never play RPG and i don't like FPS, but this story looks like it's out of GAme of Thrones.
Is the game only FPS or can you change the camera to another view? Any deals out there for this?

Wow that is awesome. I just read this post and this is basically me, I think I'll enjoy this one -

Wow. Just wow. Immersive is a great way to describe the game. From what I am reading in this thread, I must be barely scratching the surface of what an RPGamer does in these games, but it's still great fun. I'm trying to stick to the main missions since I'm getting sucked into the story line. Just finished the embassy mission, and I'm at Level 7. I'm putting all my level-ups into Magic, trying to avoid using any weapons at all - not easy - but I'm determined to be a bad-ass mage. Nevertheless, I've learned that running from an enemy is a perfectly acceptable strategy when just trying to get from point A to point B.
I'm really hoping that I will find a recipe book at some point so I can learn how to mix ingredients to make something new. Seems like a mage should know how to do that.
Re: Skyrim
Lancer, I'm still enjoying the game a LOT. I say go for it. But yeah, save often!!

I like the way that you can save at any point and the next time you play you are put pretty much right back at where you saved. No checkpoints or anything like that to be placed at. I also appreciate the clear objectives in the menus so that I am not lost if I come back to play after saving and forgot what I was doing. These two things make it a great game for short play sessions if need be. Of course, time permitting, it's best played for hours at a time. Skyrim and Uncharted 3 are competing for game of the year in my book.

It's funny how games like this can have saves that do just what you say.. but most sports games don't even have in game saves.toonarmy wrote:I like the way that you can save at any point and the next time you play you are put pretty much right back at where you saved. Really enjoying my time with Skyrim...
What I like most is the feeling that every journey I make in the game is "my journey" - there's just so much variation depending on your specific route, character, play style, etc... All of us playing could probably share our stories about going to the same place, yet every single one would be different and worth hearing.

Wasted much of last night smithing and didnt even level it that much. Too much to do and too much to see.

No kidding. I fell down one of those rabbit-hole dungeons. Investigated a house that looked innocent and ended up killing baddies in ice caves for 2 hours. LOLXXXIV wrote:Wasted much of last night smithing and didnt even level it that much. Too much to do and too much to see.

Sticking with a theme in this thread, this is ultra-nerdy. But hey, you're reading the Skyrim thread, so I wouldn't go throwing polyhedral dice in glass houses.

Re: Skyrim
So is it just the way I built up my guy or is anyone else noticing a serious increase in difficulty after level 20? It's gotten at points where it is reminding me of the leveling monster of Oblvion and that was not for me.
Last night I got a quest to go do something and I was in tunnels fighting skeevers. Now I was decimating skeevers at level 1 but last night I found myself dying several times while fighting off one or two of them. Also the spell casters I've encounter lately can sure take a beating when they used to go down like butter.
As I said I kind of have a mish mash guy who is heavy in one handed and then destruction magic. So he is not an expert at either. up until now that has worked but now I'm not having such an easy go of it with more common monsters.

Re: Skyrim
I always respect Bissel's opinion, but I don't have the same reaction to the NPC's and voice acting that he does. I think it's more than adequate. OTOH, he and I are approaching from different points of view in that I found Oblivion to be tedious and flawed in the story department but thought Morrowind was brilliantly executed (easily the best in the series until now).dbdynsty25 wrote:Pretty good writeup by Bissel on Grantland (of course):

It might just be because I'm older than he and have played everything back to Arena, whereas as a youngster he may expect things like L.A. Noire to be the new standard in this regard. In any event, his critique is certainly valid but not one with which I agree.

Re: Skyrim
Some additional random impressions. I may be stating the obvious here, because I didn't read any reviews.
1. The dungeons are freaking awesome! I've been in 18 dungeons so far and I have to say that they almost all have unique attributes that make them stand out in my mind. Sure there are only so many ways to have crypts laid out, but the architecture of the dungeons, not to mention vegetation, lighting, sound etc. really make each one feel different.
2. The combat is definitely more fun. It's not that the mechanics are much improved since Oblivion, but rather a case where looks really contribute to the feel of the game. Between the scripted killshots, the awesome way that spells impact the environment, and even the screwy physics, combat just feels epic in a way no previous ES game has.
3. I just completed the College of Winterhold quest series. No spoilers, but if this is representative of some of the longer and more involved quests, this game totally exceeds my expectations. While individual quests are the standard search for bauble, kill baddie, take bauble trope, the way they contextualize the overall goal is really well done. To reiterate, I think Bissel is off his rocker. The voice acting was just fine and there was a nice blend of humor and pathos in the writing which made me want to finish the damn quest for reasons other than lining my own pockets with loot.
4. I wish there were a traditional paper doll screen so that you can see what you've got equipped and where. There are times when it can be hard to keep track on the list, especially if you're switching between two "builds" as I do. I'm playing as a spellsword, and I have two sets of gear, one for hand-to-hand and another for boss battle where I'm going to need extra magi-ness. I'm sure that there are PC mods that would be useful, but something in-game would be nice.
