Down the road at the local track was a 1992 Toyota Celica. A little worn, but still sleek and racy. All this car wanted to do was race - tracks, roads, dirt, etc. It's aim was to please, and despite the lack of horsepower and styling compared to the Ferrari, was confident in its abilities. The man admired that car from afar until one day he was presented with the opportunity to test it out. Tiger Woods hurt in car accident

Although I agree with Parnevik's statement, if they ever pair together next year, Tiger will have him for lunch. Again, despite this soap opera, I don't think his game will be affected if at all, he's the best at what he does and the golf fans will cheer and roar for him even more.Feanor wrote:Jesper Parnevik has apologized to Tiger's wife and given Tiger a shove to make sure he stays under the bus. If these guys have to play together any time soon it's going to be very awkward.
http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/golf/31247 ... Woods-wifeI really feel sorry for Elin since me and my wife were at fault for hooking her up with him.
We probably thought he was a better guy than he is then...
But when you are the guy he is, the world's best athlete, you should think more before you do stuff and maybe not 'Just do it,' like Nike says.
My take: I don't care if Tiger cheated on his wife. Honestly I don't care that he lied to the public about it. That is between him and his wife and honestly I don't think he is a bad guy cheating, just a bad husband. Plus we don't know anything about Elin. Maybe behind closed doors she is a total psycho. Maybe she barely touches the guy since they got married. Who cares anyway. None of your business, none of my business, it's family business. All this news is a really sad commentary on the current state of sports journalism and it's over the top invasiveness today.
He's entitled to try to guard his privacy but he can't be surprised that people are interested in these tabloid details. He's not the first celebrity who's had his personal life on display.
He chose a career which would put him in the brightest spotlight. Not just on the course but all the commercial endorsements are based on a certain clean image that probably PR consultants trained him to cultivate.
He has no economic motive to continue this career, other than to become the first billion dollar athlete or reach some other big milestones.
Don't step into the spotlight if you're not ready for people to really look at you.
The attention he's getting now is what made advertisers give him big money to be their pitchman.
Two sides of a coin.
Edit: I bet the fallout of this will be higher ratings, at least for the first tournament he plays after this scandal.
No such thing as bad publicity.
And most sponsors probably won't drop him. Hell Nike took Kobe back after the rape allegations.

He gets money and sponsors because he is the best golfer on planet Earth. That doesn't give anybody the right to invade his private life like this. Honestly that is such a tired excuse for being a nosy fan. It is a family issue, possibly a legal issue, but it is not a public issue.wco81 wrote:He's entitled to try to guard his privacy but he can't be surprised that people are interested in these tabloid details. Yeah, that's my question: Was she Parnevik's nanny first and became a model after she met Tiger or vice-versa?wco81 wrote:Wasn't she some innocent au pair when Tiger discovered her? If it's the latter, that's weird. How the f*ck do you go from being a swimsuit model to a nanny?

If you cheat on your wife -- and do it so stupidly -- then you deserve whatever you get. I don't care if his wife was a frigid as a fjord in February -- if the marriage was that bad, then divorce her before you start splitting the fairways of media-hungry waitresses. It doesn't make him a bad person, but it removes any sympathy I have for him.
As for the media invading his life: If Tiger was just a pro golfer, that would be a different story. But he takes the endorsements and has positioned himself as a public personality. If you try to manipulate the media for your advantage, don't be surprised when it tries to manipulate you for its advantage. The public has ALWAYS been interested in these kinds of stories. We just have more ways to access those stories these days.
I'm only sorry that we don't have Dave Chappelle around to make fun of all this.

E.T. ‘Big Woody’ Woods had been the hottest driver on the circuit for years, now. He had won titles, fortune and fame, but for Big Woody it was always just about the next race, and he’d take on all challengers.
Sure, a few years ago he had spent a lot of his time chasing down a sweet Koenigsegg that one of his fellow drivers pointed out to him. It took a little while, but eventually they were lining up to race for keeps. After he won and took the pink, however, the interest just wasn’t there. That ride was old news, now, and ‘Big Woody’ was always looking forward to his next victory. Besides, he had since added a couple of new drivers to the Woods team, and in their training days they ended up kicking around inside the old Swede enough to do some body damage and even mess with her handling. She was far too loose a ride for Big Woody now.
So he spent his nights cruising, and racing. Yeah, sometimes he was sought out for who he was, with aggressive wannabes flashing their headlights at him to signal their willingness for a go. Other times he saw some nice bodywork and sought out the challenge himself, just looking to lay down the rubber. Most of the time, though, there was always someone with him at any given intersection, and when ‘Big Woody’ saw the light turn green, all he knew how to do was go, go, go.
I have no problem saying that it does make him a bad person, at least in that area. We all are bad people in one way or another. Two weeks before your first child is born? Come on, that is just bad.Brando70 wrote:If you cheat on your wife -- and do it so stupidly -- then you deserve whatever you get. That's what disappoints me the most. The US Open being on Father's Day was always (supposedly) such a big deal to Tiger. Because of his relationship with his father, the first US Open after his father died was emotional for him, then the first US Open that he was a father himself, again, another big emotional moment that kinda left you pulling for him.DChaps wrote:I have no problem saying that it does make him a bad person, at least in that area. Sure, alot of that was hyped up by the media, but he went along with it saying how important the whole Father's Day stuff was and what being a father meant to him. Turns out that was all a crock.

Not a chance. The guy promotes elite products: Tag Heuer, Cadillac, Nike, Accenture, NetJet, etc. Every company that sponsors him markets themselves as the "best" or "the elite", hell even Gillette uses the word "Champion" in their ads. He has never represented an image of a wholesome family man or everyday American. He represents the 8% of Americans who can afford to be like him.Maybe the marriage was part of the image which made him so appealing to advertisers and viewers?
This doesn't excuse his behavior one bit, but the guy has never come across as the "everyman" in anything he's done.

Yeah, but I'm the one who keeps on insisting that it's STILL nobody's business. If he bet on golf, then yeah. But he put his tool in someone else's shed...has nothing to do with why he has a public persona in the first place.RallyMonkey wrote:And yet, much like women to Oprah, you can't get enough and keep coming back! This thread looks like a bunch of women discussing the latest Oprah show...
It isn't that I can't get enough, it's that I've HAD enough-somebody's gotta be voice of reason in this tabloid soap opera...

But it has EVERYTHING to do with what made his public persona appealing to sponsors. There's much more to the Tiger brand than success on the golf course.Teal wrote:Yeah, but I'm the one who keeps on insisting that it's STILL nobody's business. If he bet on golf, then yeah. Before last Thursday night, the guy was seen as a machine of perfection. Perfect golf game. Perfect diction (other than cursing after errant shots). Perfect appeal to all multiple races, age groups and both genders. Perfect home life, with beautiful wife, two children.
Companies flocked to Tiger because he was perceived as NOT being "one of us." He was immortal, super-human. That WAS the Tiger Woods brand.
And now that brand image has been sullied. And it makes him a lot less appealing as a marketable brand. Now his appeal is just golf. And I'm not sure if companies will consider that worth $80 million per year, his estimated income from endorsements.
One of my favorite sports writers, Richard Williams, wrote an excellent column about this:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/20 ... ds-apology
Teal, you're not a voice of reason in this thread. You're a vision of blurred optics.
This isn't 1930, where reporters kept Babe Ruth's peccadillos under wraps because they wanted to stay friendly with him and not dent his clay feet. This isn't 1962, where reporters didn't divulge Jack Kennedy's blowjobs from starlets in the back of limos because they didn't want to embarrass the most powerful man in the world.
This is 2009, where citizens have more media power than once-mighty media barons and their companies. It's a constant news cycle, just as it was five years ago. But unlike five years ago, regular folk are driving that news cycle much more than the mass media through Twitter, Facebook, blogs and the Web.
These issues become stories because that's what the public is talking about. That's what the public wants to know more about. People probably whispered about people's foibles in the 30s and 60s, but those whispers didn't have fiber-optic worldwide legs to carry them to all corners of the globe.
The water cooler now is as big as the planet.
Mayberry is burned to the ground; Ward Cleaver was buried in his perfect, pressed gray suit at least a decade ago.
Take care,
PK

This could be an interesting debate. I know at first it seems that what Vick did was much worse, but is Tiger that far behind? Is cheating on your wife for years and years....deceiving her and lying to her face day after day better or worse than running a dogfighting operation and killing and torturing dogs?
I am curious what you guys think about this. Also, please don't b*tch about not putting this in the Tiger thread! I thought it would get burried or ignored by those who are already tired of the Tiger talk.
I had this discussion with a co-worker who thinks its very unfair that Nike is sticking by Tiger after what he did as opposed to dropping Vick's endorsements when that happened. Is Nike contradictory in not dropping Woods also?

"Well, for one thing, wasn't Vick dropped from Nike AFTER he was proven guilty in a court of law?
Tiger is guilty in the court of public opinion, but not a court of law. So, Nike may have to be careful.
Until the whole story is out, I think it's impossible to fully judge Tiger. And as there probably won't be any type of court case, i doubt we will get all of the details, so you are then comparing apples to oranges.
IF we are to pretend all of the Tiger stuff is fact, I say what Vick did was worse. In my books, murder will always rank above adultery."
