Joe Calzaghe officially retires:
http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing ... id=3886721
Dude is Hall of Famer because he's unbeaten, but he only has about 1 1/2 significant wins on his 46-0-0 record -- the victory over Bernard Hopkins (1) and the victory over Mikkel Kessler (1/2). Please don't offer Jeff Lacy or Chris Eubank as big-time wins. And PLEASE don't offer an over-the-hill Roy Jones Jr.
Calzaghe could have sealed his legacy by taking on Dawson and beating him, but Joe wants money and a pretty face more than legendary status, apparently.
Take care,
PK

A toothless sanction, unfortunately. Various boxing blogs that I read daily reported this morning that Bob Arum already is arranging a fight for Tony in Mexico.grtwhtsk wrote:Wow...Margarito can't fight in the US! http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing ... id=3897765
This should have been a two-year worldwide ban, at least. Fighting with loaded gloves could kill an opponent.

Very good card tonight on ESPN2's "Friday Night Fights," which already has had a kick-ass season after six weeks!
Two highly touted Cuban prospects, lightweight Breidis Prescott (20-0-0) and featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa (13-0-0) fight in separate bouts on the undercard.
Gamboa is one of the most exciting prospects in boxing today. Unreal power for a lightweight but very suspect defense means he can drop his foe or be dropped at any time. Watch this kid!
The main event also should be a good one: Junior middleweight prospects Richard Gutierrez (24-2-1) vs. Jesus Gonzalez (24-1-0).
This fine card kicks off a great weekend of boxing, as Miguel Angel Cotto and Kelly Pavlik fight in separate bouts Saturday night, each coming off their respective first career losses. Cotto should pound Jennings, but Rubio could give Pavlik a stern challenge.
Take care,
PK

That was an EPIC fight. Not quite up there with Castillo-Corrales I, but as Max Kellerman said, approaching that level.grtwhtsk wrote:Wow...what a fight tonight with J. M. Marquez vs. J. Diaz. Now that was fun!!
I also thought Max and Lamps were spot-on when they said it was a boxing clinic. Both guys are so skilled and so brave, and both were throwing big shots all night.
I bet Marquez was maybe one point behind on most cards when he dropped Diaz, so it was an unbelievably clutch performance. I guess there's one sure way to stop Diaz -- cut him. He was cut badly in his only two losses, to Nate Campbell and last night to Marquez.
Marquez last night used the successful formula of all great fighters who have a foe in trouble: Go to the body to set up the finish to the head. I see so many young or inexperienced fighters every week on "Friday Night Fights" try to finish hurt opponents solely with head shots. Dropping to the body first is so much more effective.
I would love to see Marquez step up to 140 and fight the winner of Pacquiao-Hatton. That would be a great fight, especially if it's Pacquiao-Marquez III.
Take care,
PK

Especially since Marquez beat Manny in the second fight, regardless of what the judges said.grtwhtsk wrote:I would love to see that as well. Live heavyweight title fight returns to basic cable tonight -- Vitali Klitschko vs. Juan Carlos Gomez.
6 p.m.: ESPN Classic (live)
7 p.m.: ESPN2 (delayed)
At least it's Vitali, the more exciting of the Shitschko brothers. But exciting is relative when talking about these two clowns.
Gomez isn't a bad fighter. Hope he can pull off the upset.
Take care,

Oh, yeah. I've been pumped for this fight since the day it was announced. Having a fight party here Saturday night with some buddies and my 8-year-old son. Come on over, Sharkie!
I think Manny should win. But it's no guarantee. Ricky has looked like a much better boxing under Floyd Mayweather Sr., as he was quicker and more elusive against the slick Paulie Malignaggi in a tune-up fight.
Ricky also fights best at 140, as his natural strength is more of an advantage there than at 147.
I also wonder about the change in Manny's training, with Michael Moorer joining Freddie Roach. Another voice could help, but it also could hurt since Manny has worked only with Roach for the last eight years. Plus the Wild Card Gym has looked like a mob scene in "24/7" episodes, and I wonder how that has affected Manny's focus.
Still, Manny has been murdering sparring partners in all three episodes of "24/7," while last week's episode was the first that featured footage of Ricky sparring. Ricky sure seems to be spending a lot of time on the mitts with Floyd Sr.
Can't wait for another great weekend of boxing. This already has been a bumper year, and it's only April. Last weekend was no exception, with Carl Froch's STUNNING 12th-round KO of Jermain Taylor, the incredibly overrated John Duddy getting exposed by a glorified club fighter and the hottest new star in the lighter weights, Juan Manuel Lopez, dismantling Gerry Penalosa with tremendous amounts of punishment before Freddie Roach mercifully threw in the towel for Penalosa.
Viva boxing!
Take care,
PK

I'm the Original King of Queens! I lived most of my life in Bayside, NY (Family still lives there). I went to college up at SUNY Albany. Been up to Buffalo and Rochester a number of times as well. Heck, had an old college friend that lived in Clyde and I visited that little village! Ever hear of Clyde PK?pk500 wrote:You're a native of the Empire State?
