Yeah but most of us gadget guys don't keep our stuff long enough before upgrading anyway so we probably dont have to worry about a battery replacement.dbdynsty25 wrote:$85.95 to replace the battery...and a week or more without your cell phone? Wow.

Yeah, tell that to everyone who bought a 360. Can we get PK to change the title of this thread to "iPhone" or something? I do have sexual feelings toward my iphone, but this tech orgasm has lasted months and it's a bit embarrassing to be sportin' wood in front of all if you.

At least the "coffin" should be smaller than the 360's.....
Apple will offer you a 3-year AppleCare warranty for some exhorbitant sum.
REviews on build quality seem to indicate it's good and people have reported good battery life.
But lets face it, they will encourage you after a year or two to upgrade to a new model.
With iPods, they take in old models and recycle it for you and give you 10% discount towards new purchases. Of course, a 2-year old iPhone may or many not fetch more than a 10% discount on eBay.

I have a phone that's worth less than $0 that I got when I signed up for Cingular. I don't know why people need to pay $500+ for a cell phone that will be obsolete in 1 year. It is worse than buying a top of the line video card.
I just need my phone to make calls, if it does that, I am happy.

Below was my reply to Diablo, just thought I'd share.
I know everyone expects me to love it, which I do, so don't bother reading if your predisposed to thinking I'm full of crap...
---------
You know I'm an Apple guy, but in all candor you CAN'T go wrong with this device.
It's easily the best iPod ever. The video quality is stunning, and while the capacity (8GB) is a lot less than the iPod video, it's enough to hold plenty of content as long as you manage it regularly. The screen is 160 ppi, and everyone is blown away by how sharp, bright, and resilient it is. I've been using mine for almost a week and there's not a scratch on it - it's almost impossible to scratch the screen short of using a diamond.
Text messaging is GREAT, especially since it keeps your messages in threads, so you can look at an entire conversation with one finger flick.
As for the concerns, I've heard the following criticisms, which I'll reply to in turn:
- TYPING - I'm already faster than my Blackberry, but I do make more mistakes. You just have to 'trust' the predictive text and you'll be blazing along. Not having copy/paste is lame, but that will no doubt be fixed in future software (think of the iPhone as a PC, it will evolve through software over time, unlike a conventional phone).
- BATTERY - A charge lasts long enough for a full day of music, phone calls, and web browsing. I recharge overnight so it's perfect for me. I've been doing constant demos over the first few days and haven't run out of juice yet (recharging overnight). Yes, it's non-replaceable without sending in to Apple. However, have you ever bought a REPLACEMENT (not an extra) for your Cell Phone battery? Or your laptop? The odds are you'll be on to the NEXT iPhone before the battery loses its recharge ability. If not, it's only $85 to Apple to have it replaced - not much more expensive than buying a new battery (and you can bet that 3rd party services will pop up to do it for $40-$50). This is such a non-issue it's not even funny. Having the battery inside makes the device more solid and durable. The iPhone will also have a thriving accessory market, including external battery packs, so you can be sure that you'll never be without a charge for long.
- EDGE - It's FINE. I don't know what people expect, but being able to access the REAL web from anywhere at better than dial-up speeds is revolutionary. Yes, it would be nice if it were 3G, but that would eat battery and be available only in major metro areas. With EDGE, I can surf from obscure locations. PLENTY fast for Text messaging, emails, and standard web browsing. The only thing I avoid when on Edge is YouTube, but even those load pretty quickly. Sometimes it's faster than others, but entirely tolerable from my perspective.
- PRICE - People don't mind paying $399 for an iPod, and this (despite lower capacity) is a MUCH better iPod. People also pay $99-$299 for a decent Blackberry/PDA. People pay $1200 for a laptop. This merges those 3 devices (it IS a laptop replacement in some ways - I use it a ton instead of my laptop when browsing the web at home). $599 is a fair price for a revolutionary device.
- OTHER - There are other nit-picks I've seen about some minor UI quibbles, that's what the HOME button is for. This PLATFORM will develop over time, and it's already LIGHT YEARS beyond anything else.
No BS, those are my thoughts. I LOVE my Macs, I love OSX and iLife. I Love my Apple TV. I love my iPod(s). This, however, is the single most impressive piece of technology I've ever laid my hands upon, and it's already changed my work and personal life with its functionality. I can't recommend it highly enough; it's not just a phone or a cool PDA, it will make you rethink what you expect of technology in general...

Some of the stuff that people are nitpicking about truly amazes me. The funny thing is that most every nitpick issue can and will probably be addressed in a future software update.
I love the reviews that say "yes, the iPhone is truly amazing and revolutionary but it can't do this and that...". People are actually bothered that it can't do voice dialing or doesn't have a flash on it's camera!?!? Yeah...like the phone cameras with flashes are really awesome...
Does anyone compare what the iPhone CAN do against all the expensive smartphones that do have flashes on the cameras? I'll take the iPhones features over the $300-500 smartphones that do have voice dilaing and a built in camera flash any day.

But isn't that what everyone always says about flaws with particular devices/software/etc.? Rarely do you see all complaints addressed and I doubt that the Iphone will be one of those devices. It is just a case of a device doing TOO much. Trust me, if it were on Verizon, I'd probably get one, so it's not like I hate the device...but you guys claiming that every quibble will be address as soon as a software update is released are expecting way too much. If you want to use that to defend issues with the phone, and that makes you feel better about your 500+ dollar purchase, then that's all good. Complex devices have issues...and those issues persist usually. I'd be more inclined to think that they'd address most of the issues when the 2G version of the phone comes out...that way they can get people to upgrade.Spooky wrote:Some of the stuff that people are nitpicking about truly amazes me. And I'm not singling you out Spooky...every person that I know that owns one says the same thing, so it's a broad statement to the iPhone population.
Thanks for your initial impressions Sport73. The reason I didn't give you a price bid when you had it for sale here is because I wasn't sure it the phone would work within Canada. And since I heard it was a locked phone I decided to wait until the iphone is available here in a couple of months.
I mean I am sure I could have made the web, video, music and photo work but using the phone alone is important in my business. It's GSM so I think only Rogers will carry the iphone in Canada. By then hopefully all the initial bugs will be solved.

I don't really have a point. I am sure iPhone is great and all, but I will never understand why there is such a frenzy over it. I can see a small percentage of people who loves such a thing (and there is nothing wrong with that, there are stuff I will camp out for that no one else will). That's all.Spooky wrote:That's great and all, but what was the point of your post?
